85 and older in TD? Free garbage service awaits; Garbage rates up slightly
The Dalles, Ore., Oct. 26, 2023- Customers of The Dalles Disposal can expect an average rate increase of 2.65 percent after The Dalles City Council approved the fee increase at its regular meeting on Oct. 24.
It’ll cost most a dime or a third of a cent per day.
The unanimous vote for the increase, which mirrors those increases at The Dalles Landfill, came after the city franchisee received praise from councilors as well as Rodger Nichols.
City residents with service to a 32-gallon can will see their rate increase 10 cents to $21.89 per month. This includes the Household Hazardous Waste surcharge of $1.40.
The rate increase starts Jan. 1st, 2024.
“In my observation, your company is well organized and your staff is courteous and helpful and involved in the community,” Councilor Tim McGlothlin told Jim Winterbottom, Disposal District Manager. “Whenever I call, you are there to assist.”
Councilor Darcy Long also thanked the company for providing transparency on how the company arrived at the increase, which is 85 percent of the consumer price index.
Reporter Rodger Nichols also praised the company.
“The quality of the company is first class,” Nichols said, noting collectors wave, smile, and are polite even in the worst weather.
Winterbottom, officially The Dalles Disposal District Manager at Waste Connections, Inc., thanked the council for their attention and also pointed out that residents who are 85 years old can receive free garbage service from the company.
It’s a simple process.
Simply go to the office, 1317 W. First St., The Dalles and fill out the paperwork. Those customers must supply the last four digits of their social security number. That’s it.
The fee for garbage service will then fall to zero for the following year. At that time, The Dalles disposal will send a renewal letter - residents just need to fill it out and return it to get another year of free service.
