Bat Boy makes an Impression

LAST WEEKEND FOR BAT BOY

How does the town of Hope Falls, West Virginia respond to finding a strange creature that is part human and part bat? The local ranchers say dozens of cows have been killed and the choice of punishment is obvious. But the intervention of one family, which happens to include the town's alcoholic veterinarian, might find a way to get Bat Boy out of the cage and into society - possibly even saved at the next tent revival meeting. Will this be a simple story of salvation or do the connections of trying to teach Bat Boy run deeper than anyone imagined? - Jim Drake

CGOA presents ‘Our American Home’ concerts

The Columbia Gorge Orchestra Association presents OUR AMERICAN HOME with The Gorge Sinfonietta for two shows at Wy’east Middle School Performing Arts Center (Friday, June 14, 7 p.m. and Sunday, June 16, 2 p.m.) and one show at The Dalles Civic Auditorium Ballroom (Saturday, June 15, 7 p.m.) Ticket information is at www.gorgeorchestra.org

About the Concert

Our American Home

After a season that included music from England and Italy, the Gorge Sinfonietta returns to the United States for “Our American Home.” The concerts include some of the most beloved and iconic symphonic music from the golden age of American music.

From the 1920s through the 1950s, composers such as George Gershwin, Aaron Copland and Samuel Barber created the “American sound” in classical music. Melodic, bursting with emotion and energy, the music was as wide open as a prairie and as urban as New York City. Unlike some of the more avant garde music of the time, the American sound was easy to understand and direct in its expression.

Probably the most famous piece on the program is George Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue for piano and orchestra. One of the most recognizable, iconic American compositions of all time, Rhapsody in Blue is celebrating its 100th anniversary in 2024. It brings together the sound of symphonic music with the infectious syncopated rhythms of jazz. The Sinfonietta will be joined for Rhapsody in Blue by pianist/composer Mitchell Jett Spencer. Spencer thrilled audiences last season with his standing room-only performance of the Rachmaninov 2nd Piano Concerto.

Of course, American music continues to change and develop. Audiences will get to participate in that evolution firsthand, as the Sinfonietta presents the world premiere of Spirit of the Wind and Water, by Portland area composer Nicole Buetti. In addition to being a composer, Buetti is a virtuoso bassoonist and plays with the Sinfonietta. Spirit of the Wind and Water was inspired by watching kite boarders on the Columbia. It’s fast, exciting and evocative.

Our American Home includes several other, very recognizable compositions, including Aaron Copland’s noble Fanfare for the Common Man and Samuel Barber’s Adagio for Strings, a heartbreaking piece most famously featured in the film, Platoon. Rounding out the concert is another Copland composition, the Suite from The Tender Land. In addition to being an orchestral showpiece, the suite recalls other Copland compositions such as Appalachian Spring.

Live Music at Trout Lake Hall

Trout Lake Hall in Trout Lake, Washington is bringing live music back to the Historic building’s stage. More information and tickets at: https://www.troutlakehall.com/

Friday, May 17, Chatham Rabbits / Beard & Banjo, North Carolinian roots couple with a unique touring history, $12 Advance // $15 Day Of Show, 6 p.m. Doors / 7 p.m. Show, All Ages

Chatham Rabbits

CHATHAM RABBITS

There is something warm and instantly familiar about the beloved roots duo, Chatham Rabbits. Partners in music and life, Chatham Rabbits’ Austin and Sarah McCombie blend their personal histories through deft songwriting and a history that comes from building a life together. Leaning into each other's strengths, their songs present a congenial, collaborative spirit that has captured the pure adoration of fans along the way and earned them praise from Garden & Gun Magazine, American Songwriter, and No Depression.

Saturday, May 18, Chatham County Line, Fresh interpretation of roots and bluegrass, $15 Advance // $15 Day Of Show, 6 p.m. Doors / 7 p.m. Show, All Ages

Chatham County Line

CHATHAM COUNTY LINE

Launched a little more than twenty years ago in Raleigh, North Carolina, Chatham County Line built a devoted local following on the strength of their genre-bending live show — an intoxicating blend of bluegrass, folk, country, and rock and roll — before breaking out internationally with their 2003 self-titled debut. In the years to come, the band would go on to release eight more critically acclaimed studio albums, top the Billboard Bluegrass Chart four times, collaborate with the likes of Judy Collins, Sharon Van Etten, and Norwegian star Jonas Fjeld, earn two gold records in Norway, and share bills with everyone from Guy Clark and Lyle Lovett to Steve Martin, Martin Short and The Avett Brothers. NPR hailed the group as “a bridge between bluegrass traditions and a fresh interpretation of those influences,” while Uncut lauded their “powerful melodies and gorgeous harmonies,” and Pitchfork dubbed their music “timeless.”

Sunday, May 19, Chris Pureka / Lo Pony, Intimate Americana master from Portland, $15 Advance // $20 Day Of Show, 6 p.m. Doors / 6:30 p.m. Show, All Ages

CHRIS PUREKA

It’s rare for an artist to bridge the divide between critical acclaim and dedicated fan engagement. Chris Pureka is a Portland-based singer-songwriter whose body of work has resonated deeply with these seemingly disparate milieus. Their music has straddled the folk, americana and indie rock genres over the course of their 20 year career, and over that time, their bold vulnerability in processing the intimacies of life in song has struck a chord with those listeners who crave authenticity and depth.

LO PONY

Lo Pony is a queer folk group based in Portland, Or. Their sound is composed of delicate harmonies discussing loss, nostalgia, and a slow appreciation for the beauty of everyday life. Lo Pony's music stems from years of steadfast friendship since meeting in college in 2008.

Friday, May 24, Willy Tea Taylor & the Fellership, One of the Hall's favorites is back with his all-star band, $20 Advance // $25 Day Of Show, 6 p.m. Doors / 7 p.m. Show, 21+

WILLY TEA TAYLOR

There is no question that Willy Tea Taylor’s life as a singer/songwriter was predetermined - his role realized the moment he wrote his first song. In it for the song, the hang, and the sounds he draws from his little, tenor guitar, Willy drew his inspiration from grainy videos he watched of true visionaries of his genre: Steve Earle, Rodney Crowell, Steve Young and Guy Clark, sitting around Clark’s little kitchen table loaded down with ash trays full of butts and half-smoked cigarettes, food, and booze on one Christmas Eve in 1975. Those guys, swapping songs without pretense, was what lit Willy Tea’s fire. Ever since, that’s been his passion - finding that hang and curating relationships through musical friendships that get him to his version of that night.

Sunday, May 26, Contra Dance with Sue Baker and the Beard and Banjo Revue, Free Event, Doors 4:30 p.m., Dance 5-7 p.m., All Ages

You don't need to have any experience with contra dancing, square dancing, or any Americana folk dancing to join in the fun! Sue Baker will be guiding you with clear, concise teaching.
