Portland Opera To Go (POGO) presents Shizue: An American Story
Hood River Valley High School, Bowe Theater
Thursday, Nov. 14, 7 p.m., doors open at 6:30 p.m.
Free and open to the public
About the event
Portland Opera to Go (POGO) presents their new commission for Fall 2024, Shizue: An American Story, composed by Kenji Oh, with a libretto by Dmae Lo Roberts. This new piece illuminates the life of the remarkable poet and artist Shizue Iwatsuki. Shizue lived an extraordinary life as an inspiring artist with an adventurous spirit, in Hood River, Oregon, despite facing bigotry and imprisonment in American concentration camps with thousands of other Japanese Americans during World War II. She became a leader in her community, celebrating Japanese culture and heritage while embracing American citizenship. Through it all, Shizue embodied the concept of gaman, which means “enduring the seemingly unbearable with patience and dignity.”
The show is just under an hour long and will be followed by a talk back with the artists, Dmae Lo Roberts (librettist/ director) and Linda Tamura, local historian and educator.
This opera is the second of Portland Opera’s Our Oregon Project, which commissions youth operas that highlight the experiences of Oregonians through a variety of lenses. This production is perfect for young audiences from 4th through 12th grade. In addition to the performance, Portland Opera offers an arts integrated curriculum and classroom visits.

Tickets are available at www.gorgeorchestra.org Tickets for high school and college students (with school ID) are free, and $5 tickets are available for those with Oregon SNAP cards.
About the concerts
In keeping with the theme of “Beloved Favorites and Exciting Discoveries,” the Gorge Sinfonietta presents its first concert of the season called “Sound the Trumpet.”
The title of the concert comes from one of the program’s selections, the Trumpet Concerto by Alexander Arutunian. Written in the early 1950s, Arutunian’s concerto is very popular with trumpet players. It’s dramatic, expressive and rhythmic. Of course, it's a showpiece for the soloist, too. In this case, the featured artist is Anders Foster, who teaches music at Wy’east. “Foster’s brilliant trumpet playing matches perfectly with the demands of the concerto,” said conductor Mark Steighner. “There are relatively few concertos for the trumpet, and the Arutunian is one of the best.”
Steighner said that the biggest piece on the program is one that audiences probably won’t know. “We’re playing the Gaelic Symphony by American female composer Amy Beach. It’s immense, technically challenging and extremely impressive.”
Amy Beach, who was born in the 1860s and died in 1944, was the best and most accomplished female composer in the early 20th century. Steighner said, “Amy Beach is best known for her songs and piano music, but she wrote three or four really big works, too. The biggest is the symphony.” The symphony is loosely based on folk songs from Ireland and was premiered when the composer was only 25. It was the first symphony by an American female composer to be professionally performed.
“Sadly, concert audiences mostly hear music by white, European or American men,” Steighner said. “The music of Bach, Beethoven, Brahms is obviously great, but there’s a lot more to the story. Women have been composers as far back as Hildegard von Bingen, back in the Middle Ages.”
Rounding out the program is one of those “beloved favorites,” the tone poem Finlandia by Jean Sibelius. Steighner said that over the past 20 years, the Sinfonietta has played the work once before. “Like in so much of his music, Sibelius is able to capture the drama and beauty of nature and his homeland of Finland.”

Tickets available at: https://givebutter.com/geologyalive
About the event
The great scenic beauty of the Gorge owes much to the geological processes that have shaped it. Earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, landslides and debris flows still occur in the area today, and they can pose hazards to Gorge residents and visitors. What is the scope, severity, and likelihood of these hazards? How do scientists use evidence from the geological and historical past to evaluate the hazards, and how do they use models to forecast future hazards and inform our efforts to prepare for them? Join Dr. Richard “Dick” Iverson, Scientist Emeritus at the U.S. Geological Survey’s Cascades Volcano Observatory, as he digs into the geological hazards of the Gorge—and explains why they don’t discourage him from living here!

Jamgrass, newgrass, funkgrass, whatever you want to call it — Armchair Boogie is rapidly becoming one of the country’s hottest acts. With an unbounded sound, this Wisconsin-based quartet is known for their powerful harmonies, timeless originals, and choice covers, along with unforgettable live performances. Listed as a “Must-See Roots Artists at Bourbon & Beyond'' by The Bluegrass Situation who wrote, “We recently caught this jammy Wisconsin outfit at Earl Scruggs Music Festival, where they burnt down their late-night set.”
Armchair Boogie is Augie Dougherty on banjo with Ben Majeska acoustic & electric guitars backed by tight, driving rhythms of Eli Frieders on electric bass and Denzel Connor on drums. This unconventional lineup enhances their lightning-fast bluegrass, allowing them to freely venture into the realms of funk or country.
ROUX DIO
Roux Dio has been simmering along in Hood River since summer of 2024. The quintet is a special sauce of original fun and funky swamp-boogie and new grass tunes with deep grooves and improvisation in the mix. Only the finest ingredients went into the cauldron for this batch and one thing is certain: Luke Maddux, Neil Mangrum, Hunter Parmentier, Andy Lade and Rory Johnson are cooking up some fine musical sustenance that needs to be served up hot.

Erik Koskinen is an American singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and producer, whose music is not categorized by sub-genres. Stylistically he is on his own while heavily influenced by American roots music.

An internationally touring musician with a background in theater, Jones delights audiences with her irresistible stage presence and enrapturing voice. She has spoken at the US Embassy in Ethiopia on Women in Music, was selected with her former band Crow and the Canyon for the American Music Abroad program, and has toured the US from coast to coast since 2010.
Saturday, Nov. 16, Cascadian Bluegrass Caravan Featuring: Fog Holler, Quattlebaum & Billy Sheeley (of Greenneck Daredevils), $15 Advance // $15 Day Of Show, 6 p.m. Doors / 7 p.m. Show, All Ages
Fog Holler is a bluegrass band with an edge. What gives the band that edge is a topic of hot debate. For some, it’s musicianship - these bluegrass cats shred. For others, it’s the songwriting, traditional in style but topical in substance. Sometimes, they undeniably snare people with the squad factor - folks see 4 grown adults in matching monochrome, and they get curious. The secret, according to Fog Holler, is simply that they write and play bluegrass in 2024, with similar intention but very different context from the genre’s originators. Inspired by a range of influences from The Stanley Brothers to Buck Owens to Meshuggah, Fog Holler breathes fresh life into well worn forms like the murder ballad and the power waltz.
Quattlebaum, Southern Gent and Banjo Slinger, brings more to the table than just music. With his infectious smile and weird antics, he brings people together; encouraging camaraderie and building community. The singer-songwriter, currently based in Bend, Oregon, tours the country picking and strumming indie-folk songs that are spacious and emotive, and have an implicit groove. When he plays, you can hear the reverberations of the rustic mountains clashing with the breezy ocean. Like a willowy heron, Quattlebaum struts around on stage as the music moves through him, evoking a range of emotions from laughter to longing.
Billy Sheeley (of Greenneck Daredevils) grew up in Central Texas outside of Austin in the Hill Country. While attending college in Huntsville, Texas he formed a band called The 19th & ½ St. band where he would make a name for himself as a singer songwriter in East Texas. Billy now lives in Hood River, OR, as the frontman for The Greenneck Daredevils, a high energy foot stomping local band that has embedded itself in the Columbia River Gorge. Billy has a genuine style and charismatic display of americana music that resonates with crowds.
