Obituary: Clair Dale Taylor

Obituary: Clair Dale Taylor

Clair Dale Taylor

January 2, 1932 - June 26, 2021

Clair Dale Taylor passed peacefully into Heaven on June 26, 2021. During his 89 years on Earth he was known by most as Dale, but those whom he loved the most called him dad, or papa, and best yet, Grandpapa.

Dale was born on January 2, 1932 in The Dalles, Oregon to Lloyd V. and Emma S. Taylor. He graduated from The Dalles High School in 1950 and joined the National Guard. Dale married Linda Marlene Stoop, his childhood sweetheart, whom he met in sixth grade at Joseph G. Wilson Elementary. Linda passed away in 1986 after 35 years of marriage.

In his life, Dale spent countless hours operating heavy machinery. He worked with the Oregon State Highway Department constructing the new freeway from Hood River to The Dalles. He also worked his grandfather’s wheat ranch on 15 Mile before becoming Street Superintendent for the City of The Dalles. In 1964, just after the major flood, Dale purchased his 955H Track Loader and built T&M Excavation Company. That same excavator now sits proudly near his home on Mill Creek, but in its prime, it built many streets and roads in The Dalles and Hood River.  It excavated land for new homes and businesses and cleared many orchards for growers all around the gorge. The worn handles, shaped perfectly to fit his hands, show why he was known as an “excavating magician.” He never lost his touch operating big machinery. During the spring of 2020, he was thrilled to help his grandson pioneer new roads and prep areas for new cherry trees.

Dale spent twenty summers at the log home he built in Alaska. He loved fishing for salmon on the Kenai River, clamming for razors in the Cook Inlet, and catching halibut out of the Pacific. He held dear the many friends he met during his summers in Alaska. He also greatly enjoyed hunting The Blue Mountains. He hunted there for over 50 years, and in 2017 he drew the Mt. Emily bull tag which he filled surrounded by a camp full of proud and happy family and friends.

There wasn’t a day in his life that he wasn’t doing what he loved to do. He loved being around people and spent time doing things he enjoyed such as watching his great-grandchildren play baseball, building rock walls by hand around his home, and tending to his garden. He lived his life with hope, love, and a determination to “keep going”. His kind, friendly smile will be missed, but will forever be remembered by those who knew and loved him. His soul is now free to dance with loved ones in Heaven, operate air-conditioned equipment, and fish rivers overflowing with salmon.

Dale is survived by his son, Scott Taylor (April) and daughter Joni Tenneson (William). His grandchildren Jared Taylor (Stephanie), Jeffrey Taylor, Hailey Elliott (Shane), and Andrew Tenneson (Samantha) as well as his many great-grandchildren, Preston, Scotty, Matthew, Kellen, Easton, William, Camden, and Andie. He is also survived by his long-time friend Winnie Westland Milby, and his loyal dog, Sadie.

Service for Dale will be held at 10 am on Saturday, July 17, 2021, at Spencer, Libby, and Powell funeral home in The Dalles, Oregon.

Obituary: Charles "Chuck" Peterson

Obituary: Charles "Chuck" Peterson

Charles “Chuck” Nels Peterson was born August 31, 1946 in Eads, Colorado to Verna Carol (Briley) Immer and Everett Immer. (Everett was who raised Chuck, he did not have a relationship with his biological father.) Chuck passed away on June 11, 2021 at OHSU from health complications related to his service as a Marine. At the age of 17, Chuck enlisted with the United States Marine Corp where he served 4 years active duty, 2 of those years in Vietnam and then spent another 2 years as a reserve. Chuck obtained rank of Corporal, was an expert rifleman and a machine gunner. Chuck was very proud of his service to the United States of America, as he should be.

After his discharge from the military, Chuck met the love of his life; Vicki Shertzer. Chuck and Vicki married July 29, 1967 and enjoyed 54 years of marriage. Chuck and Vicki lived in Seal Beach, California until they moved to Hood River in 1980. Chuck and Vicki moved back to California then to Beaverton for a short while before finding themselves back in the Hood River Valley. Family was very important to Chuck. Being closer to his kids, grandkids and siblings was the driving force in Chuck and Vicki returning “home” to the Hood River Valley where Chuck resided until his death.

