Obituary: Peter Joseph Macnab, The Dalles

Peter Joseph Macnab

“Can’t complain, no one will listen to me.” Or “If you can’t have a good day, there's no reason to have one at all.” “He always said he outlived his siblings because he did all the work, and they did all the playing, and nobody was left to dispute it”.

These were famous phrases Pete said often.

Tuesday morning, Sept 6th, 2022, Peter Joseph Macnab reached his arms out to heaven and left his earthly home and joined his Heavenly Father with peace on his face and love in his heart at the Springs Memory Care in The Dalles, Oregon in the early morning hours.

Pete was 101 and will be remembered for his witty humor, love for sweets, button-up shirts, khaki jeans and always his Seabees hat on his head. Most importantly was his devout Catholic faith that never wavered in his life.

Pete was born on July 9, 1921, in The Dalles, Oregon to Alexander and Helen Bee Macnab. Pete was the 9th out of 13 children. Pete spoke often about his mother for she was at the forefront of his memories and his devotion and love for her was immeasurable. Pete was a long-time resident of Sherman County until he moved to The Dalles Assisted Living at the age of 99.

At a very young age, Pete was out working the wheat fields with his dad and brothers. Mind you this was a team of 40 horses pulling a combine. Graduating as the valedictorian from Rufus School in 1938 he ventured off to OCE in Monmouth, Oregon to study Education. Peter aspired to become a teacher and coach. 

During the second year of his college career, Pete enlisted in the United States Naval Construction Battalion known as the Seabees during WWII after the attack on Pearl Harbor. He was on his way to basic training in July 1942 when the train stopped in Chicago. It was Pete's 21st birthday and he was terribly disappointed he couldn't get off to have a beer!  Pete served his country for 37 months overseas on the Ellice Islands of Subic Bay.

 December 1945, after serving his country he moved back and started working for the county road department building the infrastructure we see today. It wasn't long before he married Janet Kaseberg in October 1946 and was married for 51 years before her passing in 1997.  Peter started working with his brother-in-law Paulen Kaseberg on the ranch and his life as a wheat farmer began. He worked in the wheat field until 1983 when it was time to pass on the tradition to his sons.

The Macnabs had many family traditions. After harvest, they would head to the Oregon coast or get together with other families and cousins for card night, great food, and lots of laughter. Pete was involved in the Elks Club, American Legion and was President of Macnab Inc. 

Peter and Janet had six children: Loren, Richard, Craig, Peter, Joy and James. Thirteen grandchildren and nineteen great-grandchildren. 

Peter was preceded in death by his wife Janet Kaseberg Macnab, their three sons Peter, Loren and Richard, his parents, and his twelve siblings.

 Rosary will be held at Spencer and Libby's Funeral home Chapel at 6:30 p.m. with a viewing starting at 2:00 p.m. on September 22nd, 2022.

 Services will be held at St. Peter's Catholic Church in The Dalles, Oregon on Sept. 23rd at 10:30 am. followed with a graveside burial. A luncheon will follow in the parish hall.

 Arrangements are being handled by Spencer, Libby, and Powell Funeral Home.

Obituary: Floyd Franklin Branson III, Hood River

Floyd Franklin Branson III was taken home to Heaven on September 1st, 2022 following a long battle with heart disease.  

Floyd was born on December 25th, 1947 in Miami Ok. to Floyd Jr., and Marcellia (Spicer) Branson. The family moved to Hood River in 1954 where he spent most of his 74 years.  

A United States Army Veteran who served in both Vietnam and Germany, Floyd received his honorable discharge in August of 1970. He attended college at Mt. Hood Community College, and Oregon State University, and spent a distinguished 29-year career as a warehouseman, and then a Service Technician at Sprint- retiring in 2005 following his first stroke.  

Floyd was a member of the Seneca-Cayuga Tribe of Oklahoma. He enjoyed tennis, bowling, hunting, fishing, and rooting for the New York Yankees and the Green Bay Packers. He was also a frequent patron of casinos. Floyd had a passion for his family and loved deeply. He was quick with a joke or to make you laugh. He was friendly, always ready with a handshake or a hug, optimistic, and supportive. His voice and his smile brought great joy and comfort to all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Floyd “Bud” leaves behind his beloved wife of almost 30 years, Laurie, a sister Elizabeth, four children: Janelle, Rene’, Sean, and Jonathan, 13 grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren.

Obituary: Adeline Marie (Syrstad) Schull, Hood River

Adeline Marie (Syrstad) Schull was born May 25, 1929, on the family farm near Revillo, South Dakota, to Melvin & Esther (Nordquist) Syrstad.  She passed away peacefully in her sleep in her home on August 27, 2022 

Adeline married the love of her life, Harold Schull, on January 24, 1948.  They shared 63 years together before Harold’s passing on September 18, 2011.  They wanted to get away from the cold South Dakota winters and, with $50 in their pocket, moved to The Dalles, Oregon in the summer of 1952 where Harold got a job working construction on The Dalles Dam. 

Hello, World!

Harold & Adeline were great business partners.  Harold handled the construction aspect of the partnership and Adeline handled the bookkeeping and money!  They move the family to Hood River in 1960 when Harold built Orchard Lanes Bowling Alley and various other enterprises.  They retired from the bowling alley in 1977 and spent many happy winters traveling and wintering in the Palm Springs area. 

Adeline is now reunited with her beloved husband, Harold, her parents, and siblings; Evelyn, Pearl, Joyce, Norbert, Betty, Donna, Beverly, Louise and Shirley … enjoying lots of potlucks and dancing the night away. 

Adeline is survived by her children, Linda (David) Campbell, Doug Schull, Randy (Cate) Schull, Janell (Tim) Wingerd, nine grandchildren, fifteen great-grandchildren and sister, Sharon. 

Graveside Services are planned for 1:00 p.m., Wednesday, September 7th, 2022 at Idlewilde Cemetery (970 Tucker Road, Hood River, Oregon).  Celebrant Speaker and friend, Bob Huskey will officiate.  Celebration of Life is to follow at her daughter, Janell’s residence. 

Remembrances may be made to Hospice of the Gorge or a charity of your choice.
