Jerseys to Rwanda: TDHS Girls Soccer impacts Local and Global Communities

FRom the Dalles High School Soccer Team:

By Colby Tonn

The Dalles High School Girls Soccer team is hosting a free Soccer Camp from August 1st - 3rd at the Wahtonka Fields, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. for K-8th graders who live in The Dalles.

For those who will be coaching youth soccer teams this fall, there will be a free full-season coaching curriculum for each age level handed out to help your young athletes have a fun and exciting soccer season.

In addition to reaching out to support local youth, the team is looking to help children around the world have a better soccer experience:

Every four years, TDHS sports programs purchase new uniforms for their athletes, in order to keep their athletes looking fresh and up-to-date on new trends and technology. While many items are worn out, mismatched, or missing through the years of use, teams are nonetheless left with a supply of jerseys, shorts, and accessories that are still in good condition.  The girl’s soccer team wanted to put them to good use.

Rather than keeping this equipment in a shed (some items are 12 years old) or dumped in a landfill, the team wanted to see if there was a program that could use these uniforms and equipment.  The team reached out to the Kefa Project to see about donating items to kids in need. The Kefa Project’s mission is to empower, and advocate for at-risk youth in Rwanda. The athletes then spent time last summer cleaning, counting, and sorting items to send to Kefa. They donated:

32 red jerseys

32 red shorts

25 black jerseys

49 white shorts

64 white jerseys

20 jackets

40 black shorts

59 pinnies

29 duffles

For more information about the Kefa Project or would like to donate, please CLICK HERE.  Camp participants will also have the opportunity to contribute to this or the The Sports Bra Project at the camp.  The Dalles High School Girls Soccer Program will be accepting new sports bras or cash donations, and all contributions will go directly to these two organizations.

If you would like to participate in the youth soccer camp, hosted by The Dalles Girls Soccer Team, please enroll by Tuesday May 10th, using the following google form:
