The Dalles, Ore., May 27, 2025 — The City of The Dalles has contracted Crestline Construction to complete construction of the Chenowith Elementary West 10th Street Bike & Pedestrian Facilities project. This project includes sidewalks on the east side of the street, closest to the river. Storm drainage, signage & pavement markings will also be installed.
The project limits run on 10th Street between Chenowith Loop Road and Snipes Street.
West 10th St. Traffic Control plan
This work is planned to take place on weekdays, Monday through Friday, from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Construction may impact local access to your home or business. Single lane closures with flaggers may take place, delays will be minimal as detour routes will guide traffic through or around the work zones as the project progresses. We encourage foot and bike traffic to stay on the west side (non-river side) of the street to avoid the work zone. Please use caution and be patient while passing through work zones, watch for all changes to traffic control and be attentive to the directions of construction workers that you may encounter.
Crestline will also be doing press releases informing the public of the changes in major detours or closures.
The Dalles City Council approved a $1.5 million contract with Crestline Construction for the West 10th Street Bike and Pedestrian Facilities Project.
The work will focus on infilling sidewalks between Snipes Street and Chenowith Loop Road. It will also create improved crosswalks at Emerson Drive and 10th Street and at Chenowith Loop Road and 10th Street.
Crews will also widen the shoulder along Chenowith Loop and install a temporary walkway with cones and sturdy posts to protect parents and students walking down the street to Chenowith Elementary.
ODOT granted $1.9 million toward the project that was originally estimated at $2.4 million. The City of The Dalles and District 21 also put up $200,000 each in matching grants. The overrun in funds could be put toward upgrades to West 7th Street in the near future. The street also lacks sidewalks.
