The Dalles, Ore., May 6, 2024 – Brick City & Games is celebrating becoming a sanctioned Magic the Gathering store, (the only one in The Dalles!) by inviting the community to come out and play Magic the Gathering on Friday nights at 5 p.m. and enjoy some community, fun and games!
Know before you go:
Players are invited to bring their own deck, borrow a deck, or purchase (or borrow) a starter deck in the store.
Friday Night Magic events are free to the community! (With the exception of the occasional draft night. The next of which is scheduled to take place in June!)
Players can play whatever format they like (standard, pauper, commander, two-headed dragon, etc.) as long as there is someone else that wants to play that format with them.
“Most players play Commander,” says Leslie Wilson, co-owner of Brick City & Games.
It’s Kind of a Big Deal
For those not in the know, getting sanctioned status is a big deal. (Pun intended.) It requires a lot of legwork. Including giving Wizards of the Coast a virtual tour of the customer facing and staff only areas of the store and proving your knowledge of the game. Not to mention the ongoing behind the scenes work of scheduling, tracking, posting, and facilitating events.
“We’ve been working hard to get officially sanctioned by the Wizards of the Coast,” said Leslie. “There’s hours and hours of training.”
Even so, they don’t take themselves too seriously.
If it’s so much work, why put in the effort?
“It was highly requested by customers coming into the store,” said Leslie, adding some context to the decision, “It was a group effort. Many regular players, including Kit, Dan, Chuck, and James helped us to get it off the ground. Part of what we want to do is carry on the legacy of Chuck Webber’s (now closed) game store, Oregon Trail Games, and Mel’s Gameopoly store and then bring in our own unique flavor with the Lego. What we were still missing was really that Magic the Gathering element from Chuck’s store and people we’re really hungry for a public space where they can play Magic together.”
The store’s sanctioned status will also allow them to offer special events, tournaments, draft nights, and prereleases to their customers.
Brick City hopes Friday Night Magic will encourage more beginner players and youth to come out and play.
“We would love to start a youth league for Magic the Gathering and Dungeons & Dragons, but need more middle and high school students willing to play! Magic’s philosophy is all about inclusion and we have a very diverse group who come in and play! We have such great people here, there’s usually always someone that is willing to teach you the ropes and if you want to come down here and just check it out. If you don’t have a deck, we will loan you one for free and you can test it out and see if this game is for you,” says Leslie.
Her words of advice to beginners?
Just do your best, have fun and make friends along the way!
“Magic is not what people think it is, it’s a very diverse and dynamic strategy card game that allows you to use your imagination. It’s a bit of a wormhole. You can get sucked in fast and you can be as competitive as you want to be. Most of the people here play casually.” says Leslie.
Even so, there are a few rules to keep in mind.
“We have three basic rules: don’t steal, don’t stink, and don’t be a d*ck,” she says with a mischievous laugh.
“But seriously, we have a lot of fun!” Leslie adds “Technically we close at eight on Friday nights but oftentimes we're here until midnight! And there's a lot of laughs and people leave here happy. And that’s what makes it all worthwhile. We love getting to provide a space where people can just enjoy themselves for a few hours out of their week.”
Don’t have a deck? Need to rework an old one? The store has you covered.
“We have commander decks, planeswalker decks, booster packs and the Gorge’s largest collection of loose cards. We have boxes and binders full of commons, uncommons, lands, rares, mythics and more to choose from,” says Leslie. “We also have Dragon Shield card sleeves, several types of deck boxes, playmats, dice, and life counters for those who are needing to add them to their game.”
Not ready to buy a deck?
Come play for free to learn the game until you know it's right for you! There's no need to spend any money up front. For those who are well established with Magic the Gathering, stay tuned to the store's website, Facebook page, and Wizards EventLink for more information about draft nights, Commander nights, deck building seminars, prerelease parties and tournaments! Players are encouraged to download the Wizards Companion app and search for events to attend and to register for upcoming events.
