Obituary: Loren Wesley Flory (Butch)

Loren Wesley Flory (Butch) passed away November 5, 2021, in Dallesport, WA. Loren was born to Lloyd Strifert and Manzanita V. Bader Strifert in Everett, WA on July 20, 1943. Loren never knew Lloyd Strifert. His mother remarried and he was raised by Floyd Flory since the age of 3.

He graduated from high school in Gresham, OR. He landed a job with the US Postal Service shortly out of high school. He had a long career with them for 26 years. In 1973 he met Terry Waitman who became his partner of 10 years and his lifelong friend. Terry came with 2 beautiful young girls April and Autumn. He jumped into that role with both feet. When his mother’s health failed he faithfully took care of her until her death in 1983. After visiting his friend John Evanson in Alaska, Loren decided that was the life for him, so at the age of 50 took an early retirement from the Postal Service, sold everything and moved to Alaska.

Loren had many hobbies which included hunting, fishing, restoring cars, garage saling, and took great pride in the two homes he built in Alaska. Fishing and hunting and the outdoors were his true love. Loren has many close friends. If you were a friend of Loren’s, you were a friend forever. Most things that Loren bought or did were for other people.

Obituary: Lucille Sherrell Herman

Obituary: Lucille Sherrell Herman

Lucille Sherrell Herman passed away on November 11, 2021, at Ashley Manor in Hood River, Oregon.  Lucille was born April 30, 1930, in Hood River, Oregon to Louis and Myrtle (Bradley) Rhoades and was 91 years of age at the time of her passing.

Lucille was the youngest of three children (brothers, Vay Rhoades and Harry Rhoades).  She went to school in Parkdale at Mount Hood School. At birth, she was named Mattie Myrtle after her mom, Myrtle and her mom’s twin sister, Mattie. The boys didn’t like that name so they changed it and called her Lucille.

Lucille married Robert “Toby” Sherrell on August 23, 1948, and had three children, Darlene, Rick and Roger.  Toby and Lucille participated and enjoyed many activities with the Westside Fire Department over the years. They had many friends and frequently square danced at the Rockford Grange.  She sewed many dresses and shirts for Toby and herself, as well as other dancers. Toby passed away on December 12, 1980.

One of her many passions was crocheting. She enjoyed it from age 6 until a few days before passing.  She loved any kind of crafts---needlework, knitting, and especially sewing which started early in 4-H at age 10.  She earned many awards throughout her years in 4-H.  Later, as an adult, she frequently entered her creative projects and won many blue ribbons (and one red, that she was very upset about!) in the Hood River County Fair.  She sewed her daughter’s school clothes and later sewed quilts, dolls and wall hangings for all her kids, grandkids, nieces and nephews.  Her talents were popular at Christmas as she took orders and created dolls for many young children over the years. Her creative abilities helped many charities as well.  She made doll clothes for needy children at Christmas. She created knitted sweaters, booties and hats for newborns at the hospital. Later she crocheted squares to create baby blankets for new babies.

Lucille was a great cook and always had good dessert.  Her apple turnovers and cheesecake were the best.  She was always doing projects around the house—removing a wall, painting, putting up wallpaper, changing the furniture or fiddling with some creative project.

Lucille loved shoes and always had a large collection.  When we would be shopping, if you lost her, you could usually find her in the shoe department. Grandma always said you could never have too many shoes.

Many know the stubbornness of Lucille. Once she made up her mind, that was the way it was going to be.  All the senators and congressmen knew her by name. When grandma said no, she meant it.

Later Lucille married Jerry Herman in September 1984.  They enjoyed traveling to Reno and many camping trips to fish. Jerry passed away on May 25, 2012.

Lucille was a longtime resident at Down Manor.  She received Resident of the Month for February 2008.  When she moved out this fall to Ashley Manor, after 15 years, she was told that she held the record for the longest residence to date.

Lucille lived a long and happy life. She was known by all as a very sweet and kind lady.

She had such a positive impact on her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. She created a very kind and caring family.

Lucille is survived by her children, Darlene (Doug) Neufeldt, Rick (Lynn) Sherrell, and Roger (Senay Burton) Sherrell, her grandchildren Jane (Joel) Osborne and their son, Aaron, Teresa (Larry) Ellifritz and their son, Alex and daughter, Emilie, Audi (Ryan) Samsel and their sons Drew (Jo Barwick), Hunter, and Nash, Cassy (Heath) Stintzi and their sons, Tyrone (Kali Wetherell) and Toby, and Kary (Sara Nye) Sherrell,  sister-in-law’s, Nita Griffith and Shirley Rhoades, many nieces, nephews and other family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Louis and Myrtle Rhoades, husbands, Toby Sherrell and Jerry Herman, and her brothers, Vay Rhoades and Harry Rhoades.

The family would like to thank the staff at Ashley Manor and Hospice for the helpful and considerate care in the last weeks.  Donations may be made to Providence Hospice of the Gorge (1630 Woods Ct., Hood River).

