TD Booster Club letters at City Council Meeting; It's about pride, baby!
By Tom Peterson
The Dalles, Ore., March 12, 2024 — Anthony Pereira is on a mission.
The Head of The Dalles Booster Club went before The Dalles City Council on Monday, March 11.
He just wanted a couple of things.
A “T” and a “D”… on the hillside to the east of the water tower above Thompson Track in East The Dalles.
It’s near where the D letter used to be, and students at The Dalles High School would maintain it.
In the old days, the massive letter on the hillside could be seen far and wide and was filled with tires and lit on fire on Armistice Day before a big football game.
Pereira does not want to go that far. He said either chalking the letters with lime annually or using pavers and paint to create them would build a sense of pride for both the school and the entire community.
The land where the letters would lay is owned by the City of The Dalles.
“That would be a great thing for the community and booster club,” Mayor Rich Mays said emphatically.
“Great Idea,” added Councilor Scott Randall.
Councilor Dan Richardson confirmed that the T would be added.
Pereira said it could take up to six months to complete the project but he hoped to have it done by graduation, noting the associated student body at the high school was pumped about the idea.
Even better, Pereira said the Booster Club has been on fire as of late with multiple improvement projects around the school district.
For example, Booster Club members and volunteers just finished painting the buildings at Quinton Street Ballpark on March 9 and 10.
“What an outstanding group effort this weekend at historic Bob Williams Field at Quinton Street Ballpark,” reads a post on TDHS Athletics Facebook page.
“Huge thank yous and shout outs to Steve and Dawn Agidius, Bob Stocking, Darcey Hodges, Jimmy Shaver, Scott Booth, and a special thank you to Greg Cummings and his boys for their time, donation (of new siding) and great work on the home dugout!”
Special thanks to our friends at Sawyer's Ace for their hard work on mixing and providing paint, and to The Dalles Booster Club for financing this project and providing lifts and equipment along with D21 Facilities and Sodexo!
Pereira said both ACE and Peterson Cat had donated lifts to get work on athletic fields completed.
“You are all A1 rock stars and we appreciate everything you contribute to our student-athletes, our programs and facilities!” the Facebook post ends.
“People are stepping up,”Pereira told council.
East Cascade Electric has given of its time in fixing the Football Scoreboard as well as the lights at Quinton, he said.
