Bargeway Pub Leigh’s it on for Waterfront Wednesday

Jessie Leigh is bringing her Rock ‘N Roll attitude and country music to the Bargeway Pub in The Dalles tonight, May 22 at 6:30 p.m. for Waterfront Wednesday

Jessie Leigh of Clackamas, Oregon has been bending her vocals for years through church and gigs, and finally making the step from small-town teacher to big-time musician after college at Eastern Oregon. She infuses her rock and roll attitude into her country style and has been praised for her fresh, unique sound, and her small-town big-heart appeal.

Nashville recording artist Leigh has spent the past few years on tour sharing stages with fellow country artists such as Luke Combs, Tanya Tucker, Josh Turner, ALABAMA, Joe Nichols, and Craig Morgan.

The Columbia River: Wallula to the Sea at Maryhill Museum of Art

The Maryhill Museum of Art is presenting two lectures for its current exhibit "The Columbia River: Wallula to the Sea,” on Saturday, June 15. The talks take place from 2-4 p.m. in the M.J. Murdock Charitable Trust Educational Center, and the lectures are included with membership or general admission tickets.

About the event

Artist Erik Sandgren is one of the artists featured in the exhibition and he will present "Wallula to the Sea as Imagined, Observed and Remembered.” He will present works that illustrate necessary relationships between factual reportage and his more freely imagined depictions of the Columbia River. Where does truth lie? How does an artist arrive at the essential abstraction? In what ways does a pictorial ideal untether itself from pictorial fact? Should we paint what we know or what we see? What becomes of landscape without a single vantage point?

Historian Hobe Kytr has more than 40 years experience as a historian of the lower Columbia River. His presentation “Landscapes in Time: The Columbia River As It Was — Charting the River’s Past" focuses on the role of U.S. Coastal Survey engineer Cleveland Rockwell in documenting the Columbia River as it was before engineering improvements changed everything.

United Way benefit concert June 28

United Way of the Columbia Gorge presents a summer benefit concert and live auction on Friday, June 28, with Hell's Belles, the World Famous All-Female AC/DC Tribute Band, at Bargeway Pub in The Dalles. The Bingen Theater is bringing movies back! In between live theater, dance and music, we'll be bringing in occasional movies. We're kicking it off with the 40th anniversary re-release of what has been termed "The Greatest Concert Film of All Time. STOP MAKING SENSE: Newly restored in 4K to coincide with its 40th anniversary, the 1984 film was directed by renowned filmmaker Jonathan Demme and is considered by critics as the greatest concert film of all time. Stop Making Sense stars core band members David Byrne, Tina Weymouth, Chris Frantz, and Jerry Harrison along with Bernie Worrell, Alex Weir, Steve Scales, Lynn Mabry and Edna Holt. The live performance was shot over the course of three nights at Hollywood's Pantages Theater in December of 1983 and features Talking Heads' most memorable songs.

About the Artist

Pedro Gonzalez is a Columbian American comedian based out of NYC. Besides touring the country as a stand up, Pedro is a staff writer on Freevee’s hit show Primo, based on the life of NY Times best seller Shea Serrano. He was a finalist on Stand Up NBC and New York Funniest. He also has the honor of being the first Latin American immigrant comedian to appear on the Late Show with Stephen Colbert.

CGOA presents ‘Our American Home’ concerts

About the Concert

After a season that included music from England and Italy, the Gorge Sinfonietta returns to the United States for “Our American Home.” The concerts include some of the most beloved and iconic symphonic music from the golden age of American music.

From the 1920s through the 1950s, composers such as George Gershwin, Aaron Copland and Samuel Barber created the “American sound” in classical music. Melodic, bursting with emotion and energy, the music was as wide open as a prairie and as urban as New York City. Unlike some of the more avant garde music of the time, the American sound was easy to understand and direct in its expression.

Probably the most famous piece on the program is George Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue for piano and orchestra. One of the most recognizable, iconic American compositions of all time, Rhapsody in Blue is celebrating its 100th anniversary in 2024. It brings together the sound of symphonic music with the infectious syncopated rhythms of jazz. The Sinfonietta will be joined for Rhapsody in Blue by pianist/composer Mitchell Jett Spencer. Spencer thrilled audiences last season with his standing room-only performance of the Rachmaninov 2nd Piano Concerto.

Of course, American music continues to change and develop. Audiences will get to participate in that evolution firsthand, as the Sinfonietta presents the world premiere of Spirit of the Wind and Water, by Portland area composer Nicole Buetti. In addition to being a composer, Buetti is a virtuoso bassoonist and plays with the Sinfonietta. Spirit of the Wind and Water was inspired by watching kite boarders on the Columbia. It’s fast, exciting and evocative.

Our American Home includes several other, very recognizable compositions, including Aaron Copland’s noble Fanfare for the Common Man and Samuel Barber’s Adagio for Strings, a heartbreaking piece most famously featured in the film, Platoon. Rounding out the concert is another Copland composition, the Suite from The Tender Land. In addition to being an orchestral showpiece, the suite recalls other Copland compositions such as Appalachian Spring.

There is no question that Willy Tea Taylor’s life as a singer/songwriter was predetermined - his role realized the moment he wrote his first song. In it for the song, the hang, and the sounds he draws from his little, tenor guitar, Willy drew his inspiration from grainy videos he watched of true visionaries of his genre: Steve Earle, Rodney Crowell, Steve Young and Guy Clark, sitting around Clark’s little kitchen table loaded down with ash trays full of butts and half-smoked cigarettes, food, and booze on one Christmas Eve in 1975. Those guys, swapping songs without pretense, was what lit Willy Tea’s fire. Ever since, that’s been his passion - finding that hang and curating relationships through musical friendships that get him to his version of that night.

About the play

"Prepare for an uproarious evening of laughter and chaos with Neil Simon's timeless farce, 'Rumors.'
