Obituary: Renée Anne Clarke, 42, Parkdale

She was a successful high school athlete and during her summers at home, Renée worked for the US Forest Service at Multnomah Falls as a groundskeeper and learned to love hiking. She achieved her doctorate in Clinical Psychology and her social work led her to multiple adventures in the US. She passed on Oct. 10.

In Loving Memory

Renée Anne Clarke “Lou” “NiNi”

1981 - 2024

Our sweet angel, Renée Anne Clarke, left us on October 10th, 2024, at 10 a.m. at her home in Parkdale, Oregon.

Renée entered our lives on December 5th, 1981 on a beautiful rainy day, a wonderful daughter born to Kenneth and Alice Clarke (Campbell), then left us far too soon on October 10th, 2024. Though her life on earth was too short, Renée accomplished more than many people do in a full lifetime. She was a loving friend to many, an accomplished three-sport athlete in high school and champion softball player in college, and a scholar who earned her Doctorate degree in Clinical Psychology.

Renée grew up in Parkdale within a great neighborhood of friends and family: Chad, Jeremy, Kenny, Trevor, Carey, Melissa, Jackie, Jared, her brother Nate, the Mabens, Aunt Widman, the Nelsons and the Merzs. She started her athletic activities at age 3 with Rainbow Gymnastics. She soon became a soccer star, and one of Coach Ron's favorite players. In high school, she was named player of the year by her teammates. Renée also excelled in basketball, and the Hood River Valley High crowds came to watch her and her teammates play: her cousin Calli, Darci, Britney, Camile, Alli, Carrie, and many more. Renée’s favorite sport was softball, though she was named First Team All-League in all three sports.

Renée graduated from Hood River Valley High School in 2000, and went on to do her undergraduate studies at Pacific Lutheran, where she met her Best Friends, Sara and Risa, with whom she played softball. What a time they had and in 2002 won the Division Ill League Softball championship and came in 4th in the nation.

During her summers at home, Renée worked for the US Forest Service at Multnomah Falls as a grounds keeper, and learned to love hiking. On one of her Christmas Holidays, she was able to go to Germany on a psychology tour. Renée graduated from Pacific Lutheran with honors, with a degree in Psychology, and worked as a social worker for six months. She returned home for another six months, and then in 2005 was accepted for a graduate program at Carlos Albizu University in Miami, Florida.

Hello, World!

So off to Florida we went, in support of her new life there. Two days after we arrived, Hurricane Katrina hit. During the five years Renée was in Florida, that was one of the many adventures we had, along with the Miami Zoo, South Beach, the Butterfly Sanctuary, and our wonderful trip to the Keys, in the yellow convertible. While in graduate school, Renée did an Internship at the Miami Federal Correctional Institution for two years. In 2011, she received a Certification of Appreciation from their Psychology Services Department for all of her hard work and dedication. In August of 2012, Renée completed her dissertation on "Gender Stereotypes and How They Affect Sentencing of Women Who Kill," (Thank You Vicky) and graduated with a Doctor of Psychology in Clinical Psychology, Distinction with Honors.

Renée was next off to Larned, Kansas in 2013 to start her post-doctorate work, in a State Mental Institution. Her beloved dog, Scobbie, moved with her. Upon completion of that work, she came home for a year while looking for a position, and was able to spend time with her new nephew Will and niece Hailey. Renée then accepted a position working in a State Mental Intuition in San Antionio, Texas in August 2014. There, she loved her work and new location.

Sadly, Renée was diagnosed with Huntington's Disease in March of 2015, and her health began to deteriorate. So Renée and Scobbie came home in November 2015. Our promise to Renée was she would be able to live at home with her family, and thanks to all of Christie and Nate's help, we were able to keep this promise. Back home, Renée enjoyed going to all of her nephew Will's activities (while always cheering him on), fishing (with her Father and Kelsey), seeing the horses, and spending time with her family and friends. But Renée’s health continued to deteriorate over the time from 2015 to 2024. Thankfully, we were able to have her for nine wonderful years with so much love from her kind, happy spirit.

Renée is survived by her parents Ken and Alice Clarke, brother Nate Clarke, sister-in-law Christie Clarke, nephew Will Clarke, and many loving aunts, uncles and cousins.

As Renée’s family, we would like to give a special thank you to the Caregivers who gave Renée such wonderful care: our dear Kelsey, who was with Renée the last year of her life, Morgan, Angie, Tracey, and my wonderful sister Shirley. We would  also like to thank Wendy Best for spending two hours every Saturday, for two years, reading and playing her violin for Renée. Finally, our greatest appreciation to all the many people who took time to see Renée and make her smile.

Obituary: Darold LeRoy Arrington, 90, Parkdale

In his early years, his father worked in logging camps around Oregon, but when it came time to settle down and go to school, Darold’s father cleared a place in Canby, Oregon and built a home with no indoor plumbing, but it had a well with an indoor pump.

Darold LeRoy Arrington

Darold LeRoy Arrington came into this world on June 7, 1934 in Medford, Oregon. He was an only child to his parents Lloyd W Arrington and Bertha C. Whiteley Arrington.

In his early years, his father worked in logging camps around Oregon, but when it came time to settle down and go to school, Darold’s father cleared a place in Canby, Oregon and built a home with no indoor plumbing, but it had a well with an indoor pump. Over the years the family moved to Yreka, Portland and then to Jacksonville to be near family. Darold’s father passed away when Darold was only 15, and he and his mother moved to Portland before eventually settling in Long Beach, California.

In 1957 Darold was drafted into the US Army where he served honorably for three years. When he got out of the Army, he went to work for North America Aviation & Autonetics in Santa Ana, California. There he met Jenna Lee Coady on a blind date, and they were married on September 23, 1961. They moved to Orange, California and had five children.

In 1970, Darold moved his family to Roseburg, Oregon for a short time before settling in Parkdale, Oregon in 1971 where he resided for 52 years. Over the years, Darold showed his handy side by his ability to fix anything from plumbing, electronics, and mechanics while he worked for Ted Hackett’s TV and repair, Paul Henny as well as Paddock’s fixing CB radios. In 1979 he was hired on at The United Telephone Company as a Central Office Technician until he retired in 1999. Darold was a hard worker and made sure Jenna Lee was able to maintain her dream of keeping horses and a small farm. He was always bucking hay even though he had hay fever.

Throughout his life, Darold played the guitar and sang for the community and his church. Those who knew him will tell you that his voice rang out with a beautiful clarity. He even continued to sing for residents and staff at Brookside during his last year there. We will miss that voice very much.

Darold was adventurous, and he traveled the world with Jenna Lee by his side. They visited Hawaii, The Caribbean, Bahamas, Cook Islands, Fiji, Alaska, Canada, and took a three-month trip to Australia, New Zealand and Tasmania as well as a total of 6 months across the United States!

Darold was wonderful husband and father as well as a faithful man, serving his church as a Deacon, teacher and singer.

Darold is survived by his wife of 62 years, Jenna Lee Arrington; His children Bryon (Dixie); Bruce (Hope); Brad; Julie (Tony) Clark; and Justine (John) Andersen. He is also survived by 12 grandchildren and 6 great -grandchildren.

“Those who live in the shelter of the Most High will find rest in the shadow of the Almighty.” Psalm 91:1

A memorial service for Darold will be held on Saturday, September 21, 2024, at 10 a.m. at Faith Bible Church, 1889 Belmont Drive, Hood River, Oregon 97031.

Obituary: Eichi Hirata, Sr., Parkdale; Memorial Service set for July 9

Obituary: Eichi Hirata, Sr., Parkdale; Memorial Service set for July 9

Eichi Hirata, Sr. (90) Eichi was born December 9, 1929, on the family homestead in Parkdale, Oregon joining older sisters, Chieko (Kari) and Fusako.

His father Katsui (Kay) Hirata and mother Kumako (Inukai) emigrated from Okiyama, Japan for a new life in America. Kumako died young as a result of a car accident and Katsui remarried to Toshiko (Shiraishi) and from that union came brother Bill (Masado) and sister Marie (Shizuko).

Eichi went to school in Parkdale until he and his family were re-located to Tule Lake, California internment camp under federal executive order #9066 during World War II. After the war the family returned to Parkdale and was able, with some difficulty, to resume living on the homestead.

