Obituary : Dorothy Laverne Herman, 80, White Salmon, WA

Dorothy Laverne Herman, of White Salmon, WA., passed away July 22nd, 2023, at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Portland, Oregon after a year-long battle with cancer. She maintained a positive attitude all throughout, never giving up hope of recovering. Her sister Ruby Pantalone was by her side with her son and close family nearby.

Dorothy was born in a simple farmhouse outside of Soper, Oklahoma to Wiley and Beulah (Ray) Herman on March 23, 1943. She joined sisters Roberta and Ruby. Brother James and sister Brenda would follow.

While Dorothy was still little, her family moved several times to states that included New Mexico, Texas, and back to Oklahoma before moving to Mosier, Oregon by the time she was five. Dorothy attended all twelve grades in Mosier, graduating from Mosier Highschool in 1961. In high school she played volleyball all four years, and her serve was powerful! You did not want to be on the receiving end of one of her spikes!  She was a member of the Girls' Athletic Association, pep club, school newspaper staff, annual staff, and participated in several school plays. Dorothy, along with her brother and sisters, delivered the Oregonian and Oregon Journal in Mosier for several years and they picked cherries every summer—all to help pay for school clothes.

Dorothy moved to Portland after graduating high school going to work for Meier & Frank Department Store while attending to Portland State University and later attending PCC. In ’62 She landed a job at Pacific Northwest Bell, and once hired she worked at the Telephone Company for 28 years as an instructor in Sales Support. It was a job that she thoroughly enjoyed.

After retiring from the Telephone Company in 1990, she moved to White Salmon, Washington where she worked to become a real estate broker, licensed in both Oregon and Washington. This was a second career well suited for her extrovertive tendencies and innate ability to network. After retiring from real estate, she enjoyed researching her family history as well organizing special get-togethers for family, friends, and retirees from US West Direct (Pacific Northwest Bell). She loved this work immensely. She took the most joy in spending time with friends and family. A most memorable event was her trip to Europe taken in 2000 with her friend Lynn Heyer—It remained a highlight of her travels and her life.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Wiley and Beulah Herman, and sister Brenda Herman. She is survived by her son Kevin Herman of White Salmon; two sisters Ruby Pantalone of Keizer, Oregon, and Roberta Reisner of Woodburn, Oregon; brother James “Jim” Herman of White Salmon, WA., and her Aunt Willia Mae Orta of Azel, Texas. She is also survived by two nieces, seven nephews, and many cousins throughout Texas, Oklahoma, Oregon and Washington, as well as a host of friends far and wide.

Services are planned for Saturday, August 26th at 11:00 AM at Anderson’s Tribute Center in Hood River, Oregon with reception to follow. Please feel free to bring your favorite food item.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a contribution to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital.

Obituary: Rosalind Cornelia Pool, 90, Hood River

Obituary: Rosalind Cornelia Pool, 90, Hood River

Rosalind Cornelia Pool

Rosalind Cornelia Pool, 90, was born as a surprise just after her twin sister Raynette Corrine Pool on October 8, 1932 at her home in Ontario, Oregon to Verna Taylor Pool and Charles Riley Pool.

With her two grandmothers in attendance, the girls and mother survived the delivery. Rosalind’s early years were in Ontario, her mother working at the 5 and Dime and father a carpenter and grandmothers watching them as needed. When WW2 came along, they moved west as Charlie worked as a carpenter on ships. She attended several grade schools in the Portland area and graduated from Grant High in 1950.

In the fall Rosalind and Raynette were off to Northwest Nazarene College in Nampa, Idaho. She soon met the “big man on campus” David James Burkhart from College Place, Washington and they married on May 6, 1951, in Portland.

After honeymooning at Cannon Beach, the couple finished the school year and then moved to the Pomona Ranch, Dave’s mother’s family apple orchard near Dayton, Washington for the summer. That fall they moved to Pullman, Washington for Dave to take horticulture classes to become manager at the orchards. They welcomed their first child, Deborah Ray, in April and soon were back on the ranch. Stephen David and Becky Sue were then born in Dayton. She worked at the local newspaper doing the teletype machine, played piano and sang at the Nazarene church and the family lived there until January 1961 when Dave took an OSU Extension job in Milton-Freewater.

