Second Car Fire Occurs on Pentland Street in The Dalles

This burned out Ford Escape still sits at the corner of Pentland and Third streets after it burned early Saturday morning. Neighbors said they were awoke to a loud explosion at around 3 a.m. on March 5.

A loud explosion and a car fire occurred on Saturday, March 5 at about 3 a.m., according to neighbors living on Fourth Street in The Dalles.

The shell of a burned-out Ford Escape was still parked at the corner of Third and Pentland Streets this morning, Monday, March 7.

Information from Mid-Columbia Fire and Rescue (MCFR) was not immediately available about the incident.

CCCNews must fill out a public record request and pay $10 to access information from MCFR to get the report on the fire. We hope to have more information soon.

This Just In

MCFR estimated the destroyed car was worth $18,000. It is owned by woman living in the neighborhood, according to their report.

The vehicle had an active fire in the cargo area at the rear of the vehicle, according to the report. Firefighters disconnected the battery after gaining access to the engine compartment, and the fire was extinguished quickly.

“The owner of the car states the car was parked and had not been driven recently,” the report says. “She also states nothing was in the back of the car where the fire started.”

Police officers on scene state they believed the back window of the car was broken out prior to the fire.,” the report continues.

“Upon investigation of the scene, we noticed that the back window of the car parked directly behind the car that burned was also broken out,” it states.

The cause of the fire was undetermined, the report states.

It is the second car fire in the last 20 days on Pentland Street. A car fire also occurred on Feb. 12 when a man using a Sterno to warm his hands accidentally dropped it inside a vehicle, and it caught on fire. Click here to see that story and video.

However, this car explosion and fire on March 5, does not immediately appear to be related to those seeking services or shelter at the nearby St. Vincent de Paul ministry.

CCCNews will update this story as information becomes available.
