David Eugene Staehnke

David Eugene Staehnke

July 28, 1942 – December 15, 2025

David Eugene Staehnke was born on July 28, 1942, to Walter and Edna Staehnke near Bemidji, Minnesota. He passed away on December 15, 2025, at a care facility in Hood River, following a battle with vascular dementia.

After moving with his family from Minnesota, David grew up and attended school in Havana, North Dakota, graduating from high school in 1960. Shortly after, he proudly served his country in the United States Air Force from 1960 to 1964, including service with the 57th Combat Support Squadron in Okinawa, Japan.

David and his first wife Joan moved to Oregon in 1964. They later divorced. He married Judy Sigman on January 9, 1971.

David dedicated nearly 40 years of his working life to Harvey Aluminum, later known as Martin Marietta and Northwest Aluminum. His strong work ethic and loyalty were hallmarks of his career.

Outside of work, David stayed busy and active. He enjoyed golfing, woodworking and home improvement projects, and had a creative side that showed through his stained-glass work. He took great pride in caring for his lawn—and often the lawns of others—always willing to lend his time and effort. In retirement, David and Judy enjoyed their winter trips to the southwest United States to visit family and attend NASCAR races. David was deeply committed to his health and fitness, working out at the club three days a week for more than 30 years, a testament to his discipline and determination.

He also gave generously of his time to his community. David was actively involved in youth baseball, coaching and maintaining ballfields, where he helped install the first batting cage and electric scoreboard at 16th Street Ballpark. He honored veterans by assisting the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars place graveside flags at local cemeteries on special holidays. He is also survived by extended family members and friends who will cherish his memory.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Edna Staehnke; his son, Rick; and his siblings, Betty Peterson, William Staehnke, Neil Staehnke, Enid Parrow, and Ferne Anderson.

A celebration of life honoring David will be held at Bargeway Pub in The Dalles on Saturday, March 21, 2026, from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. All are welcome to attend and celebrate his life. David will be interred at the Dufur Community Cemetery in a private ceremony at a later date.

Obituary: Sgt. Romeo Bernard Bonnette, 101, Bay Pines, Fla.

The former Dallesport resident, Sgt. Romeo B. Bonnette, was a highly decorated World War II veteran with two bronze stars for heroic service in combat zones. He earned a third bronze star for his service in the Korean War. He lived in Dallesport and attended and taught at Covenant Christian Church with his first wife Vivian.

Romeo Bernard Bonnette

By Susie Phillips

Romeo Bonnette, 101, passed away on Jan. 23, 2026 and will be laid to rest at Bay Pines National Memorial Cemetery in Bay Pines, Fl.

He was born to Kirby Bonnette and Neta Saucier of Plaucheville, La. on Oct. 25, 1924.

He is survived by his loving wife, Irene Tedder-Eighmey Bonnette and his daughter, Pamela Hamilton of Texas. Grandchildren, great-grandchildren, loving friends and Sherry Lawson, ((considered as a daughter).

Sgt. Romeo B. Bonnette of Co C 123rd Inf, served as a combat Infantryman in New Guinea Luzon and occupation duty in Japan at end of war, 1945-46. Honored with Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with two Bronze Stars for heroic and meritorious achievement – Philippine Liberation Ribbon with 1 Bronze Star, Good Conduct Medal – World War II Victory Medal. He also served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean Campaign.

Romeo spent an earlier chapter of his life living in Dallesport, Wash. in the Columbia River Gorge. He was a Fuller Brush representative for many years and also maintained a newspaper driving route, making deliveries for The Dalles Chronicle.

He and his ( then) wife Vivian ( Rinke, deceased) were well known for hosting Sunday dinner meals, welcoming church members, newcomers and strangers into their home. Together, they enjoyed delicious home-cooked meals that always included Vivian’s homemade biscuits.

They were active members of the local Covenant Christian church in The Dalles. Hosting Bible studies and singles groups, they were always available for advice, wisdom and encouragement. They often opened their doors for boarders in their home. Over the years, the Bonnette’s were an adopted grandpa and grandma to many of their dear friends and their children.

A few of Romeo’s favorite things were relaxing with a chicory coffee, promoting it to anyone and everyone willing to try a cup. He enjoyed being behind the wheel of his white Mercury Cougar, driving through the Gorge in his leisure time. Photography was a life-long love, and he could be found in his darkroom developing film, processing photos, and refining his skills. Trips to New Orleans to attend the family friendly Mardi Gras celebrations were always looked forward to.

Though he moved away many years ago to take up residence in Florida, he was exceptional in keeping up with friends via phone calls, letters and Christmas cards. As God’s good plans would have it, Romeo found love again and married his sweetheart Irene. They resided in Florida at the time of his passing. He was a soft-spoken man, an encourager by nature, and served the Lord in his long lifetime. There is great comfort in knowing that he is now in his Savior’s arms. He is fondly remembered and will be greatly missed.

Graduating from Nursing School in The Dalles General Hospital, 1946.  Mom continued to work at The Dalles General Hospital part time and full time after graduation through the mid-1970’s, making many lifelong friends with staff and patients alike.

Submitted by Jeff Hilderbrand

Wanda Hilderbrand, born in La Grande, Oregon on January 20, 1924 to Grant and Maude Tucker, passed away on January 26.  The youngest of four children, (Bert, Gayle, and Barbara) she grew up in Imbler. Wife to John Hilderbrand and Mother to Ormand (Christy), Jill Burlison (Barry, deceased), and Jeff (Jo). Grandmother to Wade Hilderbrand (Christie), Jesse Hilderbrand, Carla Hilderbrand (Sara), Katy Krueger (Jarrad), step-grandmother to Katie Dobbins (Denver), Crystal Rattler (Leo), and Great Grandmother to seven.  Mom also had a special relationship with her niece Marlene Wallace who was more of a sister than a niece.

Graduating from Nursing School in The Dalles General Hospital, 1946.  Mom continued to work at The Dalles General Hospital part time and full time after graduation through the mid-1970’s, making many lifelong friends with staff and patients alike.

Mom and Dad married in 1950 and they moved to the Hilderbrand family ranch east of Wasco where Dad and his brother Gordon farmed together.

Mom truly loved Sherman County and her “Wine Pals”, Trina Gray, Forrest Peters, Debbie Brown, and of course Marlene. (I hope I didn’t miss anyone!)

Growing up with Mom, our friends were always welcome at the home.  We could ask anyone we wanted to join us for dinner or even to go snow and water skiing; there was always room for one or two more.  We never had to ask if it was ok.

Mom, we loved your feisty nature. Your presence will be missed by your family and many others, but you’ll aways be in our hearts.

Memorial service will be on February 7 from 1:00-4:00 at the Wasco Event Center (the old grade school).

We would like to thank the staff at The Springs at Mill Creek in The Dalles, and Columba Basin Nursing for the care she was given in her final months.

Obituary: Aaron Richilano, 42, Hood River

Aaron Michael Richilano affectionately known as “Buzz” or “Snakes”. Aaron lived in Hood River most of his life and died at the age of 42 doing one of the things he was good at and loved, carpentry.

Aaron Michael Richilano affectionately known as “Buzz” or “Snakes”. Aaron lived in Hood River most of his life and died at the age of 42 doing one of the things he was good at and loved, carpentry.

Aaron loved people and people loved him. When he showed up somewhere he came with life and passion. His infectious laugh echoed throughout the room putting smiles on people’s faces because they couldn’t help it. Even though he was big, loud, and strong, he was soft, compassionate, and full of love on the inside. He was very protective of the ones he loved, especially his daughter Olivia, nieces, and nephew, Ayanna, Aven, Loanie, and Lyla.

Aaron was very good at what he did, no matter if he was on the job site, snowboarding, wave boarding, mountain biking, skateboarding or any other sport that gave him an adrenaline rush. He always went hard and did the very best he could with everything.

Aaron was also very passionate about music. He loved all kinds of music but his favorite was hip hop. He supported music by playing it loud and proud, sometimes if you were lucky you could see him dance, he had some good moves. Other ways he supported music was by going to shows no matter how big or small the act was. He also invested his money in artists, spending time in the studio or helping make videos.

Aaron worked Hard, Played Hard, and Loved Hard.

Aaron is survived by his Daughter (Olivia), Mom (Joan), Dad (Mark), Nieces (Ayanna, Loanie, Lyla), Nephew (Aven), (Their Mom, Idennis), Brothers (Shamus and Colin (Indira)), Aunts (Pat, Mariann, Kathy, and Carol), Uncles (John, Bob, John, Jerry, and David), Cousins (Laura, Michelle, Meredith, Chris, Britt, Kristina, Jamie, Chris, Ellen, Jon and Nic), Mother of Olivia (Victoria), and Significant other (Jayme)

Aaron was also loved by Mommom and Poppop, Grandma and Bapu, Uncle Don, and Uncle Cal.

