Obituary: Roger Lee Osborne, Mount Hood Parkdale
Roger Lee Osborne
Roger Lee Osborne, age 79, of Mount Hood Parkdale, Oregon, gently passed away in his sleep on July 3, 2022, at 3:00 a.m. Roger spent his last six months bravely managing advanced congestive heart failure and cancer treatments for myeloma (plasma cells).
Through it all, he maintained his usual positivity and a good sense of humor while making plans for the future. He was a very shy person which made him a genuinely good listener. He would much rather hear about what you were doing than share about himself, yet he was so accomplished.

Roger was born on April 2, 1943, in the coal mining company town of Ashland, West Virginia, to Firman Osborne and Mae O’Neal Roark. He spent his early childhood in Mountain City/ Shouns, Tennessee with his parents and two older sisters: Lois and Phyllis. By the age of five, he had lived in several South Atlantic states, including Delaware, before his family packed up everything they owned and drove cross country to Parkdale, Oregon. They settled in Hood River County where his father worked hard as a logger and farmer. His mother and older sisters worked in the fruit orchards & packing houses. All visitors were welcome in their musically gifted home. Neighbors still remember blue grass music being written, played and sung into the early hours.
He graduated with honors from Wy’East/ Hood River High School in 1961. His parents were proud that he had earned an academic scholarship to attend Pacific University for economics and mathematics. Two years later he transferred to Portland State University where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration/ Accounting.
During college, Roger met and married Josette F. Lentz of Portland, Oregon & the Confederated Tribes of the Colville Reservation. They had three children together: Michelle, Pierre and Jacques. In time they divorced which led to him taking a job in New Mexico. It was there, in 1973, he met the love of his life, Joann Cadena Saiz. With this union, he was blessed with the addition of three children from Joann’s first marriage: Vincent, Richard and Rebecca.
He enjoyed working with numbers. This led to a 49-year career in the accounting field where he started as a clerk and ended with the title of Chief Financial Officer. He made lifelong friends in each workplace: Portland General Electric, Public Utility-- Clerk/ Accounting Assistant, Portland, OR; Smoke Craft, Inc., Food Manufacturing-- Assistant Controller, Albany, OR; Erickson, Inc., Aerospace Manufacturing-- Controller, Portland, OR; Hinkle Investments/ Shopping Malls-Homes-Family Fun Center-- Controller, Albuquerque, NM; Ventura Port District-- Chief Financial Officer (CFO), Ventura, CA; and Hattenhauer Distributing/Transportation/Energy Company-- Controller, The Dalles, OR.
He officially retired in 2014.
Career Highlights: (1) Roger was asked by the FBI to consider working in forensic accounting as he had a gift for financial record & transaction analysis, along with understanding complex software programs & operating systems; 2) he never got used to flying around in an Erickson S-64 Air Crane Helicopters; and (3) he was instrumental in transforming the Ventura Port District waterfront marina into a place to dine, shop and stay (venturaharbor.com).
A lifelong learner and teacher Roger became a CPA in Los Angeles, California, began graduate coursework at Eastern New Mexico University for a Master of Business Administration, overcame his fear of public speaking by succeeding with Toastmasters International, taught business law & international banking at Albuquerque Tech Vocational Institute, and became an Accredited Residential Manager & Certified Property Manager via the Institute of Real Estate Management. The list goes on.
Roger & Joann lived in Albuquerque, New Mexico, then Ojai, California, and later moved back to New Mexico where they built an amazing Southwest-style house outside of Sandia Park. They were able to enjoy the mountain views and wildlife for many years before moving to Parkdale, Oregon to take care of his aging parents. They spent 43 happy years together. He was Joann’s caregiver through several successful cancer battles until dementia complications claimed her life on December 19, 2016.
He loved sports and sports statistics of all kinds—especially basketball. His favorite college team was Gonzaga. He played basketball his whole adult life- admitting he wasn’t necessarily a good player but he loved the game and gave his best. He enjoyed running, weightlifting, bowling, golf, a wide range of western movies, crossword puzzles, forensic TV mysteries, U.S. history & world events, listening to music, attending music concerts and was a fan of comic strips, standup comedy and laughing at life in general.
