Four Rivers Family & Books For Kids Donate to Local Groups Through Oregon Early Literacy Grant

The Dalles, Ore. -  Four Rivers Early Learning Hub, in partnership with Books for Kids Columbia Gorge, proudly announces the allocation of $7000 in early literacy grant funding to local programs serving young children.

This initiative supports early childhood education by providing nearly 1,600 books to over 650 children from birth to age five across Hood River and Wasco Counties. These funds were provided by the Department of Early Learning and Care (DELC) and the Birth to Five Early Literacy Program (BTFELP).  

Through this partnership, the following programs received book grants:

  • Oregon Child Development Coalition (OCDC) Hood River & The Dalles

  • Mid-Columbia Children's Council, Oregon

  • The Next Door Inc., Family Services Home Visiting

  • Kiddie City (Parkdale & Cascade Locks)

  • Nana's Daycare Yoyo’s Daycare

  • Native American/Migrant Education Columbia Gorge Educational Services District (CGESD)

“This initiative underscores our commitment to fostering early literacy and ensuring that every child, regardless of background, has access to quality books,” said Shira Skybinskyy, Director of Four Rivers Early Learning Hub.

Books for Kids and Four Rivers Family recognize the vital role of early exposure to books in developing strong reading skills and lifelong learning habits. By working together with local organizations, they aim to bridge literacy gaps and provide educational opportunities for children in our communities.

Books for Kids Columbia Gorge has been positively impacting literacy in the Gorge for more than two decades. Books for Kids Columbia Gorge is on a mission to increase education equity and promote literacy by providing new, high-quality books to kids in the Columbia Gorge Region who need them most. This mission is informed by research showing that books in the home lead to greater educational attainment and skills in adulthood.

About Four Rivers Family Early Learning and Parenting Hub 

Housed within the Columbia Gorge Education Service District, Four Rivers Family Early Learning and Parenting Hub works in collaboration with local community partners across Gilliam, Hood River, Sherman, Wasco, and Wheeler Counties to connect families with resources and programs that ensure better overall outcomes for young children. The hub focuses on three key goals: preparing children for kindergarten, promoting stable and attached families, and coordinating and aligning services. The Hub is a program within the Columbia Gorge Education Service District, which provides a wide array of education-related services from PreK through high school, many in close partnership with school districts and community organizations.
