Goldendale Wash., March 18, 2024 – Multiple agencies were called to a structure fire at Georgeville Rd, just off Highway 97 North of Goldendale. Sixty-foot-high flames and black smoke from the fire could be seen for miles on Monday, March 18 at 6:23 p.m.
Klickitat County Fire and Rescue Rural 7 was assisted by the Goldendale Fire Department, Klickitat EMS, Yakama Tribal Police, and Yakama Fish and Wildlife and Klickitat County Sheriff’s Office were among the agencies that responded to the fire.
Response time was 10-15 minutes, some 14 vehicles and 40 firefighters responded to the call.
Goldendale Fire Chief, Noah Halm said that when they arrived the large outbuilding was fully engulfed and flames were shooting 60+ feet in the air.
The outbuilding housed vehicles, cars, and boats. There was an estimated $70,000 loss of property. It’s unknown at this time if the property owners had insurance.
The structure was reportedly considered a “total loss,” according to those on the scene.
There was also ammunition stored in the outbuilding but fortunately, this did not interfere with firefighters ability to fight the fire.
The building was used to store fishing boats, nets, totes and where relatives stored their tools for work on their vehicles, according to a Facebook post from Erica N. Thompson. She said family used the building to mentor youths on mechanics from a young age.
One volunteer firefighter had to be carried from the scene on a stretcher due to health concerns.
No other injuries were reported.
CCCNews extends their heartfelt gratitude to the brave volunteer firefighters who protect our communities and pray for a speedy recovery.
