Obituary: Barbara Anne Bilyeu, 96, The Dalles

Barbara Anne Bilyeu was born on September 21, 1931, to her mother, Hazel Jean Martin, and her father, Leon Eugene Martin Sr. She had one brother, Leon Eugene Martin Jr. (Bud).

She graduated from The Dalles High School and Clackamas Community College.

Barbara is survived by her five children and their spouses, numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, and nieces and nephews.

Barbara had several different jobs in her life, but what she loved the most was being a mom and grandma, not just her own, but to any child that entered her home. She loved kids, and they loved her.

Barbara loved to garden; her yard and flowers were always beautiful and vibrant. It was a true passion of hers to grow things. She was known for her homemade jams. Her grandchildren loved to help her; it was a special thing for them all. Barbara was a woman of faith, and her favorite Bible story was David and Goliath.

Barbara lived in many places during her lifetime. The Dalles was always a place she loved; it was her hometown. She was born in The Dalles and chose to go back and spend her final time there.

Barbara’s service will be held at Spencer, Libby, and Powell Funeral Home on April 18, 2026, at 11 a.m.

Obituary: Ralph George Spring, 86, White Salmon

Ralph George Spring, 86, of White Salmon, Washington, passed away peacefully on March 18, 2026, surrounded by his family and loved ones.

Ralph was born on October 14, 1939, in Quincy, Adams, Iowa, to Glyde Arthur & Valma Neta Spring. A few years later, they moved to the White Salmon and Bingen area.  Ralph went to school in the White Salmon area.  Ralph met the love of his life, Janice, in 1958.  On August 16 of that year, they got married. Ralph worked at the Railroad for quite a few years; he also worked at the mill in Bingen before starting his own business in 1969, doing plumbing, concrete work, and hanging garage doors. Ralph was in business for 50 years. 

Ralph was known for his kindness, being a hard worker, love, and dedication to his family.  He had a very passionate love for Western shows and movies. I think Dad truly wished he were a cowboy. One of Janice and Ralph's pastimes was going to the coast and watching the tides come in. They also had a love for the outdoors and Huckleberry picking. 

He is survived by his three kids, Robert, Ruth, & Karen, and his brother James.  He is also survived by his 10 grandkids, Dustin, Crystal, Ashley, Nichole, Melissa, Christian, Cheyenne, Christopher, Carsten, and Camille. He is survived by is great grandkids, Blayke, Brooklynn, Ryan, Cruz, Kiba, Piper, Hunter, Whitney, Grayson, Kiah, Cameron, and soon to be Lucas.   He was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers, Arther, Shorty (Nickname), his wife Janice, and his son Glenn.

 Celebration of Life will be on May 23, 2026, at 1:00 pm at Gardner Funeral Home.

Obituary: Gloria L. Miller, 83, Hood River

Gloria L. Miller of Hood River, Oregon, passed away at home on Wednesday, March 18th, 2026 in the presence of her family.

Gloria was born on November 19th, 1943 in Ravenna, Nebraska to Harry and Naomi Lorenz-Sorensen Miller and was the 2nd of 4 children born in Ravenna. In 1953, the family moved to Anaheim, California, where Gloria attended school and graduated from Anaheim High School in 1962. Gloria worked as a CNA in Anaheim and Santa Ana, California until moving with her Mom and Step-Father to Hood River, Oregon in 1987 where she continued working as a CNA. In the 1990's, she began working for the Hood River School District for the Food Service Program.

Gloria enjoyed crocheting, coloring, reading, word search puzzles and sewing. She enjoyed spending time with her family and attending church services with her sister at St Mark's Episcopal Church of Hood River.

Gloria is survived by her sister, Catherine, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her father in 1968, step-father in 2001, brother Robert in 2007, mother in 2013 and sister, Mary just in 2025 and a few days before Gloria's passing, her precious dog of 12 years, Harmony also passed.

A service will be held at a later date in May, 2026 at St Mark's Episcopal Church of Hood River, and any Memorial Donations may be made to St Mark's Episcopal Church of Hood River in the name of Gloria L.Miller.

Obituary: Jon Robert Rea, 80, The Dalles

Jon found joy in life’s simple pleasures. He loved music and spent many hours playing the guitar. He also cherished time with his beloved dog, Lena, who brought him comfort and companionship.

Jon Robert Rea, age 80, passed away peacefully on March 10, 2026. He was born on January 30, 1946, in Champaign, Illinois, to Robert and Roberta Rea, who preceded him in death.

Jon lived a full and hardworking life. After completing one year of college, he proudly served his country in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War. Following his service, he built a career working for the City of The Dalles Water Department, where he was known for his dedication and reliability.

Jon found joy in life’s simple pleasures. He loved music and spent many hours playing the guitar. He also cherished time with his beloved dog, Lena, who brought him comfort and companionship.

He is survived by his loving wife, Lanora Rea, and his children: Loren Rea; Ian Rea of Arizona; Sabrina Poole; Rodger Poole; and Shawna Watson of Oregon. He was a proud grandfather to Nyiah Prante, Jaden Prante, Samantha Rea, Vanity Poole, Sierra Anderson, Shaynie Watson and Staley Poole. He is also survived by his sister, Judy Widick.

Jon will be remembered for his quiet strength, his service to his country and community, and his love for his family. His presence will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

Obituary: Merle Edwin Phillips, 77, The Dalles

In Loving Memory of Merle Edwin Phillips Jr. (“Bill”)

October 19, 1948 – March 24, 2026

Merle Edwin Phillips Jr., lovingly known as “Bill” to his friends and family, passed away on March 24, 2026, at the age of 77.

