Memorial Day Ceremony Honors Fallen Service Members at Sorosis Park

The Dalles, Ore., May 25, 2026 — Beneath fluttering American and POW/MIA flags overlooking the Columbia River, veterans, families, and community members gathered Monday at the Mid-Columbia Veterans Memorial in Sorosis Park to honor the nation's fallen service members during The Dalles' annual Memorial Day ceremony.

Hosted by the American Legion and supported by VFW Post 3471, the Patriot Guard, the Mid-Columbia Veterans Museum Committee, Boy Scouts, and Point Man International Ministries, the ceremony drew residents of all ages to pause and remember those who died while serving in the U.S. military.

Wreaths and flowers lined the base of the memorial as attendees stood for the presentation of colors and patriotic observances. The gathering brought together generations, from military veterans wearing service caps to young Scouts carrying American flags and children attending with their families.

The ceremony was held at the Mid-Columbia Veterans Memorial, a landmark overlooking the city that honors veterans from multiple generations of military service and serves as a focal point for local remembrance events.

Monday's ceremony reflected that purpose, blending solemn reflection with visible signs that the responsibility of remembrance is being passed to a new generation. Scouts stood alongside veterans during the service, while families filled rows of chairs facing the memorial.
