Obituary: Nathan “Nate” Lain, 67, Hood River

Obituary: Nathan “Nate” Lain, 67, Hood River

It is with great sadness that the family of Nathan “Nate” Lain announces his peaceful passing on April 16, 2025, at the age of sixty-seven.

Nate was the firstborn and only son of Jack and Pat Lain. His birthplace, Naval Air Weapons Station China Lake, CA, was the first naval air station of many to which the Navy would move the family. He started kindergarten at NAS Alameda, CA, and graduated three moves later from Oak Harbor High School, near NAS Whidbey Island, WA. Throughout school, he excelled in music as a percussionist in both the high school concert and stage bands as well as being the lead baritone in both the concert and the elite madrigal choirs.

Nate loved cars and motorcycles. His first full-time job was pumping gas at a Chevron Station in Oak Harbor, where the on-site mechanic took him under his wing and started him on his path to being an auto mechanic. He continued this career path in California, a brief stint in Texas, and then back to California, where he met and married his wife, Sandi (and her 7-year-old son, Tommy) on November 25, 1978.

His family moved to Hood River in 1985, and Nate worked at Owen’s Chevrolet and a couple of other small shops, eventually ending up at Cumming’s Auto and Repair Service (C.A.R.S.). He made a career change in 2007, working as a Weed & Pest Control Tech for the county for three years before transferring to be the County Building Maintenance Tech. Nate retired June 30, 2022.

Nate enjoyed hunting (rifle and bow) and was a long-time member of the AppleKnocker Bowmen Archery club. He participated in the HR County Golf league, the HR County Bowling league and rode motorcycles, always motorcycles! He loved Harleys best. He and Sandi also volunteered for the OSP (Oregon State Police) Fish and Wildlife division, helping on the river, in the forests, and in the community.

Nate and Sandi shared an active life—RV camping, lots of wine tasting, and cruising the western part of the country on their bike/trike. In recent years, they spent quality time with their Harley family--the Triple D’s (Dan’s Darling Ducklings).

Nate leaves his wife, Sandi Lain (nee Stanphill); his son, Tom Moss; his granddaughter, and her husband, Emily and Emanuel Provost; his four great-grandchildren, Breauna, Laila, Elle, and Finley; his sister, Lori Lain; his sister and her spouse, Jackie and Tom Whieldon; his niece, Cassie Whieldon; his niece and her husband, Lana and Alex Clark, and his great-niece, Emmy.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Jack Lain and Pat Lain (nee Amer); his mother, Jane Stanphill (nee Griffith), and father-in-law, Stewart Stanphill; and his brother-in-law, Stewart Stanphill, Jr.

The funeral service will be held Saturday, April 26th, from 11:00 am - 12:30 pm at Anderson’s Tribute Center (1401 Belmont Avenue, Hood River, OR), followed by an outdoor celebration of Nathan’s life at Stave & Stone Winery (3827 Fletcher Dr, Hood River, OR) from 1-3 pm.

Memorial contributions in Nate’s name can be made to the Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease (CJD) Foundation, Inc. (https://cjdfoundation.org/) or the American Cancer Society ( https://cjdfoundation.org/ ).

Obituary: Kenneth Dale Huskey, 74, Mosier

Ken’s hobbies included playing his guitar, fiddle and banjo. He loved hunting, fishing and camping. Ken didn’t need to harvest anything to have fun as long as he was out with family enjoying the many memories he made along the way. A drive through the back hills always had a story about killing a deer with somebody over there, and over there, and over there. He would often follow up with, “That one might have been legal!

Kenneth Dale Huskey of Mosier, Oregon, passed away at the age of 74 on April 21, 2025. Kenneth was born on June 10, 1950 in The Dalles, Oregon. He was the youngest in the family from the marriage of John and Mabel Huskey raised in the hills of Mosier, Oregon. Due to a large family he grew up with his siblings children. Uncle Kenny was the same age as most of his numerous niece and nephews.

He completed his two year degree at Mt. Hood Community College. Ken married Wendy in 1973 and lived on Huskey hill. They started a family in 1975 when Patrick was born. The family moved to Carson, WA and Dale came along in 1978. The family returned to Mosier in 1987. Ken would continue his education and earn many certificates related to his career with the US Forest Service.

Most of Ken’s working career was with the United State Forest Service as a Civil Engineer. He made many memories and numerous lifelong friends in his career. He worked on the Hood River National Forest and the Gifford Pinchot National Forest for 42+ years.

During his career he served on fire crews, road design, timber sales and many projects throughout both forests. One of his largest projects toward the end of his career was designing and overseeing the Hwy 35/Mt. Hood Meadows interchange project.

Ken’s hobbies included playing his guitar, fiddle and banjo. He loved hunting, fishing and camping. None of which was ever by himself. Ken always hunted with family, mostly his two son’s and grandkids. Ken didn’t need to harvest anything to have fun as long as he was out with family enjoying the many memories he made along the way. A drive through any of the back hills always had a story about killing a deer with somebody over there, and over there, and over there. He would often follow up with, “That one might have been legal!”

Ken was awarded an American Legion School Award. This award was earned for Courage, Honor, Leadership, and Patriotism. Friends and family would vouch for every single value from that award through out his life. Ken had a keen sense of humor and wit. You always new it was coming by the trademark grin that preceded the delivery. Ken enjoyed good whiskey, bourbon and a cigar by a campfire any day or night.

Survived by his bride of 52 years Wendy Huskey (Reed). His favorite first born son Patrick, wife Sonya, grandson Tyler. His favorite second born son Dale, wife Wendy (Jr.), granddaughter’s Irelyn and Skylar, grandson’s Dallas and Kadin, great granddaughter Blake and grand dog Theo.

Ken is also survived by his brother Jack (Betty), Sisters Lorna and Lucille and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

Ken’s family would like to thank the many friends and family members who were a part of Ken’s life. Ken’s family would also like to thank a very large medical care family who provided care to Ken over the years. Ken lived a long and blessed life due to his care and the love of family and friends.