Thank You for Loving Aaron because he loved you.

Please join us in celebration of his life: February 15, 2026, 3-6 p.m at the Hood River Senior Center, 2010 Sterling Place, Hood River.

Obituary: Richard Allen Miller, The Dalles

In 1974, Rich and Karen Miller moved to Oregon, where Rich was hired to start the first physical therapy department at what was then The Dalles General Hospital. He served as director of physical therapy for 10 years before partnering to form East Cascade Physical Therapy, a private practice specializing in orthopedics and sports medicine.

Richard Allen Miller of The Dalles, Oregon, passed away Feb. 3, 2026, after a courageous battle with ALS.

He was born Feb. 6, 1946, in Massena, Iowa, to Albert and Frances Miller. Rich grew up on a farm near Corning alongside his three brothers. The Miller boys spent their days playing baseball in the pasture by the creek, shooting hoops in the barn and helping with chores on the farm. Those early years taught lessons in teamwork and perseverance that shaped the rest of Rich’s life.

After attending grade school in a one-room schoolhouse, Rich went on to Corning High School, where he played football, wrestled and pitched for the baseball team. Following graduation, he attended the University of Nebraska–Lincoln on a combined baseball and wrestling scholarship. While there, he joined the Delta Tau Delta fraternity, was admitted to the College of Pharmacy and served as the college’s representative to the Associated Students of UNL. An unlucky ski accident and a fortunate introduction to rehabilitation changed his course, leading Rich to become one of 12 students admitted to the first physical therapy class at the University of Nebraska Medical Center.

Rich often said being part of that first class was the best thing that ever happened to him because one of those classmates was Karen Rieker, who became the love of his life and best friend. Rich and Karen graduated from physical therapy school in 1972 and married in 1973, beginning more than 52 years of partnership in both life and work that brought joy, care and inspiration to many.

In 1974, Rich and Karen moved to Oregon, where Rich was hired to start the first physical therapy department at what was then The Dalles General Hospital. He served as director of physical therapy for 10 years before partnering to form East Cascade Physical Therapy, a private practice specializing in orthopedics and sports medicine. He was an active member of the Oregon Physical Therapy Association and represented the state at the American Physical Therapy Association’s national conference. While Rich loved every aspect of his work, his favorite part was getting to know and caring for each of his patients.

Outside of work, sports remained a central part of Rich’s life. He ran marathons and achieved a personal goal when he qualified for and ran the Boston Marathon in 1993. A devoted coach and mentor, Rich served on local baseball boards for the Hustlers, Babe Ruth and Little League programs, proudly coaching the Little League All-Stars to a third-place finish at the state tournament in 1991. He enjoyed golfing with friends at The Dalles Country Club, whitewater rafting and trips to the Oregon coast. He was a longtime member of Zion Lutheran Church, where he served on council, was president of the congregation and president of the trust fund.

After retirement, Rich enjoyed spending time with family and friends, traveling, golfing, tending his garden and rooting for his favorite teams. He faced his journey with ALS with courage, grace and gratitude, always thankful for the love and support that surrounded him.

Rich is survived by his wife, Karen; his daughter, Brittany, and her husband, Miles Imwalle; his son, Collin, and his wife, Maya Miller; and grandchildren Elise, Abigail, Isabel and Isla. He is also survived by his brothers Tom Miller and Pat Miller. He was preceded in death by his oldest brother, Dale Miller.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to ALS Northwest, 825 NE Multnomah St., Suite 940, Portland, OR 97232; the Zion Lutheran Church Trust Fund; or a charitable organization of the donor’s choosing.

Spencer, Libby and Powell Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Services will be held Monday, Feb. 16, at 11 a.m. at Zion Lutheran Church, with a reception to follow at The Grill at The Dalles Country Club.

Obituary: Sienna Mondragon, 15, The Dalles

Sienna Mondragon, born on February 11, 2010, passed away in the early morning hours of Sunday, February 1, at the age of 15.

Born to German and Lucy Mondragon, Sienna was a cherished and deeply loved daughter and sister whose presence brought light, creativity, and strength to her family and all who knew her. From her first moments of life—when a nurse remarked on her long, beautiful eyelashes—Sienna left a lasting impression.

Mature beyond her age, Sienna was often a voice of reason to those in her circles, offering honesty, love, and gentle reminders to be kind with one another. Her voice, both in song and in spirit, filled her home and will be deeply missed.

Sienna was eagerly anticipating her 16th birthday trip to New York with her father to experience the magic of Broadway, reflecting her deep love for the arts.
