The ninth annual Hood River Hard-Pressed Cider Fest returns on Saturday, April 27 - this year the signature cider event is being held at the Port of Hood River Event Site. The festival features the best in local ciders, music, art and more. And the festival is going Green with an option to bring your own cider mug!

The ninth annual Hood River Cider Fest returns April 27.
As spring unfolds in the Hood River Valley, the blossoming fruit orchards herald the return of the celebrated Hood River Hard-Pressed Cider Fest. Now in its ninth year, this beloved annual event invites seasoned and novice cider enthusiasts to come together and sample ciders from Columbia River Gorge and Pacific Northwest hard cider makers. With more than thirty participating cideries and over sixty ciders on tap, this family-friendly event is a quintessential celebration of spring in Hood River.
In 2023, Cider Fest shifted venues to the Port of Hood River Event Site, an idyllic waterfront location offering unparalleled views of the Columbia River and panoramic vistas of the Columbia River Gorge. This year, the event expands its footprint even further, providing beachfront access to the Columbia River and the option for attendees to bring their own glass, contributing to an immersive and sustainable Hood River experience.
"In an effort to reduce waste, the Hood River Cider Fest event no longer requires a commemorative glass for participation in the cider tasting," said event director Lee Perry with TrueWest Presents. "Commemorative glasses are available for pre-order purchase, and plastic cups for those who do not wish to purchase one, but we encourage attendees to contribute to reducing the event’s carbon footprint by bringing their own jars, mugs, or steins—all are allowed."
Beyond cider sampling, the day-long event boasts artisan food, art vendors, music, and a designated children’s play area. Various ticket options are available, including a $10 entry-only ticket or a Tasting Package ticket, which includes entry and 12 tasting tokens for $30 if purchased in advance. Attendees under the age of 21 receive free admission to the event. The festival’s expanded footprint provides free parking and ample room to roam.
"Cider Fest provides everyone the opportunity to explore and uncover new favorite ciders and cideries in an atmosphere filled with fun, festivity, and abundance," said Katie Kadlub, CEO of Visit Hood River. Heather, Farrell and Carly are the Newport Nightingales - A trio of lovely songbirds bringing you vintage jazz tunes for listening and dancing! Heather's love of jazz music must have come from watching old cartoons growing up. She performed in her first musical, Oliver!, at age 6. In high school, she played baritone saxophone for the marching and jazz bands. Farrell grew up listening to her grandfather play jazz standards in the garage and loved to watch Fred and Ginger movies as a kid. She’s spent half her life on the stage in one respect or another and hopes to continue to perform for years to come. Carly has been singing for as long as she can remember. From singing along to Broadway Kids tapes on long car trips as a kid, to a cappella in college, to being a preschool teacher and a Newport Nightingale now, Carly plans to never stop singing.

About the performance
Lovers of memorable melodies, lush harmonies and operatic drama are in for a treat on March 8 and 10, as the Columbia Gorge Orchestra Association presents “The Passion of Italy.” The concert, which combines the Gorge Sinfonietta and Voci Community Choir, includes music by Verdi, Albinoni, and Puccini’s most ambitious composition outside of his operas, the Missa di Gloria.
Sinfonietta conductor Mark Steighner says programming the Puccini Mass came at the suggestion of the orchestra’s concertmaster, Kirsten Norvell. “Kirsten plays in the Vancouver Symphony, and they recently performed the Mass. Of course, I was somewhat familiar with it already, but I was reminded of how beautiful it was,” Steighner said. “The Mass is actually a very early composition by Puccini, written long before he became famous for operas like La Boheme or Madame Butterfly. Still, it sounds like a Puccini opera. It’s melodic, inspiring, touching and uplifting.”
Steighner said that although Puccini’s Missa di Gloria is a setting of the Catholic liturgy, it isn’t a “sacred” composition written for church services. “By Puccini’s time, composers like Mozart, Beethoven, Berlioz and many others had written Masses for the concert hall, using the words of the Mass for their structure, beauty and drama.” Although Puccini’s family included church organists and others connected to the Church, his Mass was strictly secular.
The Gorge Sinfonietta is partnering with the Voci Community Choir for Puccini’s Mass. New Voci director Dan Kenealy, and music director at Hood River Valley High since Steighner’s retirement in 2015, is not only preparing the choir but will perform as the Mass’s baritone/bass soloist.
“Over the years, Voci and Sinfonietta have joined forces for amazing concerts of the Beethoven 9th, the Mozart Requiem and others, and the concerts tend to be standing room only events.” Steighner said that under Dan’s enthusiastic leadership, the Voci Choir has continued to grow. “There will be well over 100 musicians on the stage,” Steighner said. The Puccini Missa di Gloria is only part of the program, which also includes the overture to Verdi’s opera La Forza del Destino and the famous Adagio by Baroque composer Albinoni. Steighner said that the Verdi overture is “brilliant and full of drama.” Despite Verdi’s fame as an opera composer, few of his opera overtures are played in the concert hall. Rounding out the program is Albinoni’s Adagio. “I saw a list of ‘The Top Ten Most Romantic Pieces of Classical Music,” Steighner said. “We’ll, I’m not sure that’s true, but for certain the Adagio is beautiful and very recognizable. It has been used in over 40 films.”

