Obituary: Dawn Elaine Moore, 78, The Dalles

Obituary: Dawn Elaine Moore, 78, The Dalles

Dawn Elaine Moore was born on September 24, 1948, in McMinnville, Oregon, to Vern and Florence Markee. Dawn’s family moved to Portland, Oregon, and then to Goldendale, Washington, where she met the love of her life, Tom, in December of 1965. Tom and Dawn were married on July 2, 1966.

Dawn set out on a big adventure, flying to Germany alone to be with Tom while he served in the US Army and was stationed in Würzburg. During the two years they were in Germany, a daughter was born, Wendy Lee. When Tom completed his service, they returned to The Dalles and purchased their first home. In 1970, a son, Michael Edward, was born, and their little family was complete.

Dawn was able to stay at home with Mike and Wendy while keeping the books for their property management company. When Wendy graduated high school, Tom, Dawn, and Mike moved to Joseph, Oregon, to ranch for Tom’s Uncle Frank. Dawn saw a need for a clothing store in the community, and with that, Dawn’s Dud’s was born. You could see Dawn loved being her own boss and making a difference in her community.

Tom and Dawn eventually moved back to The Dalles, where they managed Beaverton Lodge in Beaverton, Oregon. They were home in The Dalles for half a week, giving Dawn time to work in her yard and tend to her garden. She really enjoyed having a nice yard just like her father.

Tom and Dawn didn’t retire well, and they both went to work for the school district. Dawn worked as a lunch lady and enjoyed visiting with the school kids every day.

Dawn was a loving daughter, sister, wife, and mother. She will be dearly missed. Dawn was preceded in death by her parents, Vern and Florence Markee, sister Beverly, and sister Dianne. Dawn is survived by her brother Tom, sister Yvonne, husband of 60 years, Tom, daughter Wendy (Richard) Perecz, and son Mike (Alaina) Moore. Grandkids: Johnny, Luke, Jeremy, Justin, and Mallory. Great-grandkids: Amaia, Aidan, Devin, Asher, Asuna, Asura, Oakley, and one on the way.

In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the Alzheimer’s Association.

A Celebration of life for Dawn will be held at Anderson’s Tribute Center (1401 Belmont Ave, Hood River, Oregon 97031) at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 24th, 2026, with a reception to follow.

Arrangements are under the direction of Anderson’s Tribute Center. Condolences may be shared with the family by visiting www.AndersonsTributeCenter.com

Obituary: William “Bill” Sheppard, Jr., 97, Hood River

Obituary: William “Bill” Sheppard, Jr., 97, Hood River

Lifetime Hood River Valley resident, William “Bill” Sheppard, Jr. passed away on October 1, 2025, in Hood River, Oregon.

Bill was born on March 30, 1928, to William Orville Sheppard, Sr., and Ruth Jane (Jordan). Bill was blessed to have three sisters, Jane, the older sister, and Sue and Sally, younger twin sisters. Bill and his sisters all grew up in Hood River and attended Hood River High School.

Bill graduated from Hood River High School in 1946, where he played football, basketball, and ran track. He went on to attend Oregon State University and became a lifelong Beaver fan and supporter. During his time at Oregon State, Bill became a member of the ROTC program. This was his pathway into the United States Air Force. Bill proudly served his country during the Korean conflict.

When Bill was a senior in high school, he met Virginia Ford Wilson, a Parkdale high school student, at the local Strawberry Festival. In 1950, Bill and Virginia were married. On September 2, 2025, they celebrated their 75th wedding anniversary with their children. Their 75 years of marriage were wonderful years. They traveled the world to enjoy the many incredible sights in Australia, England, Switzerland, Spain, and many places in Canada and the United States. Bill and Virginia loved road trips. Even a long road trip to Alaska! Each visit created many stories and experiences. In the 70’s, Bill and Virginia made a second home in Palm Springs. They loved spending their winters in the warmer climate. They became “snowbirds” for many years.

After Bill’s time in the service, he worked for his dad, W.O. Sheppard, and his Uncle, C.M. Sheppard. Bill continued to run the implement business for many years until his oldest son, Craig, was able to take part of the reins of the business. A bonus for Bill was when his grandson Ben joined the team.

Bill was very active in community organizations. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge and served on the boards of the Pine Grove Fire Department, Hood River Memorial Hospital, and Idlewild Cemetery. Bill joined the Hood River Rotary Club in 1957 and was still a member at his death. Bill was a member of Hood River Valley Christian Church.

