Judy Urness - Re Elect Eric Nisley - Letter to the Editor

I’ve had the pleasure of working for Wasco County District Attorney Eric Nisley, as the Victim Assistance Coordinator for the past 20 years. Eric is a very effective prosecutor, handling a caseload that includes homicides, felony assault, property, and drug crimes as well as the administration duties in the District Attorney’s Office. He holds offenders accountable, while supporting victim rights. Eric takes victims wishes into consideration and listens to frustrations that victims experience as a result of the crime and the criminal justice system.

In my role as the Victim Assistance Coordinator, I have seen how diligently Eric works to get restitution foEric works hard to get restitution for victims who have property destroyed or damaged as a result of a crime. In 2017 he implemented a Restitution Program where restitution payments are monitored, and follow up is done to encourage payments. If the follow up is done at the beginning of a person's probation they are more likely to successfully complete probation. This helps satisfy victims and also helps offenders successfully complete probation.

Eric has endorsements that include a long list of local law enforcement, attorneys and Crime Victims’ United. Crime Victims’ United was founded in 1983 and they have advocated for crime victims rights. As a result of their hard work, victims have rights of notification, right to speak at sentencing and notification of a defendant’s release. It is an honor for him to have this endorsement.

Matt Ellis is a defense attorney, and he advocates for offenders and he does a good job. Eric has been a prosecutor for over 20 years and knows the job. The roles of defense attorney and prosecutor are so different and Eric is a prosecutor and he knows the role of the district attorney.

Eric runs a cooperative office where input from staff is welcome, and staff opinions are valued. Eric has always supported his employees and the welfare of their families. He takes time to check in with staff creating an opportunity for dialogue. I’m fortunate to work for a district attorney with these qualities.

A strong character, patience and empathy are necessary attributes to be an effective district attorney and Eric has these qualities. Please join me in re-electing Eric Nisley as District Attorney.