R.A.P. Ferreira
R.A.P. Ferreira (fka milo) (aka scallops hotel) is an mc, producer and theorist working in the Black arts tradition commonly categorized as rap. Having founded the label ruby yacht in 2015 and since releasing all of his music through this channel, Ferreira has earned a sizable following within independent hip hop by rigorous, constant touring and an elevated, explorational style of performance. He is known for an uncompromised, utopic flow that speaks directly to the root of the listener.
By 2018, the young artist galvanized his presence in the American rap scene with the opening of Soulfolks Records & Tapes in Biddeford, Maine (now located in Nashville). He currently makes his home in Nashville, Tennessee where he continues to helm the Ruby Yacht while studying to become a blues guitar legend and a farmer.
Cristalle Bowen, (aka Psalm One), has been consistently recognized as one of independent hip hop’s most forward thinkers. A prolific recording, touring and mentoring artist, Psalm has been featured in publications from Forbes to Rolling Stone.
Since 2006 she has commanded festival and venue stages all over the United States and Europe, sharing bills with everyone from Tyler, the Creator to Gucci Mane to Wu-Tang Clan.
More than an entertainer, Psalm is a scholar, teacher and is very active in her community, serving as treasurer on the board of a disaster relief organization. Psalm has been an exciting artist to watch for more than a decade — a champion for women and lgbtqai+ artists.

About The Event
Chris has spent the last 5.5 decades exploring clay and ceramic arts or as he likes to say, “after exploring all the various art classes at my local Community College, in 1969 a chance encounter with the college pottery studio led me into the lucrative world of ceramics where success has often earned me literally hundreds of dollars a year.” Chris has worked in nearly all variations of the ceramic medium from Saggar firing and Raku, through salt firing, soda firing, wood firing and high fire gas reduction to basic electric kiln firing. This exhibit will feature work from across his 55 - year career and includes a full range of mediums from his “checkered career as an artiste.”

Chamber Music at HR Valley Christian Church
Columbia Gorge Orchestra Association presents an Afternoon of Chamber Music on Sunday, Feb. 25, at 2 p.m. at Hood River Valley Christian Church in Hood River. The event promises “an afternoon of intimate Chamber Music performed by CGOA musicians and special guests.” The concert will feature an engaging variety of music performed by local musicians.
Performers include a brass ensemble from the Sinfonietta, solo piano music by Ravel performed by CGOA favorite Mitchell Jet Spencer, the Riverside Chancel Choir singing music by Eric Whitacre, a Shostakovich piano trio…and even a bagpiper, which may be a first for CGOA.
Admission is by donation at the door.

StoryPlay: Youth Storytelling Series
StoryPlay - a Gorge Speakeasy Youth Series - announces upcoming workshops for students (grades 6-12) to learn the art and play of storytelling. Students will meet at the Hood River County Library over four Saturdays (Jan. 27, Feb. 3, Feb. 10, Feb. 17) to get ready for a live performance (Feb. 24).

What comes to mind when you think of “storytelling”?
Telling a great story isn’t just about making people laugh or cry. It’s about sharing an event that changed you and how you live your life. And now, we’re inviting students in grades 6-12 to learn the art and play of storytelling through StoryPlay, the Gorge Speakeasy’s youth series!
Over four Saturdays, teens will meet in the library to learn how to be a fantastic storyteller. They’ll learn from storytelling pros about how to craft a story that makes an impact, how to present it to hold audience attention, how to improvise instead of memorize, and how to be more comfortable speaking in front of others. This is not a lecture-style series; games and activities are woven into the curriculum for maximum storytelling fun.
Students in grades 6-8 will meet at 10 a.m.-12 p.m. and students in grades 7-12 will meet at 12-2 p.m. on the following dates: Jan. 27, Feb. 3, Feb. 10, and Feb. 17 (four Saturdays in a row).
The series culminates on February 24, when teens who want to can share their story in a live performance on stage at The Ruins in Hood River. This will be a Saturday matinee very similar to the monthly adult storytelling event, the Gorge Speakeasy.

About the artist
While Dionne was performing background with the Drifters’ in 1962, Warwick’s voice and star presence were noticed by the song’s composer, Burt Bacharach. Dionne was signed to Bacharach’s and David’s production company, which in turn was signed to Scepter Records. In November of 1962, Scepter Records released her first solo single, “Don’t Make Me Over.” It reached #21 on the top 40. Warrick’s name was misspelled on the label, and then she started using her new spelling, “Warwick”, both professionally and personally. Her next hit single was “Anyone Who Had a Heart, followed by “Walk on By” in 1964 that solidified her career.
Warwick weathered the British Invasion better than most American artists with hits of “Walk on By,” and “Do You Know the Way to San Jose.” Warwick was named the bestselling female vocalist in 1964. In 1965, she recorded “Thunderball” which became the theme song for the James Bond film Thunderball.
Dionne is one of the Kennedy Center Honorees in 2023 recognizing her decades of contributions to music and humanity. Dionne has won six Grammy Awards and been nominated a total of fifteen times. She has been inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame and has been honored with the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, Songwriters Hall of Fame, Living Legend Award, just to name a few. She is one of the top five most recorded female artists of all time. She is also the aunt of legendary singer Whitney Houston.
