TD Girls Varsity Soccer Season Ends In Double Overtime Heartbreak
By Xavier Orion Olaez
The Dalles Riverhawks varsity girls soccer team played the Hood River Valley Eagles to a draw on Wednesday, April 7th during regulation play in an attempt to keep their playoff hopes alive.
It was the last game of the season for the Riverhawks.
It ended in defeat and heartbreak.
They played their hearts out and gave it everything they had, working so hard all season during a world pandemic and doing an amazing job representing this town and the high school.
The game was a long and hard-fought battle between both teams. It was a league playoff game, and the winner would move on.
It was the second meeting for The Dalles and Hood River. Their last game also ended with a 0-0 tie. This game was the exact same but the difference was it could not end in a tie since it was a playoff game.
The game was physical and fast. The Dalles is a very physical team but seemed to be a little slow-paced while HRV seemed to be less physical and faster-paced. So both teams had to adapt to each other's playing style. The Dalles has some great defenders and a great goalie in senior Kiersten White who stopped 8 of Hood Rivers shots. Hood River shot it 11 times and The Dalles 5 times.
It was a complete back and forth the entire game. When the second half ended, it was 0-0. It went into overtime with 10 minutes of extra play. When the first overtime ended it was still 0-0.
The game was extended to a second overtime.
At the 3 minute mark, Hood River took it down the field and from the right side kicked it into the left side of the net.
Riverhawks were unable to match the effort and the game ended.
While Hood River celebrated their win, the Riverhawks embraced each other with tears in their eyes. They then held hands and came out to the sideline with their parents and took a bow. They played so hard and did so well leaving everyone proud.
