Obituary: Jim Kosglow, Hood River
Obituary: Jim Kosglow, Hood River
Jim Kosglow died peacefully on the 5th of July in Hood River, OR. His family grieves his loss but is grateful he is at peace after enduring Alzheimer's Disease and a recent cancer diagnosis.
He was born in Claridge, Pennsylvania to Rudy and Jenny Kosglow in 1938. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Bill, and first daughter, Lisa Doll.
57 years ago, Jim married Janice Doll. He is survived by Jan and his three daughters, sons-in-inlaw and grandchildren; Mia and Jeff Trujillo (Gabby and Sofia), Lisa Kosglow and Jeff Greenwood (Emilia), and Kristin Kosglow and Dave Haglund (Ronin and Rhys). While Boise, Idaho was home base for 35 years, they also lived in Colorado, Oregon, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania and New York. After the family moved west, he enjoyed skiing, hiking, camping and walking along the Boise River.
He was an outstanding student and although his father died just before high school graduation, Jim completed college on a full scholarship. He continued with a law degree and MBA- all on full academic scholarship. Jim believed career opportunities resulted from how he leveraged his education into international business. His extensive travels enabled him to visit over 100 countries.
He and Jan opened their home to a foster child, an exchange student, German cousins, traveling artists, and friends needing a place to stay for a few months or years, and they always had room for teammates of their girls. They were confirmed Unitarian Universalists and raised their family with values they embraced as UU’s. As they moved to different cities and looked to build their community, the first call they made was to the local congregation.
Classical music was the soundtrack of Jim’s life and music was always playing in the home. He was an accomplished clarinetist in his youth. As an adult, he became more knowledgeable in classical music by taking classes in retirement. He was a board member of the Boise Chamber Music Society, hosted artists from the Idaho Shakespeare Festival and loved visits to the Aspen Summer Music Festival.
Jim saved his greatest affection for his family. He will be remembered as a devoted father, grandfather and husband. He easily welcomed others into his home and around the dinner table. His endless lines of questioning will be missed by all who survived a dinnertime interrogation.

Obituary: Carmeletta Jo Blanchard, 86, The Dalles
Obituary: Carmeletta Jo Blanchard, 86, The Dalles
Carmeletta Jo Blanchard (Jo) passed away at her home in The Dalles, Oregon, on July 9, 2023, surrounded by her loving family. Her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, other family, and friends had the chance to visit her over the past few weeks to love on her and say goodbye. Her family and friends will miss her but know that she is with her Lord in Heaven where she is happy and at peace.
Jo was born on May 17, 1937, in Tacoma, Washington, to Robert Marshall Simpson and Mabel Agnes (Eggman) Simpson. She was the firstborn of three children with a sister, Marsha Simpson, and a brother, Robert Simpson, Jr., born later.
When she was young, her family moved frequently between Tacoma, Washington, and various cities in California where they had family. Her father loved to travel and thought nothing of taking off on a Friday evening from Northern California to drive to Tacoma, Washington, and then drive home to be back at work on Monday morning. Eventually, they settled in Mosier, Oregon, where Jo met the love of her life, Dwaine Blanchard. Jo and Dwaine married on August 25, 1956, in Mosier, Oregon, and soon began their family.
After they were married, Dwaine, a recent Air Force veteran, went to airplane mechanics school in Eugene, Oregon. Once he finished, they moved to Kent, Washington, where Dwaine worked for Boeing. After a few years, Dwaine changed careers to become a journeyman electrician. They eventually settled in Mosier and Jo spent most of her life raising her children and making a warm, welcoming home for their family there. Jo and Dwaine had three children and then in 1976, her sister passed away and four of her six children came to live with them. Jo and Dwaine opened their home to various family and friends whenever there was a need.
Jo loved her family selflessly and gave of her time freely as a Sunday school and vacation bible school teacher, room mom, and Girl Scout leader, and supported Dwaine and her boys with their Boy Scout commitments.
Jo’s main focus was her family and she worked only occasional temporary jobs outside the home until most of her children were grown. However, she had an entrepreneurial spirit and started several successful small businesses on her own. When her children were very young, she had a custom cake decorating business and made special-order wedding and party cakes. For several years she maintained a wholesale egg business buying and selling eggs from common and rare fowl to customers throughout the world. In the 1980s, she started her own business, Kalidacrafts, making and selling hand-crafted vinegar blends, crafts, egg creations, jewelry, and more at craft fairs and through individual mail orders all over Oregon and Washington. For several years she was the Mosier Avon Lady.
She had the soul of an artist and loved to paint, craft, and create. She was a voracious reader and knowledgeable about many topics.
Jo eventually began volunteering to tutor college students. At age 57 she started college to get a certificate as a Paraprofessional Education Assistant from Portland Community College in The Dalles, Oregon, to help her be a better tutor.
She inherited her father’s love of travel and loved nothing more than to take long trips anywhere, anytime, especially to the Oregon coast. Her youngest son lives in Fairbanks, Alaska, and she was always ready to travel there for any reason. She loved exploring new places, finding just the right souvenir for everyone on her list, and spending quality time with family sharing her travel experiences.
Jo loved animals and for most of her life had cats and dogs as pets. Over the years she also had chickens, ducks, geese, guinea hens, rabbits, goats, turkeys, a pony, and many other stray animals brought home by her children.
She was a long-time member of the Sovereign Grace Baptist Church she attended with Dwaine.
Jo is survived by her husband, Dwaine, her children Timber Chinn (husband Allan), Del Blanchard (wife Irene), Arny Blanchard (wife Leila), and their “adopted” daughter, niece Brynnie Simpson (husband Greg). She is also survived by her brother, Robert Simpson Jr. Jo has 10 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren, 2 nieces, and 3 nephews. She is predeceased by her parents and sister.
Jo was a selfless, giving, God-loving woman who will be sorely missed by all who knew her.
There will be a celebration of life service for Jo at Sovereign Grace Baptist Church on August 19, 2023, at 2:00 p.m. for family and friends.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the church may be sent to 1103 Sunflower Street W., The Dalles, Oregon 97058.

