Shannon's Trivia Winner: Nesta the Besta!

Shannon's Trivia Winner: Nesta the Besta!

Super on SIXTH - There was no fooling around this week as Super Puzzlers were all over this trivia question. It was like 12 ears of corn for $1. We had quite a raffle as 29 correct answers were received by Aug. 25 at 5:29 p.m. Thanks for the punctuality.

The Dalles, Ore., Aug. 26, 2024 — Puzzlers went Super this week as they remembered with great fondness the Super on Sixth in The Dalles and its proprietors

Super people running the store. Super candy cigarettes and 5 cent sodas, and Buy Golly, we ended up with another super question. Funny how things Super seems to be so curious.

“That is SUPER ON SIXTH. My mom was good friends with the Bales,” wrote Denise Ellis. “That was our grocery store of choice back then… hated to see it go.”

The Bales ran the store - however, no one came up with their first names - Mr. Bales was as close as we got. However, we did learn that they were Ron Bales’ parents, and we have our feelers out for getting the couple’s names.

NEW INFORMATION AUG. 27, 2024

John Foley located the first names of the Bales in the 1975 Polk Directory.

They are Melba and Carson Bales.

“‘That store was Super on Sixth owned/ran by the Bales,” said Rena George. “I used to ride the conveyor belt that was along the stairs to the basement.”

Wow, Rena! You were one of 29 people who wrote in with the correct answer. We put those names in the old sticker gun, and it ended up clicking out BARBARA NESTA.

Barbara Nesta is this weeks winner.

Congratulations Babara! You are this week’s winner in the Shannon’s Trivia contest! A $25 gift card to Shannon’s Ice Cream will soon be to you in the mail. We’d send the ice cream, but the envelope would get soggy.

Here’s to you Barbara Besta! Shannon’s Ice Cream awaits. Find Shannon and Jonathon and their team at 318 E. Fourth Street, The Dalles, scooping the dream daily from noon to 9 p.m. It’s across the street from the Civic Auditorium. Look for the boneshaker out front.

We also had some ringers on this question that asked three additional pieces for pure bragging rights.

We asked what other businesses have occupied the site since Super on SIXTH exited.

And then there were two who got it, loosely - not by exact names, but we know what you mean.

Bruce Harris and Michelle Harvey-Murphy got it correct - The Dalles Liquor Store, ReStore, and Henry Chan’s Studio Beauty Salon. The building location for all these businesses was or now is 1008 W. Sixth Street.

The Dalles Liquor Store came after Super on SIXTH.

The ReStore folllowed the Liquor Store as it moved next to Safeway.

Finally Henry Chan’s Studio Beauty Salon took the spot after ReStore moved to the former Copper’s Hardware location just down the street.

Thanks to all the puzzlers this week who checked out with a free piece mind candy:

Buy Golly we need an answer

Several people also pointed out that Buy Golly or By Golly grocery operated at the location as far back as the dam construction.
”By Golly's Grocery in the 1950's.  (Every Friday when my dad, who was an engineer building The Dalles Dam, got paid we would go to By Golly's to grocery shop,” said Diana Compton.

We were unable to confirm this - but it’s walking like a duck.

If you have a photo or can confirm it, let us know at tom@cccnews.com.

See you on Friday, Puzzle Punchers!

Breaking, by golly, News

“Yes I do,” said Dale Klindt about remembering the By Golley store. “I forgot that Frank "by golly" Combs had his first store there. Frank's son, Dudley, lives on Hostetler. I graduated from DHS with Frank Jr. Thanks for the reminder, Tom.”
