The Dalles, Ore., July 4, 2024 — American Flags and running shoes had locals up and at ‘em this morning in The Dalles as we celebrate the birth of our country.

Boy Scouts and their troop leaders were busy putting up American Flags at 6 a.m., adorning the downtown district and beyond with reminders of our freedom.

The flags provide an excellent backdrop for the Fourth of July Parade that is set to go off at 10 a.m. It starts near Burger King on West Sixth Street and winds through Third and Second sstreets downtown.

The Bargeway Pub was the starting and finish point for the run and later hosted a Free Breakfast from McDonalds followed by Yoga conducted by Sam Whitley.

Harriers also made the run to the Bargeway Pub for the Rocket Run, a fundraiser for The Dalles High School Cross Country team.

Theresa Dwyer of The Dalles posted the best time in the 1-mile run this morning, pushing herself to conquer the 5,280 feet in 7 minutes and 32 seconds.

More than 80 runners entered the race that offered 1-mile, 3k and 5k options.

Cross Country Coach Jill Pearson said she was pleased with the turnout as the event keeps building.

Bryan Mears from Hood River showed up in his tutu for the Rocket Run this morning. Ever the promoter of running, he said he made the trip to support the running team and put some smiles on people’s faces.
