Portland Man Arrested after Allegedly Brandishing a Handgun on I-84 near Hood River

The Dalles, Ore., July 31, 2026 — An Oregon State Police trooper arrested a Portland man Thursday after he allegedly pointed a handgun at another vehicle while driving on Interstate 84 near Hood River.
According to an Oregon State Police report, the incident was reported at about 12:34 p.m. Thursday along eastbound Interstate 84 between mileposts 55 and 55.
A complainant told troopers the driver of a gray Mazda 6 held up a black handgun toward another vehicle in what was reported as a menacing incident. The alleged victim did not contact law enforcement and was not identified, according to the report.
The complainant provided investigators with a detailed description of the vehicle and a partial license plate number. Troopers later located a gray Mazda 6 matching the description and conducted a traffic stop.
The driver, identified as 67-year-old Steve Lester Wilson of Portland, consented to a search of the vehicle, according to Oregon State Police. Troopers said they located a black handgun matching the description provided by the complainant.
Wilson was arrested and lodged at NORCOR. He was charged with one count of unlawful use of a weapon.
The Mazda was towed from the scene by River's Edge Towing under community caretaking procedures.
The case remains under investigation. As with all criminal charges, Wilson is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
