Road construction crews started in on a repaving project at the intersection of Jefferson and Third streets this morning, Monday, March 29, creating a detour for drivers while the project is underway for the next several days.

The is necessary after a water main broke in the intersection earlier this year and required extensive digging and removal of the asphalt.

City of The Dalles Chuck Patton said they are prepping the site today and will then come back and perform two lifts of asphalt on the intersection. Crews must locate utilities such as manhole covers and bring them up level with the street and then repaint the intersection with crosswalks. It’s not a simple task to make it all level and smooth, as is necessary for a street that carries so much traffic.

All told, the work is expected to last through Thursday, April 1.

A detour to E 1st St. is in place for eastbound traffic.

Motorists and bicyclists are asked to use alternate routes around the work zone during the closure.

Sidewalks will remain open to pedestrians.

The City asks drivers to use caution around work areas during work hours and observe all temporary traffic control devices. “Thank you for your assistance maintaining a safe work zone,” the posted on Facebook. If you have questions, please contact the Public Works Department at (541) 296-5401.