He adored his cats and made sure the outdoor community cats were taken care of too. He and his beloved Joann appreciated the outdoors and took many trips into the Southwest wilderness exploring ghost and mining towns, Native American cliff dwellings and historic Route 66. They did everything from touring the enduring mansions of New Orleans to staying a week on the Queen Mary in San Francisco. They hosted at the 50th Anniversary of the U.S. Forest Services’ Smokey Bear at Albuquerque’s Hot Air Balloon Festival.
Roger is survived by his daughter Michelle Osborne of Mount Hood Parkdale, OR, son Pierre Osborne of Portland, OR, son Jacques Osborne of Portland, OR, son Vincent Saiz of Albuquerque, NM, daughter Rebecca Maestas of Aztec, NM; grandson Roger A. Osborne of Mount Hood Parkdale, Oregon and many lovely grandchildren and great-grandchildren living in the beautiful Southwest.

Obituary: Thomas James Griswold, The Dalles
Obituary: Thomas James Griswold, The Dalles
Thomas James Griswold
Thomas James Griswold, a devoted family man and an avid outdoorsman, passed away July 5, 2022, in the Oregon Veterans Home in The Dalles. He was surrounded by family at the time of his death and was calmed by the sound of traditional hymns and by the touch of his loved ones. Tom was fighting bladder cancer, likely caused by Agent Orange exposure during the Vietnam War.
Tom Griswold was born on April 5, 1943, in Red Bluff, CA. Tom was the third child and the oldest boy born to Clarence and Jean Griswold. Tom’s love of the outdoors and ability to work with machinery was instilled at a young age when the family moved around with his father’s work, either shearing sheep or working as a predator control agent. This gave young Tom hours to run through the woods, learning to hunt and fish, or fixing up homes and equipment.
These early experiences influenced Tom and helped create the man he was for his adult life. After graduating from school in 1961, Tom joined the US Navy and was involved with the Bay of Pigs and the Vietnam War.
While in the Navy, Tom was trained as a machinist, which was his primary employment for the rest of his life; to say that Tom enjoyed fixing or redesigning things would be an understatement. Tom worked as a machinist for The Corps of Engineers at Bonneville Dam until his retirement. After retirement, Tom spent most of his time enjoying his family and the acreage. He was passionate about building his home, redesigning equipment for the home, or hunting or fishing with family. There was never an outdoor event that Tom turned down, even filling his depredation tag with a cow elk this March with the help of his sons.
His laugh was contagious; his energy was beyond his years, and his hugs were deep and filled with love, his stories …. endless. He will be missed not only at home but out at hunting camp around the fire or at fishing camp at dusk when the stories rang out and made us all laugh, even if we’d heard the same story once or twice. We knew the ending, Tom was always the hero, and we wouldn’t have it any other way.
Tom is survived by his wife of 56 years, Linda Griswold. He is also survived by three children, Susan Bull, Jim, and Keith Griswold, one son-in-law, Jerry Bull, and two daughters-in-law, Evie and Julie Griswold, who teased Tom endlessly about which was the favorite. The children blessed him with nine grandchildren, Dakota, Hunter, Shannon and Dustin Whitmire, Madison, Emmalie, and Nate Griswold, as well as Aaron and Jonah Griswold, and one great-grandchild Raylee Thomas Bull, which were truly the love of his life. Tom’s siblings, Betty Garlock, Barbara Wegner and Tim Griswold were very important to him.
He was called Opa not only by the grandchildren but by many other children who were lucky enough to spend time with Tom. Tom was preceded in death by his parents and his son-in-law Wayne Whitmire. Tom loved his family, his country and his Lord. “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” John 3:16
Tom’s funeral will be held on Saturday, July 16 at noon, at Bethany Lutheran Church at 2323 E. 12th St, The Dalles, where Tom was an active member, serving as bookkeeper and trustee for many years.
In place of flowers, pleased donate to your favorite charity or Hope Medical Clinic 3206 W. 6th The Dalles, Or., 97058
The family thanks the Brisrol Hospice of The Gorge and Oregon Vetran’s Home for the kind and compassionate care during Tom’s Last weeks.
