TDHS Riverhawk Sports Notes by Billy Brost -Nov. 9

By Bill Brost

Happy Tuesday evening! It’s been a crazy last week to ten days for our TDHS athletic department, as we helped prepare our student-athletes for postseason play and competition this past week. This edition of “Notes” will be the last until Winter Sports’ season practices are underway for a couple of weeks. I’ll continue to post stories and announcements, but for the time being, “Notes” will take a week or so off before jumping into our next season. Let’s review the final week of our Fall Sports’ season!

Hello, World!

The Week That Was:

-During the first part of the week, the IMC announced all-conference volleyball honors, and four of our Riverhawks were selected. They include: Kennedy Abbas, who was selected to the IMC second team; Sophomore Zoe LeBreton, an outside hitter, was selected IMC Honorable Mention, as was junior middle blocker Zoe Dunn. Rounding out the Riverhawks’ regular-season volleyball honors is Jeilane Stewart, a sophomore setter, who was also selected IMC Honorable Mention.

-On Wednesday, Nov. 3, the Boys’ Varsity Soccer team traveled for the opening round of the OSAA State 5A Soccer Tournament at #1-ranked LaSalle. In a downpour, our boys played hard and showed the heart of the Riverhawk, but fell to the top team in all of 5A, by the final of 5-0.

-On Friday, Nov. 5, our Boys’ and Girls’ Varsity Cross Country teams left TDHS to an excited student body, and a local law enforcement escort out of town to Eugene for the OSAA State Cross Country Championships held at Lane Community College on Saturday afternoon. The Boys’ team finished sixth, while the Girls’ cracked the top-10, coming in ninth. Individual results are as follows:

 Boys:

Juan Diego Contreras finished 3rd with a time of 15:38.6.

Leo Lemann finished 18th by finishing with a 16:54.3.

Egan Ziegenhagen ran an 18:06.5, good for a 45th place finish.

Vincent Ziegenhagen finished 67th by running a time of 18:58.9.

Conor Blair in his final race as a Riverhawk, finished 68th with a 19:05.9.

Trey Hodges finished 72nd with a time of 19:15.3.

Kaden McCavic was right behind Hodges, placing 73rd by running a 19:15.5.

The Boys’ team finished the State Meet with a score of 187.

 Girls:

Alana Casady and Caitie Wring, having pushed each other to greatness all season long, finished with identical times of 21:14.7, placing them 33rd and 34th, respectively.

Fiona Dunlop finished 54th with a time of 22:30.5.

Gabrielle Kahler finished her meet placing 73rd with a time of 23:35.2.

Lucy Booth finished 79th with a race time of 24:17.0 flat.

Caitlin Frakes came in right behind her in 80th with a time of 24:28.4.

The Girls’ team finished the State Meet with a score of 250.

Our varsity cheer stunt team also made their presence felt on Saturday, Nov. 6, as they placed 3rd at the All-State 2021 competition. Competing against 42 other athletes, one Riverhawk in particular sparkled above the rest, as Meli Avila was named to the All-State team! Congratulations to the team and to Meli for a job well done!

The Week Ahead:

-With no sporting activities this week, it is IMC All-Conference honors being announced for various sports. The All-IMC Volleyball team was announced last week, and on Monday, nine members of the Riverhawks’ football team also were honored for their outstanding play this past season.

Those receiving honors for Riverhawks’ football include:

Senior Jaxon Pullen: Second Team WR/Kick Returner

Senior Majestic Iauluola: Honorable Mention OL

Junior Riley Brock: Second Team LB/Honorable Mention QB

Junior Mynoah Iauluola: Second Team OL

Junior Manatu Crichton-Tunai: Honorable Mention RB

Junior Evan Baldy: Honorable Mention OL

Junior Joe Codding: Honorable Mention OL

Sophomore Andre Niko: Second Team RB (Not Pictured)

Sophomore Anthony Jara: Honorable Mention CB

Congratulations to our football players for representing our community and school well!

-Earlier today, the All-IMC Boys’ Soccer team was announced, and just with volleyball and football, the Riverhawks had plenty to celebrate.

Those receiving honors for Riverhawks’ Boys’ Soccer include:

First Team IMC: Senior Alex Wood (CB)

First Team IMC: Freshman Hulices Najera (FWD)

Second Team IMC: Senior Harry Proctor (RB)

Second Team IMC: Junior Daniel Cantolan (M)

Second Team IMC: Junior Grey Roetcisoender (CDM)

Second Team IMC: Sophomore Luciano Alvarado (GK)

Honorable Mention IMC: Senior Tristan Bass (LB)

-All State Cross Country was announced at the completion of the State Cross Country Championships, and The Dalles once again made their presence felt. Congratulations to Juan Diego Contreras, who was named First Team All-State for 5A Boys, and to Leo Lemann, who was named 3rd Team All-State for 5A Boys. Congratulations gents for your efforts during the season!

-On Friday, the All-IMC Girls’ Soccer team will be announced, and it is probably safe to say that our Riverhawks will continue to receive honors after a fabulous Fall Sports’ season across the board. We are so very proud of each student-athlete for the hard work and dedication not only to athletics, but to academics as well while competing at the highest levels of 5A Oregon athletics.

Odds and Ends:

-Winter Sports’ practices officially begin on Monday, November 15th.

-Sign up for Winter Sports using FamilyID. If you need assistance, please contact the Athletic Office.

-While Kurtz Gym is now open, and has hosted a Homecoming event as well as PE classes, the gym will be closed during the final week of 2021 for much-needed floor maintenance. That means that the Boys’ and Girls’ basketball teams will play one game each during the Christmas Break on the Wahtonka Campus.

-Finally, I wish to take a moment to say a great big THANK YOU to all of the people that made Fall Sports at The Dalles High School a success! Just like with our athletic teams, it takes a team of dedicated volunteers, paid staff, service providers, medical personnel, members of the media, our local law enforcement and EMT teams to ensure the safety and success of large events in our community. Most importantly, it takes supportive members of our student-athletes’ families to ensure the season-long success of our programs. THANK YOU FOR ALL THAT EACH OF YOU DO!

Until our next season begins, that was the week that was, and what’s coming up in Riverhawkland! I encourage you to come out and support our student-athletes this winter, practice social distancing, be safe, and as always, GO RIVERHAWKS!

 A.D. Brost
