Families Have A Hopping Good Time at The Dalles Library

The Dalles, Ore., February 10, 2024 — The Dalles Wasco County Library’s Second Saturday Storytime event series kicked off with an incredible turnout of over 100 people on Saturday Feb 10, 2024, much to the surprise of librarians.
Parents and children flocked for a chance to pet bunnies, listen to librarian’s read Porcupining: A Prickly Love Story by Lisa Wheeler, a children’s picture book about a porcupine who falls in love with a hedgehog, enjoy hedgehog cupcakes, pick up a hedgehog craft kit to take home kit.
“We have tried many many times to do Saturday morning story times and the first event is always pretty good and then it has fizzled. So I told Kirsten that if we got twenty people that would be a good day. And I thought at most we had maybe forty or fifty so I was in there with my clicker (a clicker is used for counting people) and I stopped at 107,” said Rita Squires.
Several attendees noted that the library’s free events and activities have become increasingly popular and important for families following the covid-19 pandemic and the rising cost of living in the area.
“Somebody once commented that libraries are the community's living room. I like to think of it more as a family room,” said Squires.
“The bunnies were a big hit,” said Kirsten Wells, who runs the children’s storytime series, “It was really cute. We read our book and the kids were great they were really engaged and into it. We read the book first because we know once the animals came out it would be all about them.”
Next month the library will have a mermaids and pirates themed storytime as a part of the library’s Treasure Island community read. Storytime occurs on the second Saturday of every month at 11:00 a.m.