Chuck began a lifelong career in the concrete industry after his service time. Chuck worked in the trade in Southern California until him and his family moved to Hood River where he started his company “Chuck Peterson Concrete”. Chuck’s son’s both worked for the company, learning from their dad. Chuck passed on his work ethics and his concrete expertise to the boys who both went on to become contractors. Chuck worked with Jason until 2 months prior to his passing. On “pour days” you would find Chuck running the chute and yelling at the “kids”. Chuck loved to pass along his knowledge to anybody that wanted to learn.

Chuck never met a child that he did not like. He had a way with kids that was remarkable. Chuck loved children. You could find him entertaining all the kids at any function. Chuck was known for shenanigans such as the train robberies with the Mount Hood Railroad, wearing tinfoil hat and cape while running down the road during hunting season or just making noises and faces to get kids to laugh. Chuck made phenomenal spaghetti! He would cook it by the gallons for the wrestling team fundraiser, selling any extra in take home containers.

If you never tried his spaghetti, you missed something amazing. Good thing he passed his recipe on to his son Jason! Very seldom did you ever see Chuck without his trusty sidekicks of Opie and Ebert. His 2 dogs went everywhere with him!

When Chuck was not working you could usually find him in the mountains hunting, camping or mining for gold or along the river fishing. While living in California, Chuck and Vicki spent most weekends on the dunes; dune duggying. Chuck and his sons went on several hunts in British Columbia, Canada and in true “Chuckers” fashion, made lifelong friends with the guides. Those were very treasured memories and friendships for Chuck.

Chuck was preceded in death by his Parents Verna and Evertt Immer and his brother “Mick” Peterson. Chuck is survived by his wife Vicki (Shertzer) Peterson, Sons; Chuck Jr (Trisha) Peterson, Jason (Tiffany) Peterson, Grandchildren Billie (Robert) Frasier, Chas Peterson, Nikole (Hans) Peterson, Brie Peterson, Juan Hernandez-Peterson and Great Grand-daughter Kella “Dink” Frasier. Chuck is also survived by his sister Beverly Immer and brother; Vince Immer and numerous nieces, nephews and extended family members. Chuck had many “family” members that were not blood relatives but that never mattered to Chuck. If you were a friend, you were family!

Obituary: John Harold Lundell

Obituary: John Harold Lundell

John Harold Lundell

John Harold Lundell

John Harold Lundell

“Life is a team sport played in many different arenas.” It involves tremendous support from, and to, family, friends, church and community.

John Harold Lundell was a life-long resident of The Dalles, and he invested his time and talents in those many different arenas, which included the plumbing contractor business he built with his father, service to the City of The Dalles as councilman and mayor, and his passions for music and local history.  He exemplified kindness and service above self. He loved his wife, Donna, who passed away unexpectedly in 2008, his children Kim (Dan Boldt) and Chris (Charlie Houmard), granddaughters Elise (Nat Woodsmith) and Alexa (Garrett Schmidt), great-granddaughter Fern Woodsmith, sister Marilyn Urness, the Oregon Ducks, fried chicken with mashed potatoes and gravy, Twinkies, and anything by Ludwig van Beethoven.

He felt blessed in so many ways!  And he was very modest about his accomplishments – among them: in the 1953 Oregon High School Basketball Tournament he was named to the First Team All-State and had the most points scored in the tournament; he was instrumental in the preservation and transportation of the Anderson homestead to the Fort Dalles Museum complex; he was awarded  The Dalles’ Community Service award; he served the Oregon Mayors Association as president; he was appointed to the Historic Columbia River Highway Advisory Committee;  he was the Cherry Festival Grand Marshall with his Cherry Sweetheart granddaughter Alexa; he was chosen as Wasco County Pioneer Man of the Year; and he had three published books on local history.

John was born October 23, 1935, to Harold and Beulah (Davis) Lundell in The Dalles, where he graduated from high school in 1953.  He graduated from the University of Oregon, where he was a member of Phi Delta Theta, in 1957.  Married his childhood sweetheart, Donna Lee, in 1955.  They were married 53 wonderful years! He passed away in his sleep on June 13, 2021.  At this time, due to COVID, there are no plans for a public memorial service. The family will have a private burial service, and thanks the staff at The Springs at Mill Creek memory care unit and Heart of Hospice for their kindness and care.  If you would like to honor John’s memory, donations to the Zion Lutheran Trust Fund, the Discovery Center, or Fort Dalles Museum would be lovingly appreciated.

We will always cherish his memory in our hearts.  Please remember John, with a smile, whenever you hear something by Beethoven!
