Free Fishing Weekend Returns June 6-7; No License Required Across Oregon
By Joshuah Albert
The Dalles, Ore., June 3, 2026 — Residents of Wasco and Hood River counties will have an opportunity to fish Oregon waters without purchasing a license during the state's annual Free Fishing Weekend on June 6-7.
The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife is waiving license requirements statewide for the two-day event, allowing both residents and visitors to fish, crab, and clam without the usual permits. The program is designed to encourage people to try fishing, spend time outdoors, and introduce children and families to the sport.
During Free Fishing Weekend, anglers do not need a fishing license, combined angling tag, Columbia Basin endorsement, ocean endorsement, Rogue-South Coast Steelhead Validation or Two-Rod Validation.
For local anglers, the Columbia River and its tributaries provide numerous opportunities close to home. Popular destinations in the Mid-Columbia region include shoreline access along the Columbia River near The Dalles and Hood River, as well as nearby lakes, ponds and reservoirs where warm-water species are commonly found.
While license requirements are waived, all other fishing regulations remain in effect. Anglers must still follow daily bag limits, size restrictions, area closures and seasonal regulations. ODFW advises anyone planning to fish for salmon or steelhead to review current regulations before heading out, as some rules can change during the season.
Free Fishing Weekend is often one of the busiest fishing periods of the year as families take advantage of the opportunity to introduce children and first-time anglers to the sport without the added expense of licenses and endorsements.
Across Oregon, ODFW staff and partner organizations will host a series of free fishing events where participants can borrow equipment and receive instruction on casting, rigging tackle, landing fish, and identifying their catch. Although no official ODFW-sponsored events are scheduled in Wasco or Hood River counties this weekend, local anglers are encouraged to take advantage of the Columbia Gorge's abundant fishing opportunities.
A second Free Fishing Weekend is scheduled for Nov. 27-28 during Thanksgiving weekend.
Current fishing regulations, area closures, and additional information are available through the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife.
