I Finished a Book!

To this day, I think there are two main reasons to read books. One reason is the happy feeling you get from starting a new book, and the other reason is the happy feeling you get when you finish one. That’s why I’m happy to announce that yesterday I finally finished the Hood River County Reads selection for 2024: “Beloved Beasts, Fighting for Life in the Age of Extinction.”

I’m not sure if anyone has editorialized on this yet, but “Beasts” has the distinction of being the first scientific book to be included in our local reading program - a tradition now 18 years old.

Based on the list of past books chosen for Hood River County Reads, I have to say that going into the book I was expecting to read something in one of the chapters to be in direct connection with the Columbia River Gorge, or specifically about the Pacific Northwest. But author Michelle Nijhuis takes us on an historical and worldwide journey of the development of protective conservation and environmental programs - programs that are in constant struggle with the human population and political institutions. Extremely detailed in every way, ‘Beasts’ is all at once a behind-the-scenes look and an overall view of the work in preventing extinction on our planet - and the story of the people who had forethought to put those protections in place. Nijhuis even incorporates the personal friendships and experiences with the people directly involved in trying to make those conservation programs work. Due to the scope of scientific information, the detail of the people involved, and the history of ecological philosophies of how humans can/should interact with their environment, this book is truly an outlier in terms of the past selections for Hood River County Reads. But it just may be one of the keys to learning about past mistakes to build a sustainable future.

Oppenheimer was Good, but Fat Man was Better?

We’re gonna delve into some more science here, it seems even the current movies are getting on board with the subject, doesn’t it? I’m glad that Oppenheimer won Best Picture - the list of past winners is so random in genre that it’s nice to see something with historical science fact come up to the front. But looming over the story of fascinating scientific achievement is unimaginable guilt and horror of creating the weapon. So interesting to learn about Oppenheimer as an individual, I thought the movie spent a little too much time on the government’s fanatical role of making sure the U.S. was not infiltrated by members of the Communist party. But on the other hand, a spy was found out even with all the security clearances that were made.

“Driving Miss Daisy” beat this film for Best Picture in 1989.

For a few years now, I had a vhs tape laying around of a movie called “Fat Man, Little Boy,” and when Oppenhiemer hit, I dug it out because the plot sounded like it was gonna be similar. Well, when I started watching the tape, it was so deteriorated that the tape kept dropping out every 15 seconds. So I ordered a disc and once the movie started, I was glued to the screen the whole time. Eerily similar! Paul Newman was a better General in charge, and I thought there was more focus on the science experiments, the physicists, and tragic lab mishaps at Los Alamos, not depicted in Oppenhimer. I kept the theme going with a watch of “Hiroshima,” a TV miniseries that told the story of the actual use and deployment of both weapons (one was called Fat Man, one was called Little Boy), from both U.S. and Japanese points of view. If there were three movies to watch to prevent history from repeating, these could be it.

Wednesday, June 26, Music & Magic in the Park 2024: featuring Paul Stierle's tribute to Bob Dylan.

Tonight's performer will be Paul Steirle, formerly of the New Christy Minstrels. He will play guitar and sing songs from Bob Dylan’s early years, 1962-1974. He will trace Dylan’s progress through folk music, protest songs, folk rock, rock ‘n’ roll, country rock, and Christian music.

Wednesday, July 10, Music & Magic in the Park 2024: featuring Portland Shishimai Kai

Tonight's event will feature Portland Shishimai Kai, with Eien Hunter-Ishikawa, performing the traditional Japanese Lion Dance. The actual performance is only 15 minutes; however, before that we'll learn about the Lion Dance, and there will be plenty of time for questions and answers.

Join Elizabeth Zimmerman at the Riverfront Trail at the Columbia Gorge Discovery Center for a plein air painting workshop on Sunday, June 23, 3-6 p.m. Bring your watercolor paint setup and learn from Elizabeth Zimmerman on location, who will give a brief demonstration of how she would approach her plein air watercolor painting, including explaining why she chooses her composition and what is the inspiration for that piece. She will demonstrate how she chooses what colors to mix and why she's choosing specific watercolor painting techniques. Then students will be encouraged to find their spots to work from on their own paintings. Elizabeth will walk from student to student to give one-on-one help and constructive feedback. The Columbia River: Wallula to the Sea at Maryhill Museum of Art

The Maryhill Museum of Art is presenting two lectures for its current exhibit "The Columbia River: Wallula to the Sea,” on Saturday, June 15. The talks take place from 2-4 p.m. in the M.J. Murdock Charitable Trust Educational Center, and the lectures are included with membership or general admission tickets.