Bill joined the Crag Rats in 1946 and was very active as a mountain climber and rescuer. He successfully reached the summit of all the major mountains in the Cascade Range at least twice. A great joy for Bill was knowing that Virginia and all of his children had reached the summit of Mount Hood. A grandson was also able to make the climb with his grandfather. He would and could tell mountain climbing stories about every expedition. Every trip in his journal ended with: “It was a good day”. Hiking and camping were activities that Bill and his family enjoyed.

Bill loved his family. He loved to play cards of any kind. He loved to play with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. The cribbage board was always on the kitchen table, where Bill and Virginia had at least one daily game. A lot of teasing and laughter happened around the card table.

Bill is survived by his wife, Virginia. Two sisters, Sue and Sally. His four children, Craig Sheppard (Jean), Keith Sheppard (Greta), Debbie Sheppard McCann (Kevin), and Dodie Sheppard Sims (James). 13 grandchildren, Ben Sheppard (Rachel), Merridy Bickford Stehlik (John), Brian McCann (Sage), Carra Sheppard Cadman (Brian) Chris McCann (Dana), Amy Bickford Burtner (Adrian) Corey McCann Sims (Scott) Audrey Sheppard Forrest (Jeremy) Emily Bickford Struthers (Jeff), Mark Sheppard (Amy), Michael LaMaita (Karli), Chris LaMaita (Kayla), and Drew LaMaita (Dara). Bill had 26 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. As Bill always said, there are many generations of Sheppards to come.

A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, November 1, 2025, at Hood River Valley (975 Indian Creek Road, Hood River, OR 97031).  Columbarium Urn Placement at Idlewilde Cemetery will follow at a later date.

Obituary: Diane Rosalie (Monagan) Bungum, 79, The Dalles

Obituary: Diane Rosalie (Monagan) Bungum, 79, The Dalles

Diane Rosalie (Monagan) Bungum was born August 25, 1945, in rural central New York, near the city of Cortland. Her parents were Clifford and Elinor Monagan, both lifetime employees of the Smith-Corona Typewriter factory in nearby Groton, N.Y. Diane and her older sister and younger brother grew up on a pre-Civil War 56-acre farm where over the years they kept a few horses, cows, pigs, ducks and chickens, as well as the usual dogs and cats. It was a rural life in dairy country, a life she dearly loved, and missed when she left it for college.

She attended the State University of New York in Albany for a couple of years, then joined VISTA and moved to western Oregon in 1965, where she worked with migrant worker families. After that she had various
short-term jobs in the Portland area, including several as a waitress.
She met and married Richard Humphrey there and they had a son, Aiden, before they were divorced. She completed her B.A. degree in English from the University of Oregon in 1973.

That year she met Steve Bungum, a former high school English teacher; they married in Eugene in 1974 and moved to The Dalles the next day, where her husband worked for the next 28 years as Library Media
Specialist at The Dalles High School. Their son Peter was added to the family in 1977. Before the office closed, she worked for several years at Oregon Legal Services (legal aid). That was followed by several
years at the local Community Action Program and at the Center for Living, where she was employed until her retirement in 2002.

Diane was a kind-hearted, hard-working person who could empathize with others, especially those whose life was difficult. She was beloved of many of the developmentally disabled adults she assisted over the years, and enjoyed attending parties and dances with these folks, put on by the ARC of Oregon. She was an avid life-long reader, regularly coming home with a large pile of books from the public library, a
habit she continued long after being diagnosed with dementia around 2020. Diane also loved to travel, and made trips back to see her folks in the home she grew up in, in central N.Y., sometimes with her husband, sometimes alone. Together they visited many relatives, most of whom in the Midwest and East. She also often indulged her husband's love of camping and photographing around Oregon and the West, and also enjoyed travel offering more comfy sleeping arrangements, like hotels, motels, and B & B's!

Diane always liked to be busy doing something, like walking, hiking gardening, cooking and reading. She really liked to watch a good movie in the evening, especially with popcorn! She was very proud of Aiden
and Peter, both of whom have advanced degrees, and loved them dearly, and her eight wonderful grandchildren, who loved their Grandma Diane, and several of whom stepped up to help her as her disease progressed. She was moved to a care facility in Eugene in early July, where, after suffering many difficult times, she passed away on September 29th.

Basically, Diane was a sweet, loving, understanding (usually!) and kind human being, doing her best to be a life-enhancer for others. She will be dearly missed.

Diane is survived by her husband Steve, sons Aiden and Peter, and grandchildren Isaac, Johnpaul, Joseph, Lillian, Evan, Jeremy, Runa and Haakon. No funeral is planned. Remembrances can be made to the ARC of
Oregon, Hospice of the Gorge, and Wasco County Humane Society.
