Big Feelings Baby is a one-hour solo (ish) storytelling show written and performed by Ash Allen about finding your inner howl and the courage to let it out. Set in the Mississippi woods, the story follows a barefoot tomboy whose first companions are squirrels and her loud, feral grandmother who lives up the road. Their bond runs deeper than language, rooted in love bigger than the sky, humor, and a refusal to be tamed.

Joslyn & The Sweet Compression are bona fide, and they want the world to know it. A rising force out of Lexington, Kentucky, the band led by Joslyn Hampton comes out swinging on their sophomore album, ready to uplift and inspire through their singular and stirring soul-funk sound. 2019’s critically acclaimed debut album made them a favorite headliner at regional clubs and music festivals. Hampton pulls from her inspirations – Aretha Franklin, Chaka Khan, Whitney Houston, and Mariah Carey – as well as from the opera singers she studied in college. “I find myself applying all of the things I’ve learned to my passion now, and placing it in my music,” she shares. The result is a unique, hooky style that helps Joslyn & The Sweet Compression stand apart from their contemporaries. With I Hope We Can Still Be Friends, his debut for Saddle Creek, Dean Johnson makes a pact with the listener: He will sing you his truth in the most heartfelt and charming way possible, if you promise to keep an open mind. The title partly stems from the playful way the Seattle-based singer, songwriter and guitarist communes with his audiences at concerts. “I hope you’re not afraid to talk to me after the show,” he’ll say, sweetly, before launching into “Death of the Party,” the album’s seventh song. Centered on the “energy vampire” archetype — the exasperating windbag we’ve all encountered at some point — its lyrics are at once intellectually biting and unmistakably hilarious. His tender voice rings out like the ghost of Roy Orbison or a misfit Everly brother.
For more than a decade, Mama’s Broke, the Canadian duo of Amy Lou Keeler and Lisa Maria, have forged a style carried across landscapes rather than tied to one. Their forthcoming 12-song LP Reunion, out August 28 via Free Dirt Records and Forward Music Group, follows years in near-constant motion, bringing their folk-without-borders approach to small clubs, DIY spaces, and everywhere in between. Winners of the Canadian Folk Music Award for Ensemble of the Year for their 2017 debut Count the Wicked, their music is rooted in long days playing for passing crowds and traveling by foot, as well as in the deep wells of folk lineage they’ve tapped into across Eastern Canada, Appalachia, Ireland, and beyond. Their sound doesn’t belong to any one place so much as it passes through them, grounded in the traditions that shaped it.

Universally recognized as one of the most exciting singers remaining from the original soul era, 82 year-old Ural Thomas and his band The Pain just released their third LP "Dancing Dimensions." Thomas initially made his name in the 1960s with stone cold soul classic releases like "Pain Is The Name of Your Game," "Can You Dig It," "Deep Soul," and his 1964 recording debut with The Monterays "Push - Em Up." After a musical journey that commenced in his native Portland, Oregon, and led to Los Angeles, Cincinnati, and New York, sharing stages with everyone from James Brown to Stevie Wonder to Otis Redding to Etta James, Thomas became disillusioned with the music business and returned home to the city of roses at the end of the decade - where he continues to reign as Portland's uncontested Soul Brother Number One.
American singer/songwriter and musician from Anchorage, Alaska, currently living in Portland, Oregon. Ryan Sollee is known mainly as the mastermind of the Portland-based folk rock/alt-country band The Builders And The Butchers.