Merle was born on October 19, 1948, in Stark, Kansas, to Merle Edwin Phillips Sr. and Ester Phillips, both of whom preceded him in death. As a young boy, he moved with his family to Oregon, where he would spend the majority of his life. His time away was only during his honorable service in the United States Marine Corps, where he proudly served his country.

Merle pursued some college coursework and went on to build a respected career as a skilled millwright. Over the years, he worked at DEE Lumbermill, SDS Lumbermill in Bingen, Washington, and Oregon Cherry Growers in The Dalles, Oregon. He was known for his strong work ethic and dedication to his craft.

A man who deeply loved the outdoors, Merle found joy in fishing and hunting. He cherished the friendships he built with those who shared his passion, and he took great pride in the close circle of friends he maintained throughout his life. He also gave back to his community by volunteering for several years with the Gleaners Food Bank in The Dalles.

Merle was married three times, most recently to his beloved wife, Caroline Phillips. Together, they shared 33 years of life in The Dalles and raised their daughter, Morgan Phillips. He is also survived by his children from a previous marriage: Mike, Michelle, and Marci.

In addition to his wife and children, Merle is survived by his siblings: Roger Phillips, Bruce Phillips, Linda Phillips, Elton Graves, Ellen.

Merle will be remembered for his strength, loyalty, love of family, and deep appreciation for the outdoors. He leaves behind a legacy of hard work, service, and lasting friendships.

A viewing will be held on Friday, April 10, from 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Spencer, Libby and Powell Funeral Home.

A graveside service will take place on Saturday, April 11th at 12:00 p.m. at Odd Fellows Cemetery off of Cherry Heights, The Dalles, Oregon.

Merle will be dearly missed and forever remembered by all who knew and loved him.

Obituary: Angeline Janet Setters, 92, The Dalles

Angeline Setters passed away peacefully in her sleep at The Dalles veterans’ home on March 18, 2026. She was born in Musselshell County in the city of Roundup Montana on August 11, 1933, to the parents of Kenneth and Caroline Strang. She was the eldest child followed by her sister, Julie Huffman, and Richard Strang.

Hello, World!

Her family moved to the Portland Oregon area when she was very young as her father moved into the area and worked as a steam engineer. Angie was a very devoted Christian lady and at the age of 20 she went to the national workers training program and was certified to teach Sunday School.

As she got older and started to work, she had a roommate. Angie explained to us later that there were no minister available in Roseburg Oregon, where they resided because it was St. Patrick’s Day, so they found a minister in Washington State and the Reverend Howard C Cole married them.

Angie and her spouse wasted no time and started a family. Richard setters was the first born, following with Janice setters, Carol Setters, and Robin Setters. Angies husband Chester bought a small farm in Douglas County outside of Roseburg where Angie and her kids lived for a short time before moving to Troutdale, Oregon, where Chester got a job as a contractor building homes in Vancouver and Angie had the large responsibility of taking care of their children while he was at work.

Angies whole family were then facing life changing challenges due to the tragedy that happened on June 30, 1962, when Angie’s husband Chester was killed in a traffic accident. Angie never married and raised all her children on her own.

Angie had a very bad traffic accident in 1972. Her sister, Julie, had to come and stay with the children while she was recovering in the hospital. She came home later with a cast on both legs. She had lost her kneecaps and had therapy for quite some time to be able to walk normally again. In 1976 Angie and her children moved to Dufur Oregon, Dufur reminded Angie of her childhood memories in Montana. She then bought a restaurant right across the street from Dufur High School. She named the restaurant “Angie’s Place’ where all her children worked part time helping her out. Needless to say, it didn’t work out. Her and her children then moved to The Dalles Oregon, where most of them have lived since.

Angie worked in The Dalles at the salvation army where she was managing a apartment complex through Fadness Realty and worked at the Wasco County nursing home.

Angie’s sister, Julie Huffman, is the surviving member of her family. Angie had four children and seven grandchildren. She will be sorely missed; we know that she is with the lord now.

Obituary: Jacquellne "Jackie" Marie McKinstry (née Reld), 53, The Dalles

Jacquellne "Jackie" Marie McKinstry (née Reld), age 53, passed away on February 16, 2026, in The Dalles, Oregon. Born on October 10, 1972, in The Dalles, Jackie spent her life deeply rooted in the community she loved.

Jackie's faith was an integral part of her life. Her ministry studies with the Mustard Seed Ministry and Rivers of Grace Church were a source of Joy and Inspiration to her. She loved music and worship, often singing with a heart full of devotion. Her faith guided her as a faithful servant to God, a loving wife to Danlel McKinstry Jr., and a devoted mother to Andrew Beard.

Family was at the center of Jackie's world. She is survived by her husband, Daniel; her son, Andrew; her sisters, Anlta Penn-Porter and Tina Patton; her brother, Jim Reid; and her stepfather, Bob Haberman. Jackie also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, cousins, grandchildren, and friends who will forever cherish their memories with her. She was preceded in death by her mother, Dee Haberman, and father, Jack Reid.

Jackie had a passion for life that shone through in everything she did. She loved spending time with family and friends, cheering on the Seahawks, and sharing moments filled with laughter and love. Her warmth and loving spirit touched everyone she met, leaving an indelible mark on those fortunate enough to know her.

May Jackie's memory bring comfort to all who knew and loved her. A Memorial Service will be held on April 11, 2026, at 1:00 PM at Rivers of Grace Church, 1122 Oak Street. A dinner and fellowship time will follow the service. We gather not only to remember her life, but to rejoice in the hope we have in Christ. "Well done, good and faithful servant" - Mathew 25:23 "To be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord" - 2 Corinthians 5:8
