Question of the week: Ever had a nickname? From the Editor - They used to call me bentnose through no fault of my own. Quite simply, I was dropped as a child, and my nose either broke or bent. The upshot, my schnoz, got a bridge like San Francisco. Tragic, funny, unique, and bittersweet at times, nicknames run wild through our lives, and I did not meet a person on the street this week without one.

The Oregon Reptile Man, Richard Richey delivered a fun and educational hour-long program featuring over a dozen different reptiles including an alligator, de-venomized diamondback rattlesnake, a king cobra and a burmese python named Julius Squeezer, at The Dalles Wasco County Library on August 9th, 2022.

Theresa Dwyer’s home at 909 Union Street was recently given the Beautification Award for August in The Dalles. The home provides a splendid pallet of color for passers-by, and I am sure the neighbors don’t mind the site through their windows, either.

Performing since he was 14 years old, Hogan’s life and musical journey has taken him from the rockabilly swinging 1960s of England to a communal lifestyle in southern Oregon in the 1970s. He’s a pioneer of Seattle’s underground music scene. Hogan says “he was there” when bands like Nirvana and Soundgarden became Grunge Gods and put Seattle on the map as a source of new music culture.

Here’s a chance to kick the weekend off right with some great music in the awesome outdoor venue at Bargeway Pub next to the Columbia River in The Dalles - 1535 Bargeway Road. Cal Scott, Bob Bailey and Dan Ross will perform songs from their new album, an all-original compilation with some funny lines and great storytelling. It’s titled Chapter One.

MoCo will locally source their music for the 5-year Anniversary on Saturday, Aug. 6. The Wasco Brothers are headlining the show. The fun begins at 4 p.m. But first, you might want to know something about the family-run operation. Meet Nate Stranz in this quick Q & A.

$100,000 will to the Ken Jernstedt Airfield in Hood River for the installation of weather reporting equipment.

"The Visiting Authors Program meets the cultural needs of our students, many of whom have never met a contemporary author, much less one of their culture or who speaks to their concerns," Wendy Patton explained. “This project selects diverse authors and integrates their work into existing courses. We will be inviting the wider Gorge community, recording and archiving the visits so people will benefit from this project well into the future.”

What was the first car you ever owned? Locals told us the good, the bad and the fugly. For example, Jonathan Alvarez didn’t always own a Dodge Challenger Hellcat. He started humbly with a Mazda 626 that he sold behind his Dad’s back to get a Honda Civic, a move his girlfriend and now wife appreciated.

"We cannot stress enough how grateful we are to all the volunteers who have come out for Clear the Cans events this year," said Steve Drynan, Executive Director of Home at Last Humane Society. Veterans who have served in the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Space Force, and Coast Guard can at times need assistance in accessing benefits they earned while working to further the interests of the United States of America. These two gentlemen are here to assist in those efforts.

The Broadway Junior version of the hit musical Godspell will begin rehearsals with a script read-through on Sunday, July 31, at 5:00 PM at The Dalles United Church of Christ Congregational, 111 East 5th Street. Performances are scheduled for Friday and Saturday evenings, Aug. 26 and 27, coinciding with the Northwest Mural Fest in The Dalles.

“It is a program that actually helps with building strong family bonds, that reduces youth risk of making unhealthy choices,” said Sunday Sutton, coordinator for the Coalition for Preventing Abuse in Klickitat County (CPAKC).

St. Vincent de Paul Society’s downtown location is undergoing a beautification process. Volunteer painters Lance Pardee and Galen Ballinger have painted the once gray building a sky colored blue and brightened up the entrance with a mural of a friendly and welcoming sun.

Leaving the Hook in Hood River, guests will launch on the Columbia River, paddling and exploring the landscape with guides from Hood River SUP and Kayak. Guides and educators will lead discussions on local birds and the cultural and ecological history of the area throughout the excursion. All kayaking gear and guides are included with the trip reservation.

District wildlife biologists will present proposed statewide and local changes to the 2023 hunting seasons, answer questions and ask for attendees’ feedback. A meeting is slated for Thursday, July 14 at 6 p.m. in The Dalles.
