The Dalles, Ore., Sept. 3, 2024 — River Pulido and Jesiah Salazar were awaiting the bell this morning at The Dalles High School as it is the first official day of the 2024-25 school year.

Pulido, 14, said his first class was with teacher Mary Snodgrass for Freshman English. Pulido and Salazar, 15, were both receiving the basics at the high school today with the rest of their class of 2028 as the school holds an orientation day just for 9th graders and new students.

Today they will get the chance to navigate the hallways and better understand their schedule and where everything else is located in the building with out the additional pressure of upper classes.

On Wednesday, Sept. 4, the entire student body will have its first day together from 8 a.m. to 1:40 p.m., as the day will end with an early release.

Faith and Feronika Kainama made their way to Columbia Gorge Christian Academy this morning, Sept. 3. Faith, 5, wrote his name and his mother’s for us. His smile was uncontainable as he talked about going to school. Karen Wilson, Tia Anderson, and Rachel Bertrand are the instructors at the preschool, which operates at First Christian Church at 909 Court Street in The Dalles.

North Wasco County School District took the same approach at the middle and elementary schools today.

Kindergarteners at Elementaries and 6th grade at the Middle school are receiving an orientation today and the whole of all students will be back to class at D21 schools on Wednesday..

Local drivers are reminded to be cautious this week and throughout the schoolf year, especially in 20-mph school zones and at drop-off points out front of schools. Assume students biking, walking or rolling don’t realize you're behind them at the wheel of 5,000 pounds
