Sonnes, ‘Art Club’ show at Columbia Center for Arts

Columbia Center for the Arts in Hood River is proud to present the work of mixed media artist Carmen Sonnes in its main gallery for the month of October, and a collective show of works by members of the Hood River Art Club in its “Lobby for Local Art” gallery.

About the Artists

Carmen arrived in this area from South Texas back in the 80’s, fell in love with the Pacific Northwest, and never left. The child of migrant farm workers, she grew up in orchards, vineyards, and farms very similar to those here in the Hood River Valley. Carmen was an inquisitive but painfully shy kid, so she spent a lot of time alone, drawing and imagining. She kept imagining, sketching, and painting for the next 60 years. Carmen has no formal training or art studies: she simply creates from her heart and mind, delighting in the act of “making art.” She especially enjoys recycling, repurposing, and finding an artful way of giving items new lives and meaning.

The Hood River Art Club show will feature 20 works from club members. Now in its 74th year (wow!), the Club provides a supportive environment for local artists to meet and improve their skills, share stories and improve their community. “We are so excited to host the Hood River Art Club in our Lobby for Local Art gallery this month because we want everyone to know that this is a community art center and the art created by our community members is important to see and share,” said Columbia Art board chair Genevieve Scholl.

The musical tells the story of a newly engaged couple getting caught in a storm and coming to the home of a mad transvestite scientist, Dr Frank-N-Furter, unveiling his new creation, Rocky, a sort of Frankenstein-style monster in the form of an artificially made, fully grown, physically perfect muscle man complete "with blond hair and a tan".”

Tickets $25 adults ($15 CGOA members), $5 youth ages 10-17, free for kids under 10, tickets available at www.gorgeorchestra.org

About the event

Pop star, matinee idol, raconteur...for decades, Frank Sinatra was one of America's biggest celebrities. You know the hits: Strangers in the Night, My Way, The Best is Yet to Come, New York, New York...really, too many to list. And let's not forget the movies like “Guys and Dolls,” “From Here to Eternity” and “Pal Joey.” Then there are the Las Vegas shows, the TV appearances...Frank Sinatra was at the heart of popular culture.

Frank Sinatra began his career singing with big bands, and while we can't hop in a time machine back to the 1930s and 40s, CGOA can bring you the next best thing. Oh, and dancing is more than allowed...it's encouraged. So put on your porkpie hat -- Frank famously said how you wear your hat is all about "angles and attitudes" -- dress to the nines and enjoy the return of Old Blue Eyes, courtesy of CGOA.

 About the Book

“The Graveyard Book” by Neil Gaiman

“IT TAKES A GRAVEYARD TO RAISE A CHILD.”

“Nobody Owens, known as Bod, is a normal boy. He would be completely normal if he didn’t live in a graveyard, being raised by ghosts, with a guardian who belongs to neither the world of the living nor the dead. There are adventures in the graveyard for a boy—an ancient Indigo Man, a gateway to the abandoned city of ghouls, the strange and terrible Sleer. But if Bod leaves the graveyard, he will be in danger from the man Jack — who has already killed Bod’s family. The Graveyard Book, a modern classic, is the only work ever to win both the Newbery (US) and Carnegie (UK) medals.
