The new TJ Maxx is providing The Dalles with a major retail clothing chain, drawing shoppers from across the Gorge and adding another regional destination to the local economy. Charles Rankin of The Dalles said TJ Maxx brings needed retail variety, reduces trips elsewhere and makes shopping easier locally.

After months of construction and years of anticipation, TJ Maxx will open a store in The Dalles Aug. 16, transforming the former Staples building into a 24,477-square-foot retail destination and marking the latest expansion for the nation's largest off-price retailer.

Construction is underway at the former Staples building in The Dalles, where crews are preparing the space for a TJ Maxx store expected to open later this year.