Now going by “Roz”, she worked as a school secretary, bank teller, licenser at a car dealership as well as teaching Sunday School at the Christian Church, playing the piano, painting, drawing, playing bridge and learning to play the organ. Roz always wanted to move back to the green of western Oregon. They did just that in fall of 1970 to Corvallis for 9 months while Dave got his Master’s Degree. She worked for the manager of the OSU Bookstore and loved reconnecting with all her valley family and friends.

Then back to Milton-Freewater for two years and then in 1973 Dave became the OSU Extension Chairman agent for Hood River County. Roz played the organ for the Hood River Christian Church and for funerals. She worked for an attorney and the county as well as kept painting.

Roz loved doing jigsaw puzzles and her family spent a lot of time with her completing them. Dave retired and then passed away in 2008. Roz then needed medical care and she lived in Beaverton in assisted living until March 2022. She has resided at Hawks Ridge in Hood River until her passing on July 27, 2023. Roz still wore her bright clothing with jewelry and makeup every day and loved to go out to lunch. She loved celebrating her 90th birthday with her twin sister and families and saying “Well, I’m 90 now you know”. Special thanks to Chaplin Barbara Clark. A celebration will be held Friday, August 18 at 11.30 am. at Anderson Tribute Center Hood River, Oregon. A light lunch will follow. Roz will be interred with Dave at Hood River Cemetery remembrance wall.

Roz is survived by sister Rae Ludlow of Redmond, Oregon, children Deborah Johns (Bob), Athena, Stephen Burkhart, Hood River and Becky Young of Tigard. Grandchildren Maurice and Meghan Johns, Scott Burkhart (Makala) and Caitlin Burkhart Schubert (Mac) and Will Young (Emilie). Great grandchildren are Brandt, Merritt and Gemma Burkhart, Hunter and Winnie Schubert, Mia, Lia and Jackson Young, sisters-in-law and brother-in-law and many cousins, nieces and nephews that loved Aunt Roz.

Memorial Service & Reception are planned for 11:00 a.m., Friday, August 18th, 2023 at Anderson's Tribute Center • 1401 Belmont Avenue, Hood River, Oregon 97031. Mausoleum Committal will follow at Idlewild Cemetery of Hood River, Oregon.

Obituary: Leona Conger, 95, The Dalles

Obituary: Leona Conger, 95, The Dalles

In Loving Memory of a Life Well Lived

Leona Conger, age 95, passed away in The Dalles, Ore., at home with her family by her side, on July 31, 2023.

Born in the February winter of 1928 in Salol, Minn., Leona was the only child of Herbert and Cora Moore. Her parents farmed at the time of her birth in a time and place where they cut blocks of ice in the winter that were stored for cooling in the summer. Her parents owned a grocery store and she had fond memories of hanging out in the store growing up. She went to high school in Pelican Rapids and later graduated from Fergus Falls high school.

Leona enjoyed working at Yellowstone National Park as a waitress at two of the best restaurants in the park to put herself through college. During off hours, she spent time with friends and colleagues exploring the park, hiking and enjoying the great outdoors.

In 1953, she met Dean Conger, a photographer at the Denver Post. They dated for a few short months and then on a flight that he piloted, he asked her to marry him; she responded, “Let me think about it.” After a week, she gave him her answer: “Yes!”

They built a home together in Arvada, Colo., where Leona was a grade school teacher to special needs children with hearing and sight disabilities, and Dean was a photojournalist for the Post. In 1959 they moved to Bethesda, Md., for Dean’s new job and to raise their three young boys; it was her life as Chief Household Officer — mother and wife — that became her most rewarding venture. She enjoyed hobbies like reading, cooking, family time, skiing, travel, and staying alert to world news and current events. Among other advocacy groups, she was a proud member of the League of Women Voters.

Leona is survived by her husband of 70 years, Dean; sons, Eric (Kwan) of Phuket, Thailand; Kurt (Robyn) of The Dalles, and Chris of Taos, N.M.; grandchildren Joel (Carolina), James Robert and Christine Jennifer; and great-granddaughter Serena.

Anderson’s Tribute Center is in care of arrangements.
