Eaylen Hammitt, 11, takes a shot during a Cornhole game on Monday, Sept. 14, on Robert Street in The Dalles. Pete Meyers, next to him, came from Eugene to escape the smoke. His daughter, Skarlette Meyers, supplied bags to her dad. Pete Meyers said smoke had shut down his work at Northwest Hardwoods, a lumber mill in Eugene.

Pete Meyers of Eugene came to The Dalles to try and escape the smoke and see his twin brother, Mark. He did alright on the brother. The smoke, no dice. But that did not deter the family reunion, which brought out a competitive game of Cornhole on Monday, Sept. 14. It was family versus family in the front yard on Roberts Street in The Dalles. Meyers said they also did a little trolling out front on the Klickitat River over the weekend, catching three salmon. Pete, who works at Northwest Hardwoods on Prairie Road In Eugene, said the mill shut down because of the poor air quality. “There was no work last week,” he said. So, they worked the corn bags on Monday.
