The Dalles, Ore., Jan. 31, 2024 - A pedestrian was killed when he was struck by a semi-truck pulling a double trailer on Interstate 84 near The Dalles on Tuesday, Jan. 30 at about 8:45 p.m.
The pedestrian was reportedly walking in the westbound lane near milepost 76 when the semi struck the male wearing dark clothing.
The male’s body came to rest near the speed sign in that section of the highway, and the man was later declared deceased at the scene, according to The Wasco County Sheriff’s log.
Oregon State Police Lt. Jason Calloway said the man was walking in the travel lane wearing dark clothing when the collision occurred.
The identity of the deceased who is from the Ohio area is not being released until the next of kin are notified.
The semi driver Bill Robins of Kennewick was unable to maneuver fast enough to keep from striking the black-jacket-wearing pedestrian, according to the Wasco County Sheriff’s log.
Robins called the accident into 911, and he remained on the scene and waited for authorities.
Calloway said footage from the Robins’ truck showed the pedestrian walking in the B lane of the highway before being struck. Why the man was there was not determined at the time of the incident.
Oregon State Police Trooper Jonathon Swiger handled the call with the help of Wasco County Deputies. Swiger called out for a crash reconstructionist as OSP took over the investigation.
