The Dalles, OR, July 24, 2023– In a heartwarming display of nostalgia and dedication to preserving local history, the iconic Big Jim's Drive-In and Restaurant is set to breathe new life into a cherished landmark, The Ranch, in neighboring Hood River, OR. That’s right, the renowned eatery, which has been serving up mouthwatering hamburgers made with love since 1966, is expanding its roots with the opening of a second location in the spring of 2024.

Big Jim's Drive-In, has long been a cornerstone of the community, etching its place in the hearts of generations of locals. Their slogan, "Hamburgers made with love," reflects not only their commitment to crafting delicious food but also the passion and care they put into the community.

The decision to venture beyond their original location and embrace The Ranch came as a heartfelt tribute to the childhood memories of the owners Jason Taylor and Derek Deborde, who fondly recalled visiting The Ranch for their signature mini burgers after baseball games during their formative years. When the building that housed The Ranch faced an uncertain fate, Big Jim's stepped in, determined to honor the memory of the landmark rather than see it transformed into just another corporate chain.

Though the journey towards reopening The Ranch’s doors has not been without its challenges, the unwavering spirit of the Big Jim's team has shone through as they met challenges such as the global pandemic, extensive renovations and permitting processes.

Big Jim’s Manager Payton Hill said that the community's anticipation and support have fueled the drive to overcome these obstacles.

“We’ve had so many people supporting us and asking us questions about when we’ll open. We’ve received calls, text, emails, even hand written letters. Everyone is very excited about it and that means a lot to us,” said Hill.

Preserving the essence of The Ranch while enhancing its offerings and expanding the Big Jim’s brand has been a top priority for Big Jim's. The exterior of the building will be lovingly maintained to retain the charm that locals have come to know and love. Additionally, the establishment will welcome patrons with outdoor seating, ideal for relishing delicious meals amidst the scenic beauty of the heights of Hood River.

Inside, the transformation will breathe new life into the space, creating an inviting ambiance that combines the nostalgia of the past with modern updates.

“Inside it will be like it’s a completely new building,” said Hill.

Big Jim's lunch menu, replete with their legendary hamburgers, will be carried over to The Ranch location, now complemented by a delectable breakfast spread that promises to be a hit with early risers and weekend brunch enthusiasts.

“We’re teaming up with professional Chef’s to take The Ranch’s breakfast menu to the next level,” said Hill.

Moreover, in a move sure to delight adult diners, Big Jim's is in the process of obtaining an OLCC permit, allowing them to offer a selection of beer, wine, and maybe even cocktails alongside their meals.

“We want folks to be able to order a mimosa with breakfast if they want to,” said Hill.

The introduction of 16 flavors of hard ice cream and 4 kinds of soft serve also promises a delightful treat for all; firmly establishing Big Jim’s second location as a destination for not just nostalgic hamburgers and tots but also sweet indulgences.

The future opening of Big Jim's Drive-In II is eagerly anticipated, with locals and visitors alike eagerly awaiting the chance to revisit cherished memories and create new ones. The venture stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of community-driven businesses.

“We’re excited for Hood River to see what we’re planning,” said Hill, who also wanted to remind folks that Big Jims focuses on making good food, not fast food and that when they open they’ll likely need to make some adjustments as they go.

“Please be patient with us that first month or so,” he said.

As the spring of 2024 draws near, the reopening of The Ranch by Big Jim's Drive-In is poised to write a new chapter of Hood River's culinary heritage. With their trademark passion and love for crafting exceptional comfort food, Big Jim's is set to carry forward the legacy of The Ranch as the second location of Big Jims Drive-In ensuring the location will endure as a treasured local landmark for generations to come.
