Dallesport, Ore., April 17, 2024 – Skamania County Sheriff's Office dive team recovered a dumpster from Little Spearfish Lake near Dallesport on Sunday, April 14.

A group of recreational divers reported detecting a large unidentifiable object submerged in Little Spearfish Lake to authorities prompting a coordinated search and recovery operation by the Skamania County Sheriff's Office (SCSO) dive team, with support from investigators from the Klickitat County Sheriff’s Office (KCSO).

The teams gathered at the lake near Dallesport and remained on standby in case of a major incident.

After careful exploration the dive team discovered the object: a large steel dumpster, which was then removed from the lake.

“Nothing significant was found inside,” said Klickitat County Sheriff’s Office, “Our thanks go out to the SCSO Dive Team for the assistance in this investigation.”

KCSO acknowledged the unpredictable nature of their work by quoting Forest Gump.

"Just like a box of chocolates, you never know what you're going to get,” said KCSO.

While no serious injury or dangerous ecological hazard seems to have occurred, the discovery of the dumpster raises some questions— like how it ended up at the bottom of Little Spearfish Lake in the first place and why.

As always anyone with information about how or why the dumpster may have been disposed of in Little Spearfish Lake is encouraged to contact Klickitat County Sheriff’s Office.
