March Continues to ROAR Louder than a gaggle of Bagpipers at a St. Patrick’s Day Parade. Irish events are runnin’ on like a pint of Guiness as celebrations pour into Weekend events this year. Bands are more plentiful than 4-leaf clover in a sheep pasture. Latch yourself to this leprechaun of gigs and force it to give up it’s entertainment gold.

Proprietors Steve and Stacey Kane are working hard to put some punch in Spring. They’re ensuring March will be roaring like a lion come St Paddy’s Day weekend.
Brewer’s Grade Band is making its way to the Bargeway for St. Paddy’s during their current mini tour.

Portland's #1 Soul Brother returns to The Ruins!
Walking through the residential heart of Portland’s Mississippi district you’ll find a charming wooden house under the overcast Oregon sky. This local landmark is the home of soul legend Ural Thomas, built by hand with found materials decades ago. The basement is overflowing with musical equipment. When you walk down into the room you may see Portland’s Soul Brother Number One at the table chuckling, telling stories and jokes, and espousing his personal humanist philosophy obtained from 82 years of unfathomable experiences. He’s often joined by either his generations of biological posterity or the adopted family, which is his band, The Pain. You may also find this infinitely magnetic personality ripping through a cover song at full volume or working out a new original with his loved ones. Though Ural Thomas is widely recognized as one of the most exciting singers remaining from the original soul era, and an active musical institution for over 60 years, his band, all decades younger, are treated as equals. The Pain is no backing band, but rather a well-oiled tightly-knit musical aggregation that’s spent the last eight years with Thomas developing a unique sound of its own.

Yak Attack is a live electronic power trio. Oregon white oak trees seem abundant, almost weedy in the gorge. They are the least showy of our native hardwoods and often look as though they are falling apart. So why in 2020 did a diverse group of stakeholders, band together for a closer look at these native trees? Why are oaks being called a lifeboat? A safe-zone for species trying to survive the subtle (and not so subtle) changes that are accompanying our changing climate?And how might new efforts to conserve and restore oak woodlands in the Gorge impact our landscapes, people, and even economy? Join Lindsay Cornelius, Manager of the East Cascades Oak Partnership, to learn why oaks make such excellent neighbors in a place prone to drought, fires, heat, and wind. And explore how these sometimes decrepit-looking trees are actually supporting vibrant life – more so than any other tree species in the Gorge.

About the concerts
From the profound romanticism of Tchaikovsky’s Romeo and Juliet, to Dvorak’s lyrical 8th Symphony to Prokofiev’s quirky and playful music for the movies, the Gorge Sinfonietta’s “Slavic Fantasy” concert has something for every music lover. Focused on composers from 19th century Russia and eastern Europe, the concert is heavy on melody, beauty and audience appeal.
Slavic Fantasy concert
Tchaikovsky’s Fantasy Overture on Romeo and Juliet was drafted when the composer was only 29, but the final version appeared ten years later. Highlighting some of the incidents and characters in Shakespeare’s drama, Tchaikovsky’s portrait contains what’s probably the single most recognizable love theme in all of classical music. Conductor Mark Steighner said “You could call it ‘radical Romanticism.’ That theme is over-the-top emotional, but we forget how striking it was at the time.”
Antonin Dvorak is best known for his New World Symphony, but that work’s immediate predecessor is even more tuneful and uplifting. “Dvorak’s 8th Symphony is by turns Romantic, dance-like, simple like a folk song and as exciting as a film score from Hollywood,” Steighner said. “It goes through many moods, but it’s always beautiful and easy to enjoy.”
The final selection on the Slavic Fantasy program is a suite by 20th century composer Sergei Prokofiev. “We don’t often think of composers like Prokofiev writing movie music, but many of them did.” His Lt. Kije Suite is a selection of music written for a 1934 film, a comic satire about Czarist Russia, with a lot of slapstick comedy and absurdity. Like the film, the music is playful and almost never serious. “I think my favorite section is the final movement,” Steighner said, “when Kije is dying and his life flashes before his eyes, represented by all the different themes sort of colliding in his head.”
The Slavic Fantasy concert is one of three programs presented by the Gorge Sinfonietta this season. The final concert, called “Vacation Time: Postcards from a Musical Journey” will be in June.

