Looks refreshing, huh? Click image to enlarge it.

The Dalles, Ore., July 5, 2024 — A pool, plunge bath and shower all sound pretty good right now!

The current temp - 96 degrees.

I soaked myself with a garden hose and am in the air-conditioned car with the temp set to “hell freezes over” as I write this.

Well, local legend has it that high school students in The Dalles once had access to a pool conveniently located at The Dalles High School.

The pool in the photo above was part of The Dalles High School built in 1915.

And our dear Mr. Foley has brought us proof of it.

Alas, nothing is forever.

The pool was essentially eliminated when the new high school was built over the top of it in 1940.

Many a student have gone looking for the abandoned pool. But where is it located in the current high school at 220 E. 10th Street?

Here are your choices:

  • In the basement of Kurtz Gym,

  • Buried behind the chili pot at the Chat & Chew,

  • or under the custodian’s utility room and used for storage.

Send your answer to tom@cccnews.com by Sunday, July 7 at 6:43 p.m. and all those providing correct answers will be entered into a raffle for a $25 gift certificate to Shannon’s Ice Cream.

And for bragging rights, why was the school rebuilt in 1940?

And triple clutch - what was the name of the Principal when the new high school was dedicated in 1941?

The winner will be announced on Monday, July 8.

Ice Cream tastes even better when you win it! Shannon’s Ice Cream 318 E. Fourth Street, scooping the dream daily from noon to 9 p.m. It’s across the street from the Civic Auditorium. Look for the boneshaker out front.