Eichi graduated from old Parkdale High School and worked in the family orchard until he was drafted into the Army in 1950. He served honorably in Germany during the Korean War. After the Army, he married Charlotte Asayo Hoashi and they had three children together: son Harvey and twin sons Edward and Eugene.

After their union dissolved, he married Vivian Lucille Rhodes. Four children were born during that union, son Eichi Jr, daughters Terrie, Candie, and Sandie and stepdaughter Joanne also became family. Eichi’s third marriage to Iola Marie Ramoz produced son Todd.

Eichi gave up farming and worked for Hood River County road crew for over 10 years. He also worked for a paving company for a few years before going to work for Zeller Excavating, where he stayed until his retirement. It was during his time with Zeller that he met and married his final wife Gayle Marie Thorstad.

As children are want to do, his went forth and multiplied giving them 25 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and several great great-grandchildren. He returned to farming a small pear orchard as well as keeping a large garden.

He and Gayle both enjoyed gardening together. He also loved to fish with friends or by himself and was an excellent fisherman. He was the go-to guy for finding matsutake (pine) mushrooms in the fall for himself and Gayle, as well as other family members.

Eichi was never a talker, but oh boy could he listen. His favorite family activity was sitting with them and listening to the varied conversations. He loved his children and enjoyed nothing better than visits from any or all of them and he doted on all his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He passed away on May 19, 2020, at home with family by his side, as he had wanted to. He leaves behind his wife of 33 years Gayle Hirata; children Harvey (Rhonda), Ed (Doreen), Eichi Jr (Ginger), Terrie (Tyler), Candie (Stanley), Sandie (Tom), Todd (Jackie) and Joanne; sisters Fusako(Masanao) and Marie (Jerry); cousins Noriko (James), Shugi Hirata; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister Chieko; and son Eugene.

A MEMORIAL SERVICE is set for 11:00 a.m., Saturday, July 9, 2022, at Idlewilde Cemetery of Hood River, Oregon.

Obituary: Nilsa Jane Nippolt

Obituary: Nilsa Jane Nippolt, Hood River

Nilsa Jane Nippolt

Nilsa Jane Nippolt was born in San Juan, Puerto Rico on April 4, 1963, the fourth of five daughters.

Her sunny smile and sweet nature made her a family favorite. The family moved to Southern California where Nilsa‘s love of tennis and of horses began. Nilsa‘s beloved pony Marty was her frequent companion and they were seen all around Laguna Beach, once even in a very tony Newport Beach mansion. The family moved to The Dalles and then to Hood River in 1973 where Nilsa continued to ride and play tennis.

She was also known for her crazy pranks and her love of fashion. A natural athlete, she skied and did gymnastics and danced in several musicals. Any open space, including the living room, was a good spot for a cartwheel or back walkover. Nilsa graduated in 1981 from Hood River Valley high school and then the University of Oregon in 1985. After graduation Nilsa moved to California to work on The Tonight Show at NBC and at Kbig and KJOY radio stations where she worked in PR and met such dignitaries as Barbara Bush.

She married Mike Zeman in 1988 and moved to Hood River.

Nilsa worked in sales for Sprint and later Cisco foods. One year she was Cisco foods top National sales person. Her son Sebastian Z Zeman was born in 2003.

Still riding horses, playing tennis and charming many, she built a log home in Parkdale that she eventually ran as a Bed and Breakfast called Bigfoot Lodge. Nilsa met many people who became her friends. Her fun-loving, gregarious and glamorous personality attracted many people to her.

She traveled and went on a lot of great vacations and adventures. She had horses that she loved and she played on several tennis teams. She was incredibly proud of her son, and spent a lot of time watching him play sports.

Nilsa sold her bed-and-breakfast this year and had planned a future of more travel and recreation. She played and won a tennis tournament the weekend before she had surgery for ovarian cancer. Nilsa unexpectedly died of complications of her illness on December 23, 2021.

Her broken-hearted family includes her mother Sharon Koehlor Nippolt, her son Sebastian Zeman, sisters Teresa Nippolt, Kate Huttemann (Mark ), Annie Bryant (Clark) and a huge family who adored her and are devastated by her death. Nilsa was predeceased by her father Robert John Nippolt and her sister Ellen Nippolt. Life will not be the same without her.