About the event

Artist Erik Sandgren is one of the artists featured in the exhibition and he will present "Wallula to the Sea as Imagined, Observed and Remembered.” He will present works that illustrate necessary relationships between factual reportage and his more freely imagined depictions of the Columbia River. Where does truth lie? How does an artist arrive at the essential abstraction? In what ways does a pictorial ideal untether itself from pictorial fact? Should we paint what we know or what we see? What becomes of landscape without a single vantage point?

Historian Hobe Kytr has more than 40 years experience as a historian of the lower Columbia River. His presentation “Landscapes in Time: The Columbia River As It Was — Charting the River’s Past" focuses on the role of U.S. Coastal Survey engineer Cleveland Rockwell in documenting the Columbia River as it was before engineering improvements changed everything.

United Way benefit concert June 28

United Way of the Columbia Gorge presents a summer benefit concert and live auction on Friday, June 28, with Hell's Belles, the World Famous All-Female AC/DC Tribute Band, at Bargeway Pub in The Dalles. Doors open at 5:30 p.m., 21+ event. All proceeds benefit the United Way of the Columbia Gorge and supports 30 non-profits in the local Gorge community.

The Bingen Theater is bringing movies back! In between live theater, dance and music, we'll be bringing in occasional movies. We're kicking it off with the 40th anniversary re-release of what has been termed "The Greatest Concert Film of All Time. STOP MAKING SENSE: Newly restored in 4K to coincide with its 40th anniversary, the 1984 film was directed by renowned filmmaker Jonathan Demme and is considered by critics as the greatest concert film of all time. Stop Making Sense stars core band members David Byrne, Tina Weymouth, Chris Frantz, and Jerry Harrison along with Bernie Worrell, Alex Weir, Steve Scales, Lynn Mabry and Edna Holt. The live performance was shot over the course of three nights at Hollywood's Pantages Theater in December of 1983 and features Talking Heads' most memorable songs.

About the Concert

After a season that included music from England and Italy, the Gorge Sinfonietta returns to the United States for “Our American Home.” The concerts include some of the most beloved and iconic symphonic music from the golden age of American music.

From the 1920s through the 1950s, composers such as George Gershwin, Aaron Copland and Samuel Barber created the “American sound” in classical music. Melodic, bursting with emotion and energy, the music was as wide open as a prairie and as urban as New York City. Unlike some of the more avant garde music of the time, the American sound was easy to understand and direct in its expression.

Probably the most famous piece on the program is George Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue for piano and orchestra. One of the most recognizable, iconic American compositions of all time, Rhapsody in Blue is celebrating its 100th anniversary in 2024. It brings together the sound of symphonic music with the infectious syncopated rhythms of jazz. The Sinfonietta will be joined for Rhapsody in Blue by pianist/composer Mitchell Jett Spencer. Spencer thrilled audiences last season with his standing room-only performance of the Rachmaninov 2nd Piano Concerto.

Of course, American music continues to change and develop. Audiences will get to participate in that evolution firsthand, as the Sinfonietta presents the world premiere of Spirit of the Wind and Water, by Portland area composer Nicole Buetti. In addition to being a composer, Buetti is a virtuoso bassoonist and plays with the Sinfonietta. Spirit of the Wind and Water was inspired by watching kite boarders on the Columbia. It’s fast, exciting and evocative.

Our American Home includes several other, very recognizable compositions, including Aaron Copland’s noble Fanfare for the Common Man and Samuel Barber’s Adagio for Strings, a heartbreaking piece most famously featured in the film, Platoon. Rounding out the concert is another Copland composition, the Suite from The Tender Land. In addition to being an orchestral showpiece, the suite recalls other Copland compositions such as Appalachian Spring.
