The Dalles, Ore., April 19, 2026 — A Hood River man was arrested Sunday afternoon after allegedly driving under the influence and causing a crash on Interstate 84 that sent another driver to the hospital, according to Oregon State Police.
Troopers responded around 5:30 p.m. to a two-vehicle crash on westbound I-84 near milepost 44, where traffic had slowed. Investigators said a black Subaru Forester was stopped in heavy traffic when it was rear-ended by a white Subaru Forester.
The driver of the black Subaru, Andrew Sanchez, 46, of Tigard, was transported by ambulance to a Portland hospital for treatment of possible injuries.
Police said the driver of the white Subaru, Juan Carlos Linares, 42, of Hood River, showed signs of intoxication at the scene. He was taken into custody and later provided a breath sample of 0.09% using an Intoxilyzer 8000, according to the report.
Linares was cited on charges of driving under the influence of intoxicants, reckless driving, and recklessly endangering another person, and was released to the care of a family member pending a court appearance scheduled for May 19.
Both vehicles were towed from the scene, and traffic on the freeway was impacted for approximately 80 minutes.
Oregon State Police were assisted by Cascade Locks Fire and EMS.