Performing his 2010 ninth record, Saint Bartlett. This record, released by Secretly Canadian, was the first of 4 records that Damien had collaborated with the late PNW indie luminary Richard Swift (The Shins, The Black Keys, Nathaniel Rateliff). Pitchfork said in it's review upon release, "Produced by the increasingly ubiquitous Richard Swift, Saint Bartlett, Jurado's ninth record is, finally, a striking departure" and "The songs on Saint Bartlett would be considered an achievement for any artist-- but the fact that they come 13 years into a career makes the album even more of a triumph". Now 15 years old, Saint Bartlett stands as a landmark in the Indie Folk genre that gets better and better every time you listen to it.

Listening to the Seattle-based original funk & soul group, True Loves, is like walking down a favorite neighborhood street, slapping-five with friends, checking up with clerks in their stores, and smelling the familiar scents of your most cherished locale. The band is it’s own block party. What began in 2014 as a jam session between three of the city’s best- drummer David McGraw, bassist Bryant Moore and guitarist Jimmy James- has since blossomed into a global force that features percussionist Iván Galvez, Trombonist Greg Kramer, and saxophonists Gordon Brown and Skerik. Together, the group’s live performances have garnered them much acclaim and millions of streams on YouTube. In 2017, the True Loves recorded their debut instrumental LP, Famous Last Words, which received worldwide adoration, earning them spots at coveted music festivals. In 2018, the group released the “Dapper Derp/Kabuki” 45” on WeCoast Records followed by 2019’s Colemine Records “Famous Last Words/Mary Pop Poppins” 45 single. The band released their sophomore album “Sunday Afternoon” in 2021, on Color Red Music.

The last few years have been a little hazy for Lilly Hiatt, who finds herself searching for answers on her striking new album, Forever. Recorded at home with her husband, Coley Hinson, who produced and played most of the instruments, Forever grapples with growth and change, escape and anxiety, self-loathing and self-love. The songs are intensely vulnerable, full of diaristic snapshots and deeply personal ruminations, but they’re also broad invitations to find yourself in their unflinching emotional excavations. The result is a raw, unvarnished work of love and trust that walks the line between alt-rock muscle and singer/songwriter sensitivity, a bold, guitar-driven exploration of maturity and adulthood from an artist who wants you to know you’re not alone, no matter how lost you may feel.
Phillip-Michael was born in Michigan, forged in Chicago, and now lives in Nashville, TN. He grew up with B.B. King calling him “nephew” and calls his music "Dive Bar Soul," a blend of Indie Rock storytelling and the passion of the blues. In February of 2022, he caught the attention of Ellen Degeneres who featured him on her show. In June of 2024 he spent a month supporting Legendary Songwriter Keb’ Mo’ on tour.

Jake Xerxes Fussell is a singer, guitarist, and composer based in Durham, NC. His intuitive creative process often draws from traditional music and archival field recordings-incorporating elements of songs from the past into new work. He is, according to Ann Powers of NPR, "may be the leading interpreter of American folk music right now..."
Fussell’s most recent album “When I’m Called,” was released to critical acclaim by Fat Possum Records in the summer of 2024. The album was produced by James Elkington and features Blake Mills (guitars), Ben Whiteley (bass), and Joe Westerlund (drums), along with additional vocals from Joan Shelley and Robin Holcomb.
Fussell and Elkington also wrote and recorded the music for “Rebuilding,” a new feature film directed by Max Walker-Silverman that is set to premiere at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival.
“Fussell’s music often comes with complex citations; he is a folk singer in the truest sense,collecting ideas and melodies and lyrics from distant and disparate traditions, looking for the things that unite us in our humanity.”-The New Yorker
