Summer solstice never felt better as the Bargeway brings the vibes to drink in these longest days of the year. Nothing better to ice that heat than a music-laced vodka tonic in a glass dripping in condensation while you jump aboard a boat of battered prawns.

It’s all there at The Dalles Premier outdoor music venue as the Pub brings on another great lineup of local music.

Summer Night - Three Latino Bands at Jackson Park

The Columbia Gorge Orchestra Association presents a special Summer Night performance of Latin Music at Jackson Park in Hood River on Saturday, June 29, 6-8 p.m. Summer Night features three Latino bands: Los Renegados, Grupo Blindado, and the debut of a new and upcoming group: Nueva Tradicion. Admission to the event is free and all ages are welcome.

About the event

The performers will bring together music fans and families from different demographic groups. This event will provide new opportunities for up-and-coming Latino ensembles to become better known and appreciated by Gorge residents who might not have heard about their talents or attended one of their performances.

The Columbia Gorge Orchestra Association has had the opportunity to work closely with Alcance Consulting, a local Latino owned company, that is organizing and producing this event, including recruiting local musicians and providing a bicultural experience for the audience. Both English and Spanish will be spoken and food will be offered for sale by Lake Taco. Yeli Vargas-Boots from Alcance Consulting said “We strive to create connections that bring people together. As a team, we are dedicated to fostering understanding, unity, and a sense of belonging within the diverse tapestry of our community through our partnership with CGOA, presenting Noche de Verano and these very talented local bands.”

‘Library of Things’ at Hood River Library

Hood River County Library presents “Getting to know your Library of Things: Cherry Pitter,” on Tuesday, June 25, at 5:30 p.m., in the Hood River Library Reading Room. Join in for a demonstration by an expert from the OSU Extension Services on the many uses of a cherry pitter, along with tips for preserving your fruit afterwards. This presentation is part of a larger series of classes offered at the Hood River and Cascade Locks libraries to help patrons safely and efficiently use some of the food preparation equipment in the Library of Things collection.

Tonight's performer will be Paul Steirle, formerly of the New Christy Minstrels. He will play guitar and sing songs from Bob Dylan’s early years, 1962-1974. He will trace Dylan’s progress through folk music, protest songs, folk rock, rock ‘n’ roll, country rock, and Christian music.

Jazz Collective Big Band plays The Dalles

The Jazz Collective Big Band will play a free Summer Kick-Off Concert at a special venue: Columbia Gorge Toyota and Honda (1800 West 6th St.) in The Dalles, on Sunday, June 23, 7 p.m. Indoor/seated show.

About the Event

The CGOA Jazz Collective Big Band has performed in a wide range of venues around the Gorge, but now the ensemble can add “car dealership” to the list. As the final concert of the CGOA 2023-24 season, the Jazz Collective will be presenting a concert at Columbia Gorge Toyota and Honda, 1900 W 6th St in The Dalles.

The concert is free and starts at 7 p.m. on Sunday, June 23. Columbia Gorge Toyota and Honda has been the headline sponsor for CGOA this season, helping to support a wide range of Sinfonietta, Voci, Jazz Collective and Stages productions.

According to Jazz Collective director Michael Paul, there was interest in doing a summer show in The Dalles, but finding a suitable outdoor venue was a problem. “We thought about performing on the CGCC campus or down at the river, but lack of wind protection and a stage meant those locations wouldn’t work.”

Although it is billed as a concert, Paul said there will be ample room for dancing. Refreshments will also be available. The Jazz Collective plays a wide range of traditional contemporary big band music from the golden age of swing through to the present day.

The Bingen Theater is bringing movies back! In between live theater, dance and music, we'll be bringing in occasional movies. We're kicking it off with the 40th anniversary re-release of what has been termed "The Greatest Concert Film of All Time. STOP MAKING SENSE: Newly restored in 4K to coincide with its 40th anniversary, the 1984 film was directed by renowned filmmaker Jonathan Demme and is considered by critics as the greatest concert film of all time. Stop Making Sense stars core band members David Byrne, Tina Weymouth, Chris Frantz, and Jerry Harrison along with Bernie Worrell, Alex Weir, Steve Scales, Lynn Mabry and Edna Holt. The live performance was shot over the course of three nights at Hollywood's Pantages Theater in December of 1983 and features Talking Heads' most memorable songs.

About the event

Reb & the Good News is a Portland based funk, world, and soul group that brings optimism and cathartic release to the dance floor. Catchy horn lines and sultry vocals soar over grooves that you can’t help but move to. Led by vocalist and guitarist Reb Conner, Reb’s love of rhythms from around the world brings the dance floor on a journey that’s full of surprises.

Formed in 2021 in the middle of the pandemic, these songs reach for hope in a world under pressure. Reb believes that through feeling deeply and dancing together, we can face all that we’re up against in this life. She is supported by her partner, sax and keys player Leon Cotter, (a touring member of the California Honeydrops), as well as some of Portland’s heaviest hitters: Cyrus Nabipoor on trumpet, Ross Garlow on bass, and Kirk Kalbfleisch on drums.
