News You Can Use
Are You Registered?
Rapper Afroman is making a tour stop at The Granada Theater on Aug. 3, and it looks like part of the show may include a Campaign Speech. Afroman, who had a hit single in 2000 with “Because I Got High,” is on the official list of candidates for President in 2024. Don’t look for the Afroman stage name, though, he’s on the list as Joseph Foreman, registered in the Independent Party. If you’d like to see who else is on the ballot list, go to ballotpedia.org and be prepared to scroll through approximately 1,262 names, a number that took some fancy word-processing skills to obtain.
Refreshing Rock
Ashleigh Flynn & The Riveters made a July appearance in Hood River, and lucky for me the band’s 2018 self-titled album made an appearance in my multi-disc DVD player. I had to check to make sure what I was actually listening to when the first song came on, because this one’s a refreshing straight-ahead rocker. Flynn mentions the guitar playing abilities of Nancy Luca as the inspiration for departing from the folk/bluegrass upbringing we’ve been used to on previous albums, and when you hear these songs you’ll probably want to start learning them note for note.
Back when Comics were Quite Disturbing
I hardly know the history of Dick Tracy comics, but the 1942-43 story involving the crime villain Prune Face was truly bizarre and disturbing. Limited recollection in my mind involved Tracy wearing some kind of TV watch, but not in this story. He’s a low-tech street-smart crime detective working with the police and a few odd-ball friends in an attempt to stop a guy who is creating a toxic death-gas for use by wartime enemies of the United States. A strange underground communication spy system involving bar room juke boxes and modified umbrellas is discovered, and the story involves two or three humans and an unfortunate dog dead in the chase. When I was a kid, I gravitated toward the 1970s paperbacks of “B.C.” and “Wizard of Id,” comics for summer reading escapes, but these older comics, including the original Superman material, certainly portrays a different world, especially when it was at war.

The Last 100 Miles: The Fight for the Lower Deschutes

https://events.humanitix.com/the-last-100-miles-the-fight-for-the-lower-deschutes/tickets
ABOUT THE FILM
“The Last 100 Miles: The Fight for the Lower Deschutes River,” portrays the degradation of one of the world's finest trout and salmon sanctuaries. The Deschutes River is fed by rain and snow from the rugged mountains of central and eastern Oregon. Dams built 60 years ago wiped out prolific salmon and steelhead runs. Yet, the remaining 100 miles of free-flowing river became one of the region’s beloved whitewater adventure and fishing destinations.
“We love this river,” says local naturalist and fishing guide Amy Hazel, who has lived near the Deschutes for 30 years. “It means everything to us, so we’re going to do everything in our power to save it.” Hazel, alongside a trio of water and fisheries scientists, were puzzled by signs of trouble they observed in the river after Portland General Electric altered operations of the Pelton-Round Butte hydroelectric dam complex in 2010. Those changes have put the last 100 miles of the Deschutes River at risk.
Unlike many modern ecological problems, this one can be fixed.
“The Last 100 Miles” depicts individuals who love the Deschutes River and are raising their voices together.

About the play
“Y’all git ready to laugh, cry and be touched when Columbia Center for the Arts presents Steel Magnolias written by Robert Harling with special arrangement with Dramatist Play Services. The boss lady for this here show is Ashly Will. Ashly has been bossing people around on stage for a few years now and knows just what y’all wanna see. Steel Magnolias was originally produced by W.P.A. theater New York City, 1987 (Kyle Renick, Artistic Director). It became so popular it was made into a movie with a powerhouse cast of amazing actresses. The play is centered around “Truvy’s” beauty Salon in Chinquapin, Louisiana, where all the “Ladies” who are “anybody” come to have their hair done. Come on down and join this group of gossipy southern ladies in their hometown beauty parlor. The play is alternately hilarious and touching—and, in the end, deeply revealing of the strength and purposefulness which underlies the antic banter of its characters.”

The four-piece band’s songwriters and front persons, married couple Solange Igoa and Andrea Walker, have always channeled their personal struggles as well as experiences as queer, neurodiverse individuals into their songwriting.
Bassist Eric Stalker and drummer Blaine Heinonen bring a love of Americana, grunge, and dance music into the mix. All of these influences can be heard on the band’s latest singles, produced by Chris Funk of The Decemberists, and in their spirited live shows as they prepare for their full-length album debut in 2025.

Friday, July 26, Greenneck Daredevils / Mac Cornish & the Hens
Raucous country fun, $15 Advance // $20 Day Of Show, 6 p.m. Doors / 6:30 p.m. Show, All Ages
What do you get when you blend the genres of americana, folk, country, and rock from all over the US and infuse it into the Pacific Northwest? We consider ourselves defined by not one genre but a collective of thoughts and influences from all over. That’s the secret sauce here. The band is based in the Columbia River Gorge, a natural playground just east of Portland, Oregon. The whole band shares the common love for recreating in the outdoors and performing music, so there is no wonder we get such a natural, fluid, original sound.
Growing up in the shadow of the Santa Cruz mountains, Mac spent her days strolling through the redwoods and tracing her footsteps on the grounds of her grandfather's cattle ranch in the North Bay. Such a setting that would provide her with an undying appreciation and respect for all things old in age and of the earth. Mac discovered her love for music digging through her parents' record collection, emerging and adorning herself with not just the tunes, but the entire look and aesthetic of the music Mecca, Laurel Canyon. Drawing inspiration from Joan Baez, Gram Parsons, Jackson Browne and Buffalo Springfield, she began forging her own songs and style from her bouts with love, loss, tragedy and tranquility.
Saturday, July 27, Petunia & the Vipers, Haunting vintage Americana, $15 Advance // $15 Day Of Show, 6 p.m. Doors / 7 p.m. Show, All Ages
Louis Armstrong was once asked what his favorite kind of music was, and his response was simple; “Good music.” Petunia & the Vipers’ sound may not sit comfortably in one certain genre, but “Good Music” describes it well. One of the best bands in the world today, of any kind… hillbilly-flavored-swing inflected-ragtime-goodtime-thunderously rolling-one-of-a- kind-you-don’t-want- to-miss-this-sort-of-a-show… A new music that springboards off of music of the past and jumps into the present day, left with only echoes of the past… Something in between 1920’s and steampunk. It’s good for your mind… These are just a few of the words uttered by folks around the globe trying to pin down a description of all that is Petunia & The Vipers.
Sunday, July 28, Cousin Curtiss / Doug Stepina, Stompin Soulful Americana, $15 Advance // $17 Day Of Show, 6 p.m. Doors / 6:30 p.m. Show, All Ages
Cousin Curtiss brings to the stage a fiery dynamic rarely seen by a solo act and now partnered up with the equally enigmatic and soulfully driven electric guitar prowess of Harrison B, these two road warriors are on a mission to electrify audiences everywhere with their two-man full-band sound. Think, "blues at bluegrass speeds." Imagine, "rock americana with a soulful drip." Experience rapid fire acoustic guitar, incendiary harmonica, fiercely energized solos, all driven by a thunderous kick drum.
Hood River-based musician Doug Stepina (Antonyms, Greenneck Daredevils) began fronting indie rock bands on vocals and guitar in his early teenage years in the mid-90s.
