Question of the Week: How do you beat the heat?

Welcome to Question of the Week, a weekly news column that poses timely questions about life, politics, culture, economics, health, and more to people out and about in our communities. Our hope at CCC News is that having this space dedicated to being curious about other people’s experiences can help us to deepen our understanding of people from all walks of life.

Weather forecasters are calling for a hot couple of days starting on Saturday, June 25. Temps are expected to come close or hit 100 degrees Fahrenheit on Sunday and Monday.

Time to put some Ice in your tube socks.

That brings us to this Week’s Question: What do you do to beat the heat?

Sam Woolsey, 72, The Dalles.

“The best thing to do is to get out early in the morning and get a walk in and rest of the day you feel like you did something and makes me feel better. An early morning walk is the way to go.”

Tegan, Schlee Pulido, 41, and Nicole Stocks, The Dalles

“Water fun. We play in the sprinklers, have water balloon fights and play dodgeball with water sponges.”

And what about you Tegan?

“I want to be cold,” she said.

Fidelis Wilson, 70, The Dalles.

“I stay inside and get the air conditioning going. I try to get stuff done early in the morning. I got most of my work done today, so there is not much to do tomorrow.”

We should all thank Fidelis for those crazy-cool Sycamores out front of his house. And those spiky sycamore pods are really fun to throw in the fall. Goggles required.

Brian Brackenbury, 46, The Dalles

“As a roof guy, I do not hesitate to dump a gallon of water on my head. When it hits 100, it’s the only way to regulate your temperature. Heat stroke relief is necessary. I try to find shade. And If you work too hard,  you regret it later.”

Brackenbury was working on a roof as we spoke. “The renters are showing up tomorrow, and I need to be gone by then.”

Brian said he was also keeping it cool with his band The New Prohibitions. He said they had a gig at Route 30 on Saturday for “Bryan Bash.”

Might be time to bash some ice into a vodka tonic and enjoy a show!

Kelsey Ivey, 34, The Dalles & her buddy Berg

“I get out on the water,” she said, noting she uses her paddle board to find some nice spots, such as at Columbia Hills Park. She also heads for high mountain lakes such as Timothy Lake.

“We like to cool off on a trail in the mountains,” she added, noting Berg appreciated the shelter of a shady pine. She said a favorite was Badger Creek Trail near Dufur.

Jeanette Prinzing, 61, The Dalles

Prinzing came riding in on her electric bike and was already wearing a swimming suit.

“I go out and water the lawn and shoot the water straight over my head. It’s very refreshing. I like riding my Rad e-bike and chasing younger men. That keeps you cool,” she said laughing.