There will be no service at this time.  We will be planning a celebration of life next summer when the weather and Covid are better.

Obituary: Lee W. Nance

Obituary: Lee W. Nance

Lee W. Nance, a Hood River resident, passed away at his son Walter’s home with family by his side on November 2, 2021. Lee was born on February 27, 1932, in Hood River, Oregon to Tona Aquilla and Mabel Elizabeth Nance and was 89 years of age at the time of his death.

Lee was not quite two years old when his father, Tona, passed away from an accident here in Hood River and shortly after his mother, Mabel, moved the family to Juneau, Alaska. There in Juneau, Lee met the love of his life, Lois, in third grade and they stayed friends throughout high school and were married in 1954. Lee worked as an aircraft mechanic for Alaska Coastal Airlines in the early days of their marriage and worked weekends as a plumber and carpenter. In 1964 the family moved to Roseburg, Oregon where Lee worked as an auto mechanic and millwright while living on their 120-acre ranch. His children have fond memories of farm life with all the cows and chickens and space to play. In 1972 the family relocated to Hood River to be near Lee’s mother, Mabel, who had moved back home to Hood River. While in Hood River Lee worked as an auto mechanic, at Jantzen’s as a mechanic and finally retired from Diamond Fruit. Lee was an inventor and loved teaching his children and grandchildren many useful things.

Lee is preceded in death by his Mother and Father, his wife Lois Lawrence Nance and brothers Loyd, Eric, Marion and Donald Nance, sisters Idabelle Bryson, Florence Heppler and Marian Bell. Lee is survived by his brother Russell Hopkins and wife Nancy, his children; Walter Nance, Linda Gregory, Diane Orcutt, Daniel Nance, Julie Wilbern and their spouses, other family; Hank Bryson, Bonnie Bryson, Jill Bryson and Steve Nance and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, cousins, nieces and nephews.

Lee was a very intelligent, yet simple, man. He was somewhat illiterate and taught himself to read by practicing reading the bible. He held to his faith in God and love for family. Underlined in his bible is: 1 Cor. 13:12-13 “For now we see only a reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known. And now these three remain - faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.”

There were times in Lee’s life when he struggled with his mental health. But in the end, Lee passed away at home with quiet and peaceful dignity.

Obituary: Kyle M. Wood

Obituary: Kyle M. Wood

Kyle M. Wood

Kyle M. Wood, a much-loved husband, father, son, brother, uncle and friend passed away at home on November 4, 2021, after a courageous battle with cancer. Kyle M. (Berry) Wood was born November 5, 1973, to his parents Mary and Colin Berry, on the first snowy winter day.

Kyle grew up in Hood River, making many long-lasting friendships over the years. He attended Opal & Eldon Mills’ Preschool, Midvalley Elem, Wyeast Middle School and graduated from Hood River Valley High School in 1992. After graduation, Kyle was gifted an Outward-Bound wilderness course by his father, which he described as being a profound life-changing experience. Kyle moved to Anchorage, Alaska in 1996 where he lived for 7 years and worked in the glass industry. Kyle made many visits back to Hood River to see family and friends, including Andrea, with whom he had a strong friendship since 1995. Kyle and Andrea’s friendship sparked into a loving relationship in 2002. Kyle was determined to return home to Hood River to build a life with her on Valentine’s Day in 2003.

On a snowy winter day, Kyle and Andrea married in an intimate ceremony officiated by his father at his mother and stepfather’s Hood River home on January 1, 2004. Later that year they welcomed their son, Ethan, who was born in October. In 2007, Kyle adopted Andrea’s two boys, Brandon and Trystan. He was a devoted father who stepped into the role with ease and always made family a priority. He taught his boys many life skills and introduced them to his own personal hobbies, such as his love of modifying and customizing all of his vehicles.

Kyle and Andrea loved raising their sons in Hood River near many friends and family. They enjoyed traveling, camping, and DIY home improvement projects, including building their dream home in the Rockford area of Hood River Valley in 2019. Kyle was best known for his calm demeanor, sense of humor, kindness and caring for others, wit and warm smile that lit up a room. Kyle worked in various management positions at Cardinal Glass for 18 years and was well-liked and appreciated by all. He enjoyed his work because he enjoyed the people he worked with, and over the years he developed many long-lasting friendships he would describe as a second family.

Kyle is survived by his wife Andrea (Francisco) Wood; his sons Ethan Wood, Trystan & Brandon Fisher-Wood; his parents Mary & Buck Hobbs, and Colin Wood & Elaine Maahs; his siblings Devin and Carrie Hobbs, Kelsey Newhouse (Chris), Amancay Blank (Ryan), Canela Springer (Tom); his nephews William and Wyatt Springer and Kaipo Newhouse; and one much-anticipated grandson, due in December, to be named Kyle, after his grandpa.

It was Kyle’s wish that any memorial tributes be made in the form of charitable donations to St. Jude.

There will be a celebration of life for family and friends overlooking the Hood River Valley during blossom season in 2022.