Obituary: Cynthia Adele Collins, Hood River Valley
Obituary: Cynthia Adele Collins, Hood River Valley
Cynthia Adele Collins died peacefully at home during the predawn hours of July 3, 2023. A full moon was shining brightly above her rustic farmhouse in the middle section of the Hood River Valley, and Cindy adored full moons. Surrounding her home in the moonlight were her carefully tended gardens and her orchard where she grew cherries and pears.
Cindy’s path to becoming a successful orchardist was multidimensional, much like Cindy herself. She was born in San Francisco on November 11, 1959, the first child of Bruce and Adele Collins, and spent her early childhood years with her family in nearby Mill Valley. In 1968 they relocated to Fircrest and then to Lakewood near the southern end of Washington’s Puget Sound. The family passion was alpine skiing, and from November through April they spent nearly every weekend at their small cabin that afforded ready access to White Pass Ski Area. There Cindy and her three younger brothers became expert skiers and ski racers. Cindy’s favorite race was the downhill, the event that involved the greatest speed and risk.
But there was much more to Cindy than the courage to go for broke. She was a straight-A student who also developed great skill in arts and crafts, sewing, knitting, and cooking. In 1982 she graduated from the University of Washington with a double major in computer science and business and then moved to Portland to work as a software engineer at Tektronix, Inc. and subsequently at Intel Corporation. By 1987 her expertise had advanced so much that she was invited to join a small start-up company, Multiflow, in Connecticut. There she helped develop innovative software architectures that boosted the speed of information processing by large computers. Later she sometimes joked that, surrounded by Ph.D.’s, she needed to explain to them how some aspects of their software really worked. In 1990 Cindy moved back to Portland, where she did another brief stint at Intel and then joined a new start-up company, Equator, to continue her work on software development and serve as a consultant to Fujitsu in Japan.
Few career transitions could be more dramatic than the one Cindy made in 1996 when, as she put it, “I bought the farm.” But Cindy had a vision of a rural lifestyle in Hood River County, and when she set her sights on a goal, she wasn’t easily deterred. She gradually mastered the art of fruit farming, and her curiosity and fearless approach to problem solving allowed her to tackle the technical complexities of farm machinery and infrastructure. Cindy simultaneously found time to restore her old farmhouse and classic barn, and she planted gardens everywhere that transformed her property into what felt like heaven on Earth. She took a leadership role in the Central Gorge Master Gardeners and was elected to the Board of Directors of the Hood River Soil and Water Conservation District, where she served from 2008 until 2020.
And Cindy kept skiing right up through January 2023, even as the cancer she’d coped with so gracefully for more than 13 years began to overtake her. Her family and friends will miss her deeply in many ways, but perhaps most of all we will miss her calm, warm, and gentle manner that belied the heart of a lioness that lay within.
Cindy is survived by her three brothers and nine nieces and nephews: Ross Collins of Truckee, CA (spouse Renee, children: Shane, Leigh, and Graham); Drew Collins of Encinitas, CA (spouse Stephanie, children: Max, Luca, and Enzo); and Neil Collins of Mill Valley, CA (partner Annie, children: Gibson, Wendy, and Maude, who’s taken over operation of Cindy’s farm). Also important in Cindy’s life were her two black Labrador retrievers, Arthur and Beau, and her longtime partner, Richard (Dick) Iverson of Hood River.
Donations in Cindy’s memory may be sent to Central Gorge Master Gardener Association, 2990 Experiment Station Drive, Hood River, OR 97031.
No formal funeral is planned. Cremation was performed at Anderson's Tribute Center, Hood River (phone 541-386-1000).

Bob Wojtecki was born in Chicago, IL to Paul and Rose Wojtecki. Bob attended St Mary of Perpetual Help Catholic School and graduated from there. He joined the Air Force straight out of high school and was sent to basic training at Lackland Air Base in San Antonio, TX. He then was stationed at Portland Air Base as a jet mechanic. He met and married Bobbie Anderson while stationed there. They began their family in Portland where both of their children were born. In 1969 they returned to Bob’s hometown of Chicago where he worked as a freight dock hand and lived there for 11 years. In 1980 they returned to Oregon and made The Dalles their new home. Bob started working for Bernert Barge Lines but it did not take long for him to realize that was not the job for him and moved to the Martin Marietta Goldendale Aluminum Plant. When the plant closed down he then moved on to work for Sprint and worked there until his retirement at age 62.
He was proud of the many community activities he participated in. In Chicago he served on the School Board for Sacred Heart Catholic School, including a time serving as the President. He assisted as a coach for Little League. He was a self appointed leader of the neighborhood "Sandlot Rec League" activities (hockey, baseball, football, etc.). Bob was a member of the Knights of Columbus and served as President for a time. He was a self-appointed sidewalk snow-thrower of his short street where he would make sure all his neighbors' sidewalks were cleaned off. He led adult catechesis and faith classes.
