A success story: Computer Club at The Dalles Library
By Nancy Turner
The Dalles, Ore., March 19, 2024 —The Dalles Library hosted the first meeting of the “Coffee and Computers with Kimball” on Wednesday, February 21st.
Several people showed up needing assistance with their computer problems. Other participants were able to help. This made it an enjoyable evening for all. This club is off to a great start.
The “Kimball” is Kimball Hawkins. Kimball loves coffee and he loves computers, anything to do with computers. He has over 35 years of professional experience in computers – from PCs to mainframes, from programming to System Administration. Kimball moved from Wallowa to The Dalles in 2022. He was particularly interested in getting involved with the community around computers. To make that happen, he started the Computer Club at the library. He loves solving computer problems and sharing experiences and advice about computers.
Kimball’s intentions for the Computer Club are that it becomes a place where all things computer-related can be discussed and played with. So far, the club has dealt with solving software problems. Kimball hopes that this will expand to include computer recommendations, computer hobbies, operating systems, building and repairing computers, career advice, and stories of the “good old days.”
The Dalles Library (722 Court Street, 541-296-2815), provides coffee and light refreshments for these meetings. The club meets on the third Wednesday of every month, at 6:00-7:00 p.m., in the upstairs MakerSpace. The next one is March 20th. There’s no charge and you don’t need to sign up for a course; just show up. All are invited to come and enjoy “Coffee and Computers with Kimball.”
